Can I bet on your horse?

This is one of the questions that drive me mad the most.  I think I have written about it to a certain extent before, but people who are not in racing generally only ask you if they can have a bet on your horse when it is in a big race, where statistically it does not have much of a chance and is at big odds – again indicating that it does not have much of a chance.  Baritone was 75/1 in the SunMet, precisely because most experts did not think he had much of a chance.

I knew that if they went fast, which they don’t usually do in the Cape, he would come stone last and said as much.  His only chance was if they went slow – which they usually do, and it turned into a sprint in which case he would have a better chance as he can finish fast.  So, when the race began and they went fast I knew long before they reached the final straight that he had zero chance of even running a place, and in fact the only surprise to me is that he actually managed to beat three of the 15 horses home because in a fast run race he really and truly should have come last because there is reason to believe he does not see out a hard 2000 metres.

The time to bet in racing is early in a horse’s career when it is showing potential and it is running against horses that are not as good.  Often then the profit will also be much smaller – it might be 50% or 80%, but it will be at those odds because the horse is far more likely to win and the people who have to pay you out are not fools and they are not going to just go and make their money by giving ridiculous odds!

I like to promote horseracing and encourage people to have the fun of a small bet, but truthfully the only time not to bet it is the time when most people actually do bet – on the big day when they are often fairly surprising results, particularly if you are talking about Greyville Racecourse (where the July is run) and where top horses from all over the country are running against each other for the first time and you don’t necessarily have form to be able to compare each one to the other.

When I have a bet I look out for value and I look out for a horse that I believe is going to win. So, for example, I believe that my horse Sabina’s Dynasty will win her next race out – her last run was sensational when coming from the back of the field to come second.  I also have a new horse who has not run yet, called Made to Conquer who I am told is very good and while he probably will not win the first time out, he is going to win either his second or third race and that is when I will be looking to have a bet on him.  In most of those cases one is lucky if the odds double your money – but I would rather have a winning bet and double my money than have a bet on Baritone at 75/1 (I never put a single cent on him) when I know that horseracing is not the same as a roulette table and he does not have the realistic chance in the race.

I suppose people ask this question because you need to know some history and background of the horses racing when betting, I think horse racing is complicated and don't ever think anybody can predict the winner

One thing you never ask a person is how and for who and where to bet. Betting on a horse is a gamble, yes there are odds and favourites etc. etc. but at the end of day, anything can happen. So it will be silly for anyone to ask who or what to bet on.

To bet or to gamble is not something I am good in at all. I'll rather stay far far away of anything that involves me having to bet or gamble on something or someone. It properly does have a lot to do with understanding and knowing the game and playing a lot for someone to win, but I would rather not even try.

I really have no clue as to what its about betting on a horse and to be honest, I really do not have money to even attempt betting or gambling. I would rather go watch a horse show then bet on one. :)

I think one needs to understand horse betting very well before trying to take a chance on betting.

I guess you lose some and and you win some, as long as the outcome is an income. Better luck next time Baritone. Keep trying, the expert in anything was once a beginner.

I think that you need to look at betting on horses with your head, instead of you heart. Although you might have a love for one of the outsiders (especially if it's your own), you need to think of where you will actually make your money. Interesting world I am much to cautious to enter.

Better luck next time Baritone. This is very informative. I don't really know anything about betting on horses. I will keep this in mind if I ever want to go bet on horses.

I dont know why people would ask if they can bet on a persons horse probably trying to find out if you think your horse will run well or not, I would rather bet on the favorites of the day as they have a chance to get in one of the top spots. Although this should be done with a good mindset and not to win money or spend all you have. Enjoy the event and look at the horses when they are on the field.

Interesting how betting on horses and gambling is very similar yet different. In both cases you have to know what you doing, it can be very risking if a lot of money is involve, sad how some people can get or are addicted to horse betting and gambling. I for one is way to stingy with my money to waste it like that. But I think it can be fun if you go with the right mindset. Knowing you gonna bet and might lose it and not to care about it. Bad losers should stay away.

I am yet to enter the world of betting on horses but if and when that day ever comes I would be sure to bet on a horse in its early days. I'm not opposed to a small win...for now

I've never bet on anything in my life and the only reason being that I wouldn't know on who to bet and how much money to bet on it. I wouldn't feel confortable betting on something I know nothing about. It feels like it would be a total waste of my hard earned money.

I think that its risky to bet on horses or any other gambling without knowing how and what to do. The best strategy for us that don't have a clue would be to just accept tips and advice from more knowledgeable people.

I have never bet on horses and I don't think I will ever bet on them because a lot of people lose a lot of money because of betting yes you get days where you are lucky and you win but then again you get days where you lose a lot of money .I don't like betting at all

I don't bet because I truly do not understand how to works. However when I went with the company to watch the horse races, I had a lot of fun betting and it made me focus and watch the races more than being there socially.

Betting on Horses is so technical i would have no clue where to start. People can have one look at a horse and see that its 0.05kg over weight, or not feeling well or that they are tired.

Jolene   said:

On my first bet, I lost all my money. At least it was not much. But it was so much fun and it makes the race much more exciting if you actually bet on a horse, rather than to just sit and watch.

I still need to go to the races one day! If and when I go, I will definitely be placing a bet for a bit of fun and to have a horse to be rooting for! I'd probably have no clue which horse to bet on, but I imagine all the excitement of the races will make it a day worth remembering!

I must say I don't like gambling either but if you know what you are doing, it can be very fun. Spending a bit of money of a Black Jack table for instance ;) Winners know when to stop though :) My grandfather was big into the horses when he was still alive. I wish I knew more about it...

My betting/gambling talents only stretch as far as the Lotto and Powerball. I have never bet on any race at all and I honestly wouldn't know the first place to start comparing odds and favours. I know of a lot of people who are extremely into betting on horses and races and seem to have a talent for it, perhaps maybe it something I should look at taking a shot at.

By the sounds of it, before you start betting first shadow someone who can teach you the ropes. I don't enjoy any form of gambling generally and I bear no knowledge of the tricks of the trade. Having said that I will rather leave it to those who know what they are doing

Nicolle  said:

I must admit, I do not have a mind for statistic or for working out probabilities. I do, however, have the mind for worst case scenario. In the matter at hand, losing the bet, means losing your money, which means you may go out to binge drink, party, become unreasonable and then die. This is the worst case scenario. Betting leads to dying which means I will not place a bet on anything that I am not 100% sure of.

brumilde  said:
on Friday 03-Feb-17 08:39 AM
Racing is gambeling, so its about luck as well. Sometimes the horse with the lowest stats wins, sometimes the favourite wins. And lots of things can have a sway on who wins that day, the weather for instance some horses have more stamina to run on a wet field, some have speed but no stamina so that will slow them down. the jockey also needs to know when to hold the horse back and when to let it go and oush forward

Clare  said:
on Friday 03-Feb-17 08:38 AM
I must say that I have not bet on a horse ever, there must be a trick in all of these gambles, So I do agree with Alexis, anything can go wrong, being that the best horse could be the worst horse because something has gone Wrong.. But other then that I love horses they very beautiful and Big.. Good Luck with all you horses this year and many years to come.

Nina  said:

Alexis  said:
on Friday 03-Feb-17 08:17 AM
I suppose it is all about statistics in a way and you need to look at the horses and how they are doing. However, anything can happen in a race regardless, so the horse whom has the best chance can have something go wrong...touch wood. I have never bet on a horse and would rather do roulette if anything, more of a chance
