The dangers of indoor tanning

I have read more reports about indoor tanning recently and it is one of those things where the tide has yet to turn and unfortunately it remains too popular.  It seems, notwithstanding a lot of coverage about the dangers of indoor tanning, that this is still incredibly popular, especially with younger women.  It seems sadly, as with smoking, that although the word is out as to how dangerous it is, a lot of people simply ignore it in the name of vanity and looking good, and subject themselves to dangerous rays.

In some States in America you now need parental consent before you can use the machines, if you are under 18, and some have adopted an outright ban on minors using them.  Apparently, the incident rate of melanomas in women under the age of 40 has risen by more than a third since the 1990’s, but tanning salons are still extremely popular.  It is funny how perceptions change, and it seems strange to read that many years ago being tanned was not considered socially desirable – and was similar to having calluses on your hands – sending out a message that you were a low status worker who worked outdoors in the sun.

Now, a suntan is considered glamorous and despite the fact that lots of sun will make you look 40 at the age of 30, a lot of people cannot stop.  The World Health Organisation found, as far back as 2009, that using sun beds before the age of 30, was associated with a 75% increase in the risk of a melanoma and another study, in 2012, found that every four sessions that you have on a tanning bed before the age of 35, increase your risk of certain skin cancers by 15% - each time!

An interesting study by the CDC, which is the Centre for Disease Control, also found that young women who use sun beds, because it is largely younger women who use them, generally also indulge in illegal drug use and are far more promiscuous than women who don’t use the sun beds.  That would indicate, to a certain extent, that they are aware of the risks of these beds, but have taken a gambling approach of live for today and to hell with the consequences.  There will always be those who say that people should be free to do as they want, but the other side thereof is that, even if they are not harming others, they will cost others extra taxes in the form of the hospital treatments and therapy they need at a later stage to try and save their lives.

I don't think Sun beds are good for you. Its unnatural. I understand people don't always have time to have a swim and lie in the sun but rather be safe than sorry.

I have never tanned in a sunbed and I have no intentions of doing so.

Rather use self tan lotion when wearing more open clothing, otherwise just accept your non tanning skin. I think the sunbed make your skin look older.

I have never been one for any form of tanning at all, I was on Roccutane for a number of years and whilst on the medication you cannot be exposed to any sunlight at all, because of this I still tend to avoid the sun at all costs and I would rather be as white as anything that spend any amount of time in the sun. As for indoor tanning, I have never tried it and do not think I ever will.

Well isn't everything dangerous these days anyways? I mean smoking, drinking, tanning, driving etc you at risk all day everyday, people that also don't do that stuff also land up with sicknesses regardless.

I don't sunbed due to the fact that I cannot tan in anyway, people with fair skin like mine should not use it at all. no point anyway. Get some vitamin D from the sun once in a while but always use sunscreen

my daughters asked me what was that cabin in the middle of the change room at gym. i said it is a place where you go to get a little bit fried and crispy like bacon. they are horrified about that machine since then , they think it is some torture chamber.hope it stays that way and they feel fear to use them when they are grown up.pale legs is ok to have .

I would also like to add to my previous comment, that I don't even smoke never tried and I am really not interested and never in my life have I used any drugs or ever tried and for the rest of the disbelieves I wont even comment on as I really do not believe in such silly behaviour. Tanning can not be related to, if and when someone will be using drugs or misbehave. Tanning is for looking good and to feel more comfortable with yourself and is the same as when you use makeup to make yourself look pretty.

I have never used a sun bed before, Im way too claustrophobic, but I like to be tanned so I would rather lay in the sun.
I know a lot of people who do use the tanning salon next to the gym and it is a "gold mine". All the gym freaks like to be tanned because your muscles display better when tanned.

I personally am not one for tanning. Of course it is nice to have a tanned complex, but whether you sit for a 30 minute session on the sun bed or 30 minute session outside, it is very dangerous.

I cannot even sit in the sun at all, the heat drives me insane lately and lately I cant even spend 10 minutes in the sun without feeling irritated.

I have never been on a sun bed and I never will have the urge to try it. I have however found a body lotion that has some form of self tanning in it, and that is how I will get my "glow" if necessary. But the sun and sun bed are just not for me. Both are extremely dangerous.

I went for a few sessions a year or so ago but won't do it again. I was told that it is very bad for you so I don't think I will chance it ever again. Suntanning is just not for me and I certainly don't have the skin for it either.

Tanning Salons are there to be used, but it wont stop people from using it even when you show them what it may do in the long term . I have used it a few times before and I have to say I don't mind using it now and then, a sunbeds are bad but the sun is just as bad for your skin in the long run. As long as you use a very good sun protection lotions before and after being in the sun and tan bed, and making sure your skin gets it daily moisture I am sure your skin wont age.

I did about 3 sessions during December to prep my skin for the beach. I was told that it will help with my fair skin and I wouldn't burn as easily on the beach. I will say that I didn't burn as easily - as promised - but I don't think I will do it more than that. I much prefer being at the pool with natural sunlight.

This is the same as an overweight person going to Mc Donalds every day. They know its bad for them but still do it.
People who want to do something, will do it, even with knowledge of the consequences.

I have to agree with this blog, indoor tanning is a bunch of crap people use to make money and causing health problems for woman who think they look beautiful after a session. I once went for 3 sessions and my skin became yellow, i looked like a clown. Not pleasant at all!! The only way i like to treat my skin is in the sun when i do some gardening at home.

Hmm, now the question is this: do you know any people that go to the tanning salon? And the saucy follow up questions: Which drug habits do they have AND are they a bit on the loose side?

I have to agree with David. Natural is the way to go, besides, it also provides a FREE dose of vitamin D which helps with calcium absorbency, this helping the bones stay strong, it ALSO helps keep the immune system healthy.

I have only ever used a tanning salon once when I was in matric for matric dance. We you are young you don't notice the effects of spending hours in the sun. The problem is, I really think people look healthier with a tan and a bit of sun can make you look a lot thinner! I used to spend hours in the sun, I you can actually notice how it ages you. I have started spending less hours in the sun and making sure I put sun cream on everyday! I don't think tanning salon's are a good idea! Maybe they should develop better self tanning cream that's more affordable.

I saw a video of girls in a sun bed and it was not a pleasant view, just to see what some of them do i would never use one of them, lets just say that i dont want HIV to what these woman do, that was enough to put me off of sun beds, i won't risk it to do that anyway after watching final destination where the two girls burnt to death.
