DHL dealing with incompetence

I must say, as frustrating as I find my own drivers at times, I cannot imagine what goes on inside DHL.  There is not a time when they don’t let us down with documents or papers.  They will forever claim that a driver is on the way to us.  At 1pm on 26 November, for example, the driver was going to be with us shortly, a little bit later he will be with us between 2 to 4pm.  At 3.30pm he was on the way to us and very close to us and after 4pm of course they announced that he will only be able to come the next day and sadly they don’t go directly to where my house is situated.  Of course, they never said that when they took the address from us, and I had similar problems when I have imported goods and DHL has been in charge.

As a result, I try to use FedEx more often, because they are far superior, the only problem being that their branch is in Midrand which is not as convenient to me as the Bryanston branch of DHL.  I used DHL recently to send an urgent document overseas to America and I tracked it online, and the route it took was unbelievable, but to cut a long story short, a document that is given to their branch on Thursday afternoon, before 3pm arrived at its destination on Tuesday.  In other words, it took an international courier company 5 days to deliver from a major city in South Africa to a major city in America and I really don’t think that that beats the post by very much at all – at least the post in other countries, not South Africa!  On the other hand, as a courier company you should not be comparing your delivery times to snail mail.

I must say DHL is pretty useless at times. FedEx is not much better though.

Working with DHL in my personal experience has been a complete nightmare. You are put on hold for far too long than necessary, lines get dropped in your ear, no real reasons as to the delays are given. It seems like they have a fantastic online system (technology) and call centre yet the actual delivering or collections is in shambles. Their excuse to me when I have to end up sending our own driver is "Oh sorry it said it was out for delivery but actually its still here, I can find out what went wrong and deliver it tomorrow". I have learnt to call the call centre atleast 3 times to get an update to see how many times they change the story and what the story actually is from different people.

This is so sad, I hear them advertising on the radio quite often. And to hear of the poor service you have received, should I ever need to post something, I might just consider another company. Seems like everything around this country is slowly falling apart.

It sounds like DHL really need to improve their service. There are competitors that are very willing to steal their customers. It does seem like good customer service is hard to come by at the moment.

I wonder what happened because I clearly remember them being very good last year

Maybe the inconvenience of travelling to the Midrand branch of FEDEX with its quality service is better than the convenience of travelling to the Bryanston DHL branch with its constant ineptitude.

DHL has delays but not always, they delivered a package within 4 days from Siberia to Joburg, i thought it was quick!
bu the regular post service is a nightmare and now they are on strike for months, i can only imagine how it is hurting magazine industry especially during festive season.

What would life in South Africa be like without the lack of service? What would we talk about? Adventure is out there, step out side and seek out service in South Africa!

I have to say I have used DHL on numerous occasions, however, only local i.e. within the boundaries of South Africa and I have never had a problem with them. But let me not speak to soon.

There is nothing worse than experiencing delays due to bad service and bad planning on a service providers side. There is no care for customer service in most companies in South Africa, you experience shocking service day in and day out dealing with most companies or service providers and it just seems that service is no longer a requirement but a bonus.
