Obama changes on marijuana

As everyone knows a number of States in America allow the use of marijuana, one for no reason at all – that is Colorado – and the rest on the flimsiest of medical excuses – such as you have a pretty bad cough and your doctor thinks it will clear it up!  President Obama has always been against marijuana noting that the federal government rejects the legalisation of marijuana.

That situation now appears to be changing, given that in a recent interview published in New Yorker magazine, the President was quoted as saying he would not “encourage” smoking dagga as he believed it is “a bad idea, a waste of time, not very healthy”.  He did admit to smoking dagga when he was young and said that he thought it was not as dangerous as alcohol in terms of the damage it can do to an individual.  He also pointed out during the interview that whenever people get arrested and sent to jail for marijuana it is always children from poor families and that children who smoke marijuana, but come from wealthy families, never go to jail – so the treatment by the government in that regard is incredibly unfair.  When it came to the issue of how grass is being treated in Colorado and Washington, he said in the interview the experiments should go forward “… because it is important for society not to have a situation in which a large portion of people have at one time or another broken the law and only a select few get punished.”

That all hints at a big change coming in America, although often they take another 10 years once they have reached this phase of Presidents thinking that things are not so bad but of course it is a difficult topic, because on the one hand there are many who do not believe that it is as dangerous as alcohol, and you have even now the President of America supporting this point of view and he is probably correct in doing so, and on the other hand there is no denying that dagga is not good for your health, and it certainly, apart from leaving you paranoid, is pretty demotivating.  Those that appear to smoke it all the time invariably have a view that is against much of organised society, not particularly interested in hard work and trying to live the easy life.  I think you would be hard pressed to find a successful person, and I am not talking about people who make their money singing songs or acting in movies, who smoke dagga on a regular basis.

I agree with Caron. As humans we always blame stuff...not ourselves. It has pro's and con's and this has been in debate for a very very long time. Some medical conditions can benifit greatly from it and give that person just enough to deal with the pain or condition to live a little bit more normal life. Another healthy person could abuse it and be zoned out the whole time. And others use it as a chill out every now and then. It is about addictive personalities and each individuals perspective. Alcohol causes so much more inter marital or partner abuse, violent crimes, violence, accidents the list goes on and on. Ban alcohol, then we're taking a step in the right direction and do more studies on Mary-Jo and then give the option to the people. Alcohol is legal to use, I have never liked it and don't use it. So does many others... the fact that something is legal doesn't automatically make it a problem. It's what we do with it. The smoking and alcohol industry would be non existant / down the drain long long ago if they depended on people like my family members .... Not saying that birthdays and New years are boring :D we just celebrate and have braais without it :)

Not saying yes or no. But it's illegal and so much more should alcohol be.

'The immediate effects of taking marijuana include rapid heart beat, disorientation, lack of physical coordination, often followed by depression or sleepiness. Some users suffer panic attacks or anxiety.' - Cant see how any of these can be good for anyone...

Sometimes allowing people to do something you don't really want them to do makes them not want to do it anymore. It sounds dumb but it's true - Reverse Psychology. I still don't think it should be legalized though.

I must say, I agree with Elektra to an extent - some people don't have addictive personalities and therefore won't get addicted to substances.

It is ridiculous for making it legal but then again if it's legal or not people do drugs all the time. Those that are supposed to do something about it just look the other way. And the other thing, doesn't wealthy people always get what they want? If they are doing the wrong thing or not they have money so they can't do anything bad in society's eyes. Poor people always have to pull on the short end, getting even less than they deserve. Marijuana to me is not that bad if you smoke it every blue moon, but the use of it everyday and the use of other drugs everyday that is just sickening I can't understand why people would want to do things like that and feel the way they do.

As far as the punishment for marijuana smoking is concerned-it does not make sense to me why the American government would chose to deal with the issue by considering legalising marijuana, as opposed to just correcting the punishment procedure and ensuring that arrests are made across the board and not only to children of poor families.

Marijuana sounds dangerous I think allowing the use of it it's a bad idea

Marijuana is very dangerous and addictive substance. When they are smoking they don't think straight and they end up doing stupid things such as stealing or killing. In the end they will end up in jail with no life.

Weed doesn't make one look very clever. I'm sure it kills the brain cells and am really confused as to how it could ever be legalised. I've seen how slow people have become from regular use of it.

The more rules you put in place and the more you make something illegal the more people want to do it, I find it very stupid that those states that have made marijuana legal saying that it is for medical conditions and then just giving it to people based on "oh I have a headache" the government shouldn't even bother with the Doctors seeing as any one could get marijuana

Bianca  said:

I agree 100% with Alexis, when weed is not doing the trick anymore people will try something stronger. And that is the main reason why some people is living on the streets with no money for food.

Marijuana is not necessarily good for you. I have, however, read various medical articles where it has been used against tumors with wondrous results, but there are pros and cons to every substance out there used for medical purposes.
According to the interwebs, sales in the first week of dope being legalised in Colorado saw profits of approximately R1 billion. (Yes, with a "B"). If you are able to regulate and tax the industry it might help to eradicate the violence related to its trade and be an extra source of revenue to the government.
This is if you "pros" list outweigh your "cons" list of course.

Marijuana makes you slow, stupid and lazy. There is no argument about it. In India all the hippies were walking around dazed and confused, going nowhere, just wandering. With so many more important issues in the world like rape, child abuse and human trafficking, should we really be spending time discussing how some lazy people want their drug to be legalized so they can show off how cool they are in public?

Angelique  said:

I have nothing against people smoking marijuana, however, I don't think it should be legalized because people will then smoke it all day everyday. The world will become so laid back and lazy. There will have to be more road blocks to see who is driving high etc. I say no, no, no! Hopefully South Africa will be extremely slow (like with everything else) and not follow this trend.

Refilwe  said:

honestly i have nothing against marijuana. its not that it controls you its how a person handles the effects so i agree with Caron. and people should know not to let the weed control them, for they should control the weed.

Lucretia  said:

I have to agree with Caron on this topic, people are the problem, not the substance. There are so many conflicting, yet good, arguments around weed - I am keen to see how long it takes for South Africa to climb on the legalization board.

Other day I was watching on Discovery programme about Jamaica's drug dealers and drugs on the streets. In Jamaica's streets marijuana and dagga are currency in the way, you can easy exchange marijuana for a gun. It is terrifying to see that some kids start using marijuana from very small age. I always believe that drugs only harm person's personality and does make you very stupid.

Caron  said:

Elektra  said:

I am quite against the use of any drug, no matter how small or less harmful it my be. Your body becomes immune to it, and eventually before you know it you are taking 2 - 3 times the amount in order to get the same effect, which then leads to the use of something stronger and so the downward spiral continues. No further elaboration is needed.

Zelda   said:

Public places like malls and restaurants don't even have smoking areas anymore, because it is harmful to people not smoking.
Now it's okay to smoke weed everyday if you like...
Cigarettes might be harmful to your health, but it doesn't shrink your brain or change your personality and marijuana.
Also, what would happen if people are high when they are driving or doing something important?
This is ridiculous.

Weed makes you stupid, I cannot imagine how people actually become successful while being under the influence. Studies show that weed affects your psych permanently, and the damage that is done is irreparable. A large portion of people admitted into mental institution are weed smokers. I think its a form of escapism. Perhaps, there are health benefits, it's not for me though.

I wonder what the affect of this new take on marijuana will have on South Africa. Especially with regards to the legal profession, as we saw in Prince v Law Society it is frowned upon even if it used for religious purposes.

Simone  said:

I agree completely with David. I've seen it take over a few people's lives when they smoke it every single day. They become lazy and out of it. Smoking it occasionally is not the biggest deal in my opinion.

Brumilde  said:

They call it a drug for a reason. It is addictive and causes damage but most medicine when over-used causes damage to your body even something as simple as grandpa headache tablets.

i saw that uruguay legalised marijuana recently. i think in the near future most countries will legalise or at the very least decriminalise. i agree that smoking everyday is not good, but i don't see anything wrong with an occasional joint.
