No substitute for hard work

I get asked by people, as if I know the answers, and I certainly don’t, as to what helps with success.  I generally think that reading is very helpful, there is so much you can learn from reading, but truthfully I don’t believe there is any substitute for hard work.  Those that work harder will normally achieve more than those who are brighter and work less.  It is as simple as that.  I am still hungry, after many years, for success, and I just keep working hard.  Once my office is closed in mid-December I still had banking to do for a number of clients who I wanted to still be paid, even though the money has only came to us from the Road Accident Fund after the closing date of most other firms, and correspondence to attend to, including from one particularly aggressive client.

I am not saying I don’t take a holiday – I do – but the truth is I still see what is going on in my e-mails, I still attend to banking during most of the holiday and I come up with ideas, dictate blogs, e-mails to clients, newsletters, concepts and ideas for brochures, etc.  In my spare time I read books about business, productivity, time management, investment, etc.  I understand that most people will not find that particularly exciting, but you must understand if that is what you are competing against, it becomes very hard to match or beat that person or company if you are relaxing on the beach while they are putting in the hours.  Some people have a capacity for putting in hard work, and not complaining that they are working or thinking that work is something that ends at 5pm.

I don’t think that everybody needs to put in those types of hours – it does not suit everybody and not everybody is after the same level of success or material reward.  It probably, based on my own experience, suits those best who see it all as a game or a competition – in other words, have a desire to be the best at something, not because of how much money they will make, or how much money they will get back per hour that they put in, but simply because they want to be the best, they want to beat the competition and they want to be number one.  The money will follow, but many people, and I am one of them, are not actually motivated by money as much as we are by wanting to be the best at what we do.

Being the best at what you do, whether it is in cooking, being a mother, being a golfer, or running a personal injury law firm specialising in Road Accident Fund cases, requires you to put in tons and tons of time and anybody who thinks otherwise is a fool and anybody who says otherwise is a liar.  There just is no substitute for hard work – regardless of what your passion is.  So I guess, that is my answer to what it takes to be successful, although of course spending hundreds of hours doing the same thing that is not working is not going to lead to success.  It does still need to be combined with all the other things, including some good business sense, logic and a little dash of luck along the way.

I completely agree with you. If you also have a passion for what you do, you would not even feels the extra hours that you are working and to put in a little extra effort for example to read books will only benefit you in the end. People who complain or even say that it doesn't take hard work has either got everything handed to them their whole life or is not in the field of work that they want to be. And if you are at a place where your passion is not, then make the best out of the situation until you can be who you want to be. It's not going to help if you complain abut it, then do something about it. It's great that you still want to learn more and be on top of all that is going on around you and It is because you still have a hunger that your business will stay at the top and be one of the best in it's field and will achieve great results for years to come! As soon as someone gives up or just let be then obviously the business will have a down fall.

Knowing what motivates you to be a hard worker can help you remain inspired and it can be your personal driving force to achieve new goals and push through a monotonous routine.

I'd imagine that people ask you, because they believe that you have the secret recipe to success! I am reminded of: “Failing to plan is planning to fail …Hope is NOT a plan.” – Harrison Jones. Also, repetition is often the key to success. Becoming submerged and well-versed in a certain field, career or concept. I mean Doctors do it, Experts do it, even Attorneys do it.

I agree, Hard work always pays off. The important thing is to always want to better yourself and to not sit still. You can not be satisfied looking back and doing just okay - try harder and if you put your mind to it you can achieve everything.

The important thing is that one should never be completely satisfied with what you have achieved and continue to chase success in everything you take on.

My mom always use to say, that hard work never kill anyone and just make you stronger. But I always believe that only working hard is not enough to be successful! It is working smart too and being consistent what you do! I would agree with most of the comments below that yes we are all different and HUMANS, and all depend what we want to achieve in our lifes? Very important to have as well the right couch who would give a great example and show how we can achieve great results.

There is no easy way to succeed, the only way to succeed and achieve your goals both on a personal level and employment wise, is to always work hard and take great pride in what you do. At the end of the day, your work speaks for you and it is all that people will remember. If you are lazy/were lazy, your work will show it and so will your ability to achieve your goals. I certainly take great pride in every task that I perform and each task receives the same amount of dedication from me. I wouldn't have it any other way and I am glad that working hard was instilled in me by my parents.

The bottom line is, if you want to be successful, you have to work hard. I always find it fascinating that once people become successful and they have reached their "goals" they sit back, relax and now just get other people to do the hard work to keep their success going. I personally dont have much respect for people who have that mentality. I have great respect for those who have achieved their goals and still work hard to maintain their achievement and set new goals. That is what you a true success story.

Hard work is key, however I also believe in what Steve Jobs had to say- " Stay hungry, Stay foolish" "and trust that all the dots will eventually join along the way". To me that equates to working hard, never being satisfied with just enough and enjoying the bit of luck that you do get along the way.

I agree with the blog and most of the comments. Hard work pays off, no doubt. I truly believe that what you put into life is what you will get out. It definitely helps to get rewarded and to stay motivated when someone recognizes your hard work but you can’t always expect a pat on the back. Set goals for yourself and once you achieved them you don’t need any recognition from anyone but yourself.

I agree hard work always pays off, sometimes I think people feel that they do not get any recognition for working hard and putting in the hours so they just stop because they lose motivation, but one needs to remember that hard work will always pay off somewhere somehow.

Of course hard work will result in success and reward, but one must take into consideration working effectively or rather working 'smart'. It may take a person half the time to do the same job as another, and that other who takes far longer should not be percieved as 'putting in the hours'. Hard work is to be coupled with effective working, being one step ahead so that you are not snowed under. Of course, when it does comes to the grind and having to put in the longer hours there is no substitute. A good work ethic is always commendable and you certainly do have a suberp one at that! Cheers to many more years of success!

There is definitely no substitute for hard work. I think you always have to be motivated and also enjoy what you do. You have to be up to date with what's happening in the news and also you have to be willing to put in time and sacrifice a lot of what you enjoy. I think it is substantial to have a vison and stick to the goals you set for yourself.

Agrees, such a hard question and good read, and everybody has their own opinion on the subject, some motivational some not so much . We are all different and work and think different. Motivation and team work gets people going, rather build someone up then tare them down. a good team on your side helps you as well. As they would say a well oiled machine with all the knobs and gears working in perfect harmony, but how does one achieve harmony. You need balance in your work and private life and for most people to get the one leg right is hard, but hard work and focus and help always keeps the persons moral and hopes on the go, and this makes you strive for more. You need to pace yourself as well. and find the inspiration to succeed in the 1st place. Family and friends, work and personal. we all want to be successful in all parts of our lives, i find that if my child is happy i feel i am very successful. One also have the problem where others think to be on top you have to step on others. a dog eat dog world as they would say but at the end of the day we all human...

Life is about doing the best you are able to do in every situation, such as work, cooking, studies and in my case running as well. I find myself being very competitive in certain situations such as in running, I always want to run faster as the previous time and make up a few extra places. I have to say that it does help being competitive and it gives you a drive towards a goal and to improve. I love cooking and always trying to improve my skills there as well. I think success can be seen as big or small depending on what each person wants to achieve in life. I believe as long as you do your best every day in everything you do, that can be seen as success in your own way. Striving for excellence is an important part of professionalism in any job.

I agree with you 110% It takes hard work and dedication to get what you want and where you want to be! You cannot sit back and expect others to do all the work while you reap the benefits. Unfortunately, some don't know how to actually put work in - they are just spoiled really... Good luck trying to get anywhere with that idea of life!

I also believe that hard work will pay off. You can’t sit and do nothing and expect everything will come to you. People that are successful work very hard to be where they are now. To set goals is an excellent way to get up top. It is just sad that sometimes the people who are working hard don’t receive any credit. I think the best thing you can get out of it is the experience.

I can only agree! My mom always taught me that the Spirit of excellence in me must flow through every task or challenge that I accept. She also taught me that if you lack passion in anything that you take on, you will fail.I was raised with the mantra that Passion & Excellence will bring you success and that a successful, happy life is not determined by how much money you have in the bank, but how much passion you have in your heart!

It takes hard work and a lot of hours to achieve your goal. A person don't necessary have to prove that you are working hard, you are doing it for yourself and the company that you are working at. You don't have to prove anything to anyone. Just keep on doing what you do best

I believe hard work in everything that you do pays off. Sometimes it takes a while to see the results and that is the danger because people then quit instead of persevering. But of course if you keep doing the same thing and getting no result then maybe it is time to seek a new direction to invest your hard work and efforts in. I believe a lot of people work very hard and never achieve success because they are working hard in the wrong direction.

Jessica M  said:

I agree there really is no substitute for hard work. However I also see that sometimes hard workers do not get noticed, especially if they work underneath someone. I also believe like Richard Brandson does that if you want success you need to have happy employees, happy employees work harder for you. So if I were to ever open my own company, that is exactly what I would want to do. Some people do take chances but not all people.

Thabitha  said:

I agree 100% with this Blog, if you don't work hard and give your best you will never reach your goal. But on the other hand hard works never really get noticed, And when they do its only when they make a mistake or do something wrong, people are not perfect we all make mistakes but people should not be ugly with people when they make a mistake because you not perfect either.. So to all Followers on this Blog be the best that you can be and work hard.

Nina  said:

I believe if you have a passion for what you do, you will always be willing to go the extra mile and try your best. If you are not motivated and if you are not working in a good environment, it definitely will be difficult to always put in extra work and do more than what is expected of you.

I believe that hard work is the answer - a person does not get to where they want to be without any effort. It is also about working smart, you get a task, manage it in such a way that instead of it taking you hours, its takes 30 min. I am always tweaking the way I do things to make sure that I am far more efficient in what i do - it is something that has to be worked on on a daily basis
