The deadliest animal in the world

I enjoyed a recent blog by Bill Gates on his blog at www.gatesnotes.com where he was describing the world’s deadliest animals.  The deadliest animal in the world was no surprise to me, because I am well aware of the dangers of malaria and the mosquito kills some 725,000 across the world every year.   Apart from humans the most dangerous animal is the snake which kills about 50,000 people a year around the world, including about 11,000 a year in India and the biggest number of deaths in South Africa from snake bites come from the bites of puff adders.  I have to say that I generally find them fairly scary creatures and I am not a big fan of snakes!  Dogs, via rabies also kill far more than crocodiles, hippopotamus or elephants with lions only killing approximately 100 people a year and less than 10 people die a year around the world from shark bites but every time there is a shark attack that of course turns into an international sensation.  In fact, 2,000 people a year die from tapeworm, so it is almost like the more you talk about an animal, the less dangerous it really is.  Mosquitoes also cause a loss of productivity, and apart from malaria, other diseases that they carry include dengu fever, encephalitis as well as yellow fever.

Its fascinating to think that a mosquito which is so small and can kill so many humans a year. Especially since humans are such destructive, dangerous animals.

I grew up on a farm, chopping heads off snakes. So I guess I am not so scared of snakes. My uncles were also game rangers and I once stood on a snake barefoot, accidentally. Humans are incredibly destructive!

I hate snakes. I have been in front of a ringkells before, although it is not a deadly snake, it was absolutely poison's and terrifying. I also hate the sound mosquitoes make especially when you are sleeping and you do not know where it is. You can hear them a mile away.

I hate any thing that crawl or slithers..... gives me goosebumps.... scary that humans are part of the most deadliest but does surprise me one bit, with all the crime rates and all. My biggest fear is a frog and that is not even part of the deadliest animals....

I agree that dogs(through rabies) are one of the deadliest animals.

I was bitten by a dog ,and being the self-diagnoser and partial hyperchondriac that I am I was worried about dying of rabies for 1 WHOLE year because that's how long it could take for the symptoms of rabies to start showing. Once the symptoms start there is nothing that can be done about it and a person dies. At least with a shark, lion etc the option of operating could still exist to save ones life.

I take a trip to Mozambique at least twice a year, and that area is prone to Malaria, So far I seem to be okay. But am weary when the next morning I see a mosquito bite.

We were on holiday in Malawi and we had to take medicine to prevent Malaria, but the meds made me crazy, it made me feel really bad and I didnt enjoy the holiday so I stopped drinking them, reading this actually scares me, guess I was lucky!

I am scared of what all a mosquito can transfer from one human to another. They not only the deadliest but the scariest as they are so tiny and cannot see them clearly.

I don't like mosquitoes because of the irritating sound they make the itching you have after they bite you. Snakes I am terrified of

In East Africa malaria is more like common cold. Every other day people suffer from malaria and it is becoming resistant to most medication. I hate mosquitoes more because of the irritating sound they make.

Coming from Ukraine to leave in South Africa I am actually terrified to see spiders, snakes and giant mosquitos. In Ukraine we do not have so many animals just like that walking around in the house or waiting for you in the back yard. Few times my cat court one of those bush snakes in the back yard. My husband said that this kind of snakes quit dangerous. Very proud of my cats - they are great hunters/ they are actually doing their job to chase away snakes, lizards and rats.

My weakness is snakes and spiders cannot stand them. The mosquito can also take home the prize for being the most irritating thing ever

its difficulty to believe such a small creature can cause such dangerous illnesses. I would have thought the bigger animals would cause the most damage

I must say Spiders are my weakpoint, one bite can make your flash rot and fall off. Though most are not dangerous because their mouths are so small they cant bite through the skin

Humans are actually very cruel. Kill any insect/ thing that we come across without thinking that they also have a place in the life cycle.

I love nature and respect it. You can never underestimate any animal or mother nature as a whole. Hippos are one of my favorite animals.....but they are very scary and very dangerous, we would often go to Pongola for Tiger Fishing and that damn is scary in itself, crocodiles, hippos - not to mention that the waves that occur there could capsize your boat. Mosquito's are just annoying in my books, when you are trying to sleep and all you hear is that buzzing, and you can never find the thing to kill it

Caron  said:

The worlds deadliest animal is in fact the human being!

Nikita  said:

The hippo is such an unsuspecting animal. From afar they look so soft and cute when in actual fact they kill CROCODILES! They are extremely aggressive and territorial, and will attack anything that ventures into their stretch of river.

I dislike mosquitoes just because of the fact that they have bitten someone else before and snakes are just scary.
