Starbucks to arrive in South Africa

I see with some interest that the first two branches of Starbucks are about to open in South Africa.  One is going to be in Midrand and the other one close to our offices in Rosebank. They have signed a licence agreement with a company called Taste Holdings, which gives Taste Holdings exclusive rights to roll out a coffee chain in South Africa.  They apparently expect 5 Starbucks by the end of the year with a total of 16 Starbucks in a few years.  The Starbucks in Rosebank will be at the corner of Cradock and Tyrwhitt Avenues and will be a 485 square metre branch.

I am surprised that Starbucks took so long to move into South Africa and for many years, because I used to look into it, their website would reveal that if you were from South Africa there was no franchise opportunity available.  I was very interested in getting a few for South Africa.  The current company seems to be a small one – I can’t really understand why the roll out in South Africa would be so small otherwise – only 5 stores by the end of the year seems very small.

I think that Starbucks will succeed in South Africa, as it is a huge international brand with 22,000 branches around the world and high-priced coffee has proven to be one of those things that people are prepared to pay for.  They would obviously have to charge a different price to what they charge in America which is on average about $5 a drink which would work out to about R77,00 for a cup of coffee!

I saw the boards at Rosebank and I'll be there almost everyday but not for the coffee LOL... I'm not really a coffee person. I think the location is great because Krispy Creme is not too far and people will want coffee with their doughnuts I guess... I will stay away from both though!
I also feel like it will be a hype for a short time. Then again it is getting colder.
I do wonder if South Africans like coffee that much though.

I think people will lose interest in this just as quickly as they lost interest in Burger King. This is definitely something to try but I don't think South Africans love coffee enough to spend over R50 on a cup.

the price is a bit steep, maybe one day in my next life i will give it a try, i am not a coffee drinker, so it doesn't bother me that much.

Starbucks is as much of an addiction as cigarette smoking.
A very nice cup of coffee but not cheap, gives you no health benefits plus loads you with 13 spoons of sugar.(apparently Caramel Macchiato has 13 spoons of sugar!).

Will try it out when it comes, but not a huge franchise type of person. It will be when the opportunity arises. I do not mind where the coffee comes from as long as it is good, from Vida to Seattle or any other place that provides same

I think Starbucks will do great in South Africa. There is nothing better than a good cup of coffee. I am looking forward to have my first Starbucks Coffee.

Starbucks should do well initially based on their novelty value alone. I remember the ridiculous long queues when Mcdonalds and Burger King first opened outlets in RSA and they seem to be successful because of people's addiction to fast food. Starbucks will hope there is a similar coffee addiction once the novelty wears off.

Starbucks is amazing but lets hope they do not exploit the novelty and charge excessive rates. Good choice of placement - all the busy bees in the 'hub' of JHB will love it.

I have tried Star Bucks before and I really enjoyed it, I remember it being expensive in China. I think that I would have this from time to time only, as R77 for a cup of coffee is expensive.

I am not a coffee addict but have had Starbucks before. It was nice I guess? I hope they have considered the parking for the store as unlike most cities where a Starbucks would thrive from walking customers, in South Africa everyone is in a car so they need to be able to park. If they haven't catered for parking that may lead to decrease in business. Secondly, South Africa is has a warmer climate and perhaps that is why Starbucks hasn't come before, and also perhaps why it may not take off like it does in the cooler climates.

Suzanne  said:

I am sure they are going to do very well in South Africa and I am looking forward to having my first one as soon as they open.

On another note, Starbucks will without a doubt succeed insanely if Kaylee Mitchell is one of their customers. She is a dedicated coffee addict haha! Starbucks watch out, Kaylee is coming!

I have never tried Starbucks and as with everything that launches in SA, I will most certainly go and try it. Starbucks has slowly been filtering into South Africa, I have seen over the last six months or so that some garages and convenience stores have started stocking their iced coffees etc. The pricing of same is certainly high but I suppose it is about the experience. Very keen to try Starbucks!!

Kaylee  said:

I have been saying this for years! Bring starbucks into South Africa! I love starbucks and I think it will do well in South Africa as there is a new trend with coffee stops at major garages which has done incredibly well (I am a major culprit of supporting these stops). YAY great news and just up the road from the office.
