Disney takes positive steps with junk food

The Walt Disney Company has announced that from now on all products advertised on its children’s TV channels, radio stations and websites have to comply with strict nutritional guidelines. If the products do not comply with those guidelines, they cannot be advertised anymore on any of the Disney channels. Last week New York City banned the sale of large soft drinks and other sugary drinks and this is Disney’s effort to tackle childhood obesity in America. In short, quite a few of their current advertising products, including candy, sugared cereals and fast food will no longer be able to advertise on any of their channels. Their theme parks will also reduce the amount of salt by 25% in the children’s meals served at the parks, and there are also going to be fun public announcements promoting child exercise and healthy eating.

I don't believe that the advertising of junk food is the main problem in child obesity - parents are. I, also, think that all the hormones they pump into our fruit and vegetable to keep the shelf lives of the products longer also contribute to child obesity. We are living in a world of a no-win, no-win. As long as things are eaten in moderation, one can eat anything. It has even been discovered that fruit is more fattening than chocolates because of the natural sugar content - where to we start - again eating in moderation! The only real solution.

I have to agree with Daniela, I don't even want to imagen the money that is lost.
But at the end of the day this is a brilliant idea!
It is very sad that parents don't care what their children eats and most of the children would rather have something sweet that the healty food.
Well done Disney - Hope its a sucess.

Did you know now when people by X-box they no longer selling it with remotes, they now have the kinetic which follows your body movements and is also voice activated. It is also being done for the obese lazy kids, I think it is brilliant and bought one ourselves, it is so much fun but also so much of a work out too.

Great idea. I can't imagine that the affected companies are too happy and it is a lot of money being lost to Disney, but then Disney is an empire in every sense.

I agree that it should be incorporated into every continent. If they start with children they can change their "frame of mind" creating a snowball effect for the generations to follow.

It also comes down to th eparents who buy the junk food. thay also need to be educated on the importance of healthy food, especially for their young children still growing.

They can do that but if parents are not eating healthy and exercising it is a problem for kids, but I think it is a good positive step.

I think this might be the start of something big. All over the world people are realizing that they should at least cut down on the junk food and sugary treats. It's a great idea, start with the kids.

It is a plausable idea. Ultimately parents need to teach their children to eat healthily and a chocolate if you are going to have one is a now and then snack not a meal.

This is great news. They can take all the steps they want, but will the parents still allow their children excessive amounts sweets, and incorporate a healthy eating "plan", for the lack of a better word? Everything, at the end of the day, stays ones own choice and decision. But let's hope for the best.

I totally agree with what they want to do. Why only in America? I think that not only the children but also the parent's need to be thought how to eat healthy and to exercise.

A parent plays a very big role in child's life. If the parent exercises the child will to the same and the child will eat what the parent allows him/her to eat. I also think that discipline plays a very big role.

They going harsh hey, but maybe this will help them in some way. South Africa also has a huge percentage of kids that is obese in the ages on 1 - 9 years

It will be hard to incorporate this, but it is a very good idea
