The next diet fad

A new book, launched only in mid-January in Britain, has reached No 1 on their sales list and it is about dieting. The book is called “The Fast Diet” and it is known as the 5:2 diet. It involves five days of eating and drinking whatever you want with two days of fasting. The book says that the real secret to weight loss is that after a little bit of fasting your body turns off fat storing mechanisms and begins burning fat. Fasting for two days a week sounds like far too much hard work to me, but it does not mean that you cannot eat at all – you are allowed two meals of 250 to 300 calories each and that would mean that you could have two boiled eggs for breakfast and a plate of steamed fish and vegetables for dinner – but that’s it! It is written by Dr Mosley and Mimi Spencer and no doubt it is coming to South Africa soon as well.

I am not convinced this is healthy. I always thought you body goes into shock and stores food when you don't eat. Maybe one day a week on a fruit or water diet might help but I think two day with no food is a problem.

This definitely does not sound like a good diet at all… Firstly you can’t skip your meals on a weekend when everyone is having all the extra trimmings, and I don’t think you are going to survive a day at work when you skip your meals… You should eat every single day, like Sinead said 5 – 6 times a day to keep your metabolism going but just count the calories as you go…

I agree with Lucretia. Having 5- 6 small meals a day really helps with weight control. Everything in moderation. The odd day for junk food is acceptable but sometimes, your body even learns to reject the junk.

When you are fed up with the way you look and determined to change ,you will make it work one way or another. There is a book called "Power of will" it teaches readers how to train yourself to have a strong will. One should never give up and never surrender( at least not to being fat, drugged, hooked on alcohol or abusive partners)

All one really has to do is watch what you eat. If you eat small quantities regularly, you will lose weight. You really can eat anything, in moderation and that too works. Walk a lot and eat regularly and Bob's your uncle.

Starving oneself might bring on weight loss in the beginning, the body will store food quicker as soon as it realizes that starving mode is on this way, and then you will be twice the size as when you started

Fasting for a log period of time serves as a good detox, but I am not sure aboout this new craze. i have heard that eating healthy for a while and then suddenly shocking your body with a high sugar dose is a very effective way to loose weight. It will be interesting to see what new way they will come up with next time on how to loose weight, better your life or any other self-help overpriced concept to help people feel better about their life.

Thank you Michael, as soon as book in South Africa I will defiantly per chase this book, I start starve myself to lose some weight, does not look like it is working - but idea of having only two days a week to fast makes me quite happy, nice way to detox the body and still get vitamins in.

Accept who you are, but look after yourself by drinking water, eat healthy food, fruits and get a sport to keep you active, enven if you only do it on a weekend.

I wonder if this is actually good for the body. I know that your metabolism slows down if you fast so if you then return to your normal eating behaviour it actually makes you gain weight. I guess it has been worked out chemically

I think it is a fast way but do you actually lose weight??? There’s so many stories on how to lose weight fast etc. but I agree with Julie 100% you have to look after your blood. I personally think if you want to lose weight the correct way is to go to the doctor and let him work out a diet plan according to your blood. I heard about this and I have actually see results with my own eyes. It's pricy but worth it....

I bought a book recently that deals with our eating habits and what types of bad foods and lifestyle choices effects certain area's in our bodies and how our bodies gain and loose weight, the most important way is to change your eating paterns and portions not starve yourself. adding exercise can also quicken the process. I would not fast rather change important eating patterns

I think I'd try the fasting thing maybe once a week but then you wonder doesn't your body hold onto that fat? If you want to have a good body then I suggest you start deciding on your eating plan before winter comes by!

Many people fast. It's been around for 6000 years. In religion there are a few fasts that range from 3 days to 40 days. Some fast one day a week - all for various reasons. Some only drink water during the fast, some eat only vegetables and fruit (and water).... Jentzen Franklin is big on fasting - from a religious point of view.

I still believe that if you look after your blood you will not only be the size you should be but also healthy. The main things any person who wants to be healthy should do and maintain a good figure is to eat fruit early in the morning - if you mix fruit with anything it rots - lots of water - separate your proteins and starches and get some form of exercise. Eat as much meat as you want - but with vegetables and salad. That is the basics to a healthy lifestyle.

Follow this programme in general - on the odd days when you feel like pizza, kfc, or whatever else - do it. But get back onto this programme asap afterwards.

All these diet plans, just eat healthy, drink a lot of water and excercise - everyone is always looking for the easy way out. And if you cannot be as skinny as those unhealthy models, honestly who cares, be happy with who you are
