Calvin Harris v Tiesto

Having had the opportunity of seeing the No 1 and No 2 DJ’s in the world, playing 48 hours apart, it is quite noticeable that the type of music that is now popular is once again the Trance-style but generally with singing.  Trance songs of a decade or so ago did not typically have vocals, whereas now they do, and even Tiesto has changed to that style.  I think there is quite a lot of pressure on any DJ who is paid $200 000 for a 2 hour show to perform and make the mixing of one record into another seem like it is a whole lot more complicated than it is (beat counting and mixing in not terribly hard – music taste in another subject) and as a result Tiesto, for example, probably does a lot more posing around and gesticulation than he might have done some years ago.

Calvin Harris plays up a lot less but he is playing largely songs that he has produced and created in collaboration with some of the top female pop artists in the world, like Rihanna, and is perhaps a lot less showy.  In a telling sign he is the DJ that Hakassan has chosen for the New Year’s Eve party and I have to say it is quite removed from the music I used to like, but I probably prefer the music he plays to that of Tiesto.  There is no doubt that both of them however are huge stars and it was only when we left Las Vegas that we saw billboards of a much smaller size for other very famous DJ’s such as Armin van Buuren.  For now Calvin Harris and Tiesto rule the world when it comes to Dj’ing – and Las vegas too.

Think I should learn how to DJ. Seems like a ridiculous amount for anyone to earn. But then again musicians are some of the highest earning people in the world. What a profitable carreer.

I read that Calvin Harris has earned £30million in the past 12 months, making him the highest earning DJ on the planet. Tiesto was named second in the annual Forbes list and pocketed £20million in the same period. That's a lot of money for beat counting and mixing.

I must say I like both Calvin Harris and Tiesto, although you hear more Calvin Harris songs played on radio. I think you have to be a fan to listen to these types of DJ's especially Tiesto, as some of his music is very "trancey" like Kaylee said.

Oh my word this is the kind of music my best friend and I would dance to all night long!!!!! We have yet to find a club that plays this kind of house/dance music though. We're tired of the commercial music that 'the crowd' wants to hear, even though I do enjoy it. 'Truth' would play trance but I have heard too many bad stories about it - I'm scared to go there lol... I'm tired of going out and clubbing though... Maybe if H20 brought them down as Kaylee said, I'd go.

Must say Im a bit of a trace-music junkie...Both Dj's are awesome! Would love to see them in action, maybe H20 will bring them here, for a little trancey vibe...

I must say I am not into trance music. I always think of the club truth when I think of that genre of music and I dont like that club at all. However, I enjoy Calvin Harris music - perhaps because there are actual words to his song and not just a beat. I think as a DJ you have to evolve and also try new things to keep up and stay relevant. You cant stick to the same thing for years and years without a bit of change.

Admittedly I am not the biggest "dance music" fan. But I have at least heard of Calvin Harris. And one or two of his songs are catchy enough for me to enjoy his music in general. :)

I must agree with Iola and Bianca - I don't listen to DJ's etc and am not a huge fan of the music that comes out these days. More of an old school and rock/alternative/metal type of girl, But it must be very good in all aspects to be at that level and wanted such as that and be able to play inthe top club in the world at the moment - until a new guy/girl comes in as these DJ's seem to be poppong up everywhere

I don't really listen to DJ's there is probably one or two songs of Calvin Harris that I actually like. I have not heard of Tiesto but I do like the fact that they have started to use words in their music
