Freedom of speech, Facebook and Twitter

With the whole issue of the ISIS terrorists recruiting people from around the world on the Internet, the issue of freedom of speech and privacy is once again going to raise its head. Obviously, there is a vast difference between speech that would encourage people to commit violent acts, which is illegal in most, if not all, countries in the world, and general freedom of speech. There is also however the question, and perhaps Ed Snowden, who did not do the world as many favours as his fans seem to think, when it comes to privacy. The fact of the matter is that ISIS or ISIL or IS, however one prefers to refer to them, are using Facebook and Twitter to communicate their messages and more importantly to recruit new members. At some point these companies, which are all based in America, need to start showing some allegiance to the citizens of the world, as well as their host country, and start, in my opinion, notifying the authorities the second their software picks up any reference to ISIS, ISIL, the leader of ISIS, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, and whatever other search terms are relevant. In many cases postings are made to Facebook and Twitter just before an attack commences and it should not be the job of authorities to obtain this information after people have been murdered. I am sure there are many who will scream that the second you start giving governments this power, that many of them, and the National Party in South Africa would be the best example, will start abusing that power. On the other hand, are these companies going to sit back and allow terrorists to use their products to kill people? The internet companies should seize the initiative and warn Government authorities immediately of any positive references to these terrorist organizations using their products to spread their message of hatred and death.

Well of course now that Gareth brought it up, it is now more of a safety issue than anything else. What government is going to stop freedom of speech? you can't stop people from talking to one another lol so regardless of what they going to try do, they will never be able to stop people, especially terrorists, before for the time of FB and Twitter they communicated and did what they wanted.

Why can't we live like in the old days without internet I think it would safe a lot of things. It is actually scary how things have changed in seconds.

Social media is dangerous... I agree that authorities should maybe be notified about suspicious activity but there should be a way to do it already...

If terrorists are going to use social media sites as a form of recruiting people or as a way to plan attacks then I definitely think that the social media companies that are being used as tools to achieve this, should get involved and find ways to detect suspicious terrorist behavior! I think plans and procedures should already be in place, it shouldn't even be a option.

Lately social media is used for wrong things and privacy is a story when you take part in social media.

I agree that social media and internet companies should immediately notify the government of any suspicious posts and internet activity. This would probably result in a lot of reports to governments, but rather take a cautious and safe approach to avoid terrorist attacks, killings and recruitments, after all lives of people are at stake.

We do not have any freedom of speech these days at all. You must be so careful of what you say

I feel that these days we don't have a freedom of speech anymore without watching over your shoulder. It should't be like that.

Social media is spiralling out of control. It honestly sound like an episode of "The Following". These insane cult like people need to be tracked & put to rest or isolated. The internet is quite a dark place - created by ourselves! I'd rather have my privacy invaded if it helps save lives.

With the internet being very anonymous I am sure the authorities could even use social media to lure out people who would want to join terrorist organizations by creating fake pages.

If I can easily stalk people on facebook the way the FBI can then surely the government can use Facebook to try stop ISIS

People don't understand free speech at all. Cliffs controversial reason for being fired from MNET. To clarify, Hateful opinion is not hate speech opinions (presented as such) are free to say anything. Hate surfaces when opinion is dished as fact. Sure there are things that arent protected by speech. Specifically, credible threats to someones life. Credible threats should be reported, investigated, hindered and prevented wherever possible.

Tersia  said:

Obviously something needs to be done about it... But the actual question is will there be something done about it? Everyone is to scared to approach a situation that seems to be dangerous or seems to be a big group of people involved.

I am pretty sure with the technology we have available today some sort of screening can be put in place for these type of things

I fail to understand how the human mind works? It really leaves me speechless to hear that ISIS is posting threats on social media, which threats become reality and nothing gets done about it,why...... "Freedom of Speech!!". But let someone post a comment on facebook/twitter that is slightly "racist" then all hell breaks loose. Real freedom of speech that does not threaten the lives of others, but is just someone's opinion and it is headline news.

Social media has really become a burden, when it once was a great tool to keep in touch with family and friends abroad, it has now become a tool to destroy lives.

The right to privacy as critical as it is, cannot under the current circumstances supersede world peace. If half of the world gets maimed by these terrorists, how will privacy be of any benefit to dead people?

Nikita  said:

If Facebook can use facial recognition to tag photos before they are uploaded then surely using keywords to pick up this sort of trouble shouldn't be a problem! After all this is a matter of saving lives

Bianca  said:
on Friday 05-Feb-16 08:58 AM
There needs to be some system in place in terms of notifying authorities because lives are at stake, I am not against these companies violating privacy if it is going to save the lives of hundred of innocent people.

I think any and everything must be done to try and stop IS this is starting to get out of hand and someone has to start taking control and make a plan to put a stop to terrorist action

these companies are seating at a very difficult position, be that as it may, one cannot justify the need privacy when the world is about to burn. the reality of the matter is that once IS are done with the countries in which they are currently operating, they are certainly going to spread to other countries. privacy cannot trumph the need for peace.
