Registering to vote

I am already registered to vote from previous voting registrations, but had to re-register as I now stay in a different area.  I took part in one of the IEC registration weekends and I found that the queues were very short, the process was very quick and I was happy that I took 5 minutes out of my day to take part.

People still have until the President officially proclaims the election day, which we know now to be 7 May 2014, to register to vote and they can do so at any of the Municipal offices of the IEC.  It is well worth it, because we get very little opportunity to say anything, other than to express your choice once every 5 years and even if it means queuing for 30 minutes or an hour on a day that you have off from work in any event, one should take part.  You cannot complain if you don’t take part in the electoral process and your vote is crucial.  I would like to hear other people’s experiences of registering or even their thoughts on taking part and voting in the elections.

I have also registered previously and I believe that it's important that you vote, to have a say. So many people complaining about our country but come voting time most don't even vote. I don't care what queue you have to stand in to get a vote, at least you know your vote counts.

I also am registered from the previous elections. I was shocked to hear that so many of my friends have only registered this year, but they will always have something to say when something is not going their way. When I registered I also found the process to be very quick and I wont mind standing in a queue for half a day because to vote is very important and every one counts.

My pet peeve, people that don't register to vote. I have so many friends that are educated and continuously complaining about service delivery of the municipality that still don't vote! The year I turned 18, I registered to vote and have voted every year since. If you don't vote then don't complain, what's the point of a democracy?!?

Nothing irritates me more when people complain about our party, but does not put a little effort in to vote. Be the change you want to see in other. I'm registered and ready to vote.

We recently moved so I had to register at a different polling station. I have to say that the service was very efficient and registering took 10 minutes.

Having also recently moved, I had to register at a polling station close to my new home. Service was quick, friendly and efficient.

May the winds of change blow at the upcoming elections.

It is important to register so that one has a say in how the government run.

Everybody should register and vote and people that do not vote should think twice about complaining about the state of the country as they have not even taken the most minimal effort in changing the sate of affairs in South Africa.

I have been in the process of relocating to JHB, so as soon as I've settled in and my address becomes permanent, will I go and register, Do not want to be registered in PTA and have to travel there just to vote. I'm sure if i arrive early to register there shouldn't be to much of problem.

I have always used my right to vote and will always vote be it a general election or a municipal election. Whenever I hear people saying why bother, its rigged anyway I always say, your one vote could tip the scales or continue to keep the opposition in, preventing a one party state. I vote, because I can and because I care.

I am registered to vote and am very excited to do so!!! I hope South Africans have not become so despondent that they don't vote. That would be a shame. The queues in Fourways are always long so I plan on getting there very early. VOTE SOUTH AFRICA VOTE!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have also been registered since i was old enough to do so, and have never missed a vote either. I took the time on the weekend of 8 February this year to double check that i was still registered, just in case because you never know, and it didn't even take a minute. I walked in, they checked my name, marked it off and i walked out. On voting day, i will be there, even if i have to stand in the que for hours on end, my vote will be made.

I had to re-register because I moved as well. My experience was also very positive, perhaps 10 minutes of my time. Everyone has to vote, its important. I wonder what the stats will come out as if we could count everyone that didn't vote because they said it would not make a difference. Don't give up we are gaining more ground than what we think.

Registered to vote and praying for a change in this country. We all need it. I know what David means about if it is even worth the effort.... But when I went to register and had seen how many people plan on voting for the party I am voting for made me think that this year might just be different. And at least at the end of the day we tried to make the difference.

I have to agree with Alexis, if you don't vote, you have no right to complain. People fought and in some cases died for this privilege. It doesn't take that long and its a public holiday. No excuses.

As soon as i heard that if you do not vote, your vote automatically goes to the leading party, i then made sure that the next time elections take part i am going to register to vote, and i did. The process was extremely quick and efficient and in my area there are like 4 registration/voting stations so there was no need for me to wake up early and go stand in long ques. i honestly cannot wait to vote since it will be my first time voting. And i agree with everyone saying that you do not have the right to complain if you do not vote, i mean, whats the point of arguing if you wont vote for what you want to see change in ?

I am quite ashamed to say that I only registered for the first time this year. I registered the first time round and it was quick and easy. My ID was stolen so I went the second time round just to make sure I was registered and if I didn't need a sticker. Again it took 5 minutes! If you don't vote, your vote automatically goes to the leading party. A party may win by only a handful of votes - gotta make yours count! If you couldn't care to vote, you lose your right to complain!

I am also lucky to still stay in the same area to there was no need to do it again. I have, like Alexis, also registered as soon as I was old enough. The lines are really not that bad. I just feel that you have the right to vote so do it!!

Sorea  said:

Yup, registered to vote. You cannot complain about the government if you don't even take an hour on a public holiday to try and change it.

Cindy  said:

I went to register and the process was very quick BUT the forms was in another language. No English or Afrikaans. The lady that scanned my ID, filled in the forms as well... How fair is that to the English or Afrikaans speaking people. I know it is just forms but still.

I registered as soon as i was allowed, Have voted every time and will continue to do so every time. I do believe that you cannot complain unless you vote. You really have no right to and by not registering have forfeited that right. Even if you are one of those who have and decide not to vote because you are unhappy but to not want to vote for another party - You KNOW you vote still goes to the party that you do not want to go vote for in the first place. I have found registering very easy, the first time i went took me 5 min and i re-registered as i had moved as well to be just as easy and took me 5 min - I think the long lines etc will come on the actually day of voting
