Unemployment rises to its highest level in a decade

The Rand has weakened recently, especially after data on 29 March showed that unemployment had risen to its highest level in more than a decade.  It is sad to read things like that, but it is not as if I have not written about it a lot on my blog.  There are so many uncompetitive laws in South Africa that really make it very difficult for overseas companies to come in and do business in South Africa.  The more unemployment increases of course, the more the ills of unemployment will affect us all – not only a weak economy, but of course higher rates of crime, etc, because many of those who are not employed are going to resort to other options.  The Cabinet issued a statement saying that it is “taking measures to deal with” a high unemployment rate. I wonder what those measures are with official unemployment now at 26,7% in South Africa!

Unofficial unemployment is of course far higher and it does not seem that any journalist is asking the right questions – let’s talk about the 6 million new jobs that the ANC promised its voters in the last election.  Where are those 6 million new jobs?  We now have unemployment at its highest level in a decade, so far from creating 6 million jobs, we now have less jobs than we had before and unfortunately neither the ANC nor the trade unions have yet started to learn their lessons.  We must hope it will not take them 20 or 30 years to learn, that you need to make conditions in South Africa conducive to business because only business will ultimately resolve the problems of unemployment.  The Government can’t employ everybody and we already have half of the country’s budget, if not more, already going on state employees’ salaries and benefits, and so if anything we need to retrench and fire government employees.  Somewhere along the line the ANC will have to abandon some of its philosophies when it comes to labour law, international companies and to move into the 21st century – it is after all 2016.  Arriving now would be better than never.

Tis is both saddening and scary - I couldn't agree more with Prishani, voters need to wake up and make a change. That's the first step in fixing our problems.

These days securing a joib is like:

"Oh, get a job? Just get a job? ... Well why don't I strap on my job helmet and squeeze down into a job cannon and fire off to job land, where jobs grow on jobbies!"

I cant believe that this is the world we live in. Work are getting more and more unavailable. With the salaries people get these days more people in a family must work to survive, which make the work opportunity rate lower than before.

Unemployment is rife everywhere. It is such a horrible notion to think that people are willing, but there is not enough out there for everyone. Then there is the government whom do not want foreigners to invest in our country, buy land etc and would this not help. The more jobs there are, i would say the better the country would start runnig. That and education.

It is very scary to think that someday my children will be living in this country.
I don't know what is going to happen to South Africa if things are going to carry on like this.
This is a beautiful place. Very sad to see South Africa going backwards like this.
Everyone can see that things are only getting worse but they keep on voting for the same people that are responsible for this.
When are the people going to wake up?

Unemployment in South Africa is now higher than it has ever been before, with almost one-third of the labour force out of work or discouraged. This situation we are facing would not be changing soon as this cannot be resolved easily and the ANC is not focusing on the creating more employment opportunities, another important fact that we need to look at is that constantly increasing salaries through the unions is another problem that we face as not all the companies and firms are able to maintain these increases and have to reduce their labour force and make use of alternative machines that work more effective and efficient for half the cost which increases unemployment even more.

Some people don't want to work, they are so lazy and are just waiting for their ship to come in, at our Pretoria office we had so many cleaning ladies I stopped counting, but yet again our government doesn't set a very good example for their people.

The sooner voters in our country realise that who they vote for eventually has an effect on our economy and also employment in this country, maybe then we can hope things like unemployment will decrease and we can actually look at proper ways to address this very serious issue in our society, because it is evident that the current mechanisms we have in place are not successful.

Our unemployment rate is so low and every time you drive now you see more and more homeless people. It doesn't really help the crime rate and our country.

Yes it's a proven fact that unemployment leads to a higher rate of crime. Voters need to realise that their votes impact a whole country. Unfortunately in this country it's not in a good way and very problematic.

Its so sad because we live in such a beautiful country , and South Africa could do so well if we just had people in power that feel the need to empower us and motivate our country to change , be the best we can be

Some pessimists may think that it is in the interest of the ANC if RSA truly became a Welfare State. Between elections corruption is rife and when the time comes for voting the indigent person needs only to hear a rumor of grants being taken away to persuade him/her to stay with the ANC.

You would think that after 20 years and the loss of so many jobs that the government would own up to the fact that its thinking is wrong. I doubt strongly that the current government will be the one to bring about the change. I sincerely hope that those who are unemployed will now change where they put their X.

Helen  said:

Yes, so high level of unemployment does not help to get the crime level down. And I do not think government worried so much about it! Always empty promises from ANC just to keep the place worm. I think it is the time to change laws and let new investors come to our country.

The low unemployment rate is a real problem in our country and is just encouraging poverty and increasing the amount of people who are on the streets. My father has been unemployed for over two years and it is a reality that he is amoungst millions who are all just putting every effort into finding employment. Our high unemployment rate is certainly not helping the weaking Rand. Our country in my opinion needs a government that benefits it's citizens.

Sandra  said:

I experienced the same. After my degree It was STILL impossible to find a job, apart from other factors playing a role. That's why I worked along side my brother, because with a degree it's difficult, now imagine after high school with no further training or education? I'm not saying that tertiary educaion necessarily gets you a job, but it does help, even if it's a mediocre position. Unemployment was never this high, but with the new technological advances, it makes work so much more easier, because you wont need to hire as many people as back in the day. What could have been a 10 man group work, is now a single mans job thanks to technology etc. Also, the economy around the world contributes to the fact that unemployment levels are too high, too many people, to little positions
