Colon and rectal cancers

I read recently about colon and rectal cancers rising in young people.  Apparently, every generation born since 1950 has seen more and more colon and rectal cancer.  People born in 1990 or thereafter have double the risk of colon cancer and quadruple the risk of rectal cancer – but experts do not know why.  I would guess it is the junk food industry, but the experts do not know wat the cause is.

They think that other cancers have reduced due to fat people reducing smoking and eating healthier, noting that people who are eating good foods, vegetables, fibre and less red meat have a lower rectal cancer risk.  There certainly appears to be some link between the colon cancer and obesity, but the doctors are struggling to work out what exactly the link is, apart from recommending that more people are screened for a colonoscopy.

It is definitely the processed foods we are eating these days, there are so many preservatives in all the processed foods we eat and every supplier wants to increase the life span of their products. For instance how is it possible that food stays "fresh" in a sealed tin or packet for 2-3 years. In my opinion it obviously cannot be healthy and the preservatives are causing cancer.

This is concerning. The link could be so many things, what we put in our bodies today is very different to 50 years ago. We also have the technology today for this to be picked up at a very early stage and in larger numbers.

Its crazy how rife cancer has gotten in the human race of today. It used to be rare that you see a cancer patient but now I even know a few who are suffering with it. :(

I have read that every 36 minutes a child is diagnosed with cancer in the US and every two minutes around the world. This is more than any other disease and is the leading cause of death in kids (more than AIDS, asthma and diabetes combined). Its really sad. Cancer is a silent killer that destroys lives quicker than a blink of an eye.

The experts fail to mention that our food is pumped with hormones in today's times in order to "get more out of it". The hormones and "steriods" we consume on a daily basis will indeed cause problems in the body and yes cancer can form. Unfortunately, not everyone can afford completely organic food and they will just settle for hormone filled meat and chicken and processed foods. Its no wonder people today suffer with so many illnesses.

Cancer is a slow and painful illness which has unfortunately crept into each of our families in some way shape or form. South Africans are even more at risk because of the sunny weather we have and the lifestyles we live. I think the colon and rectal cancers also have a lot to do with the hormones that we find in our foods these days.

Isn't human nature fascinating? It seems we are always living in this vicious cycle, where, one generation tries to get it right and the next generation gets it terribly wrong. Hopefully, we get it right.

It sounds like when carrying a lots of weight, is at a high risk of attracting different illnesses including Colon and rectal cancers. I think would be best to try and stick in eating vegetables, less red meat and move a bit away from eating junk food.

they have a 3 phase injection now to help prevent cervical cancer or rather lower the risk one would say, it is expensive but this is a good start to the fight against cancer./ there is even a proposal that the government want to give this injection to girl starting from 10 years to prevent this terrible disease

It is definitely the food we eat all the food now gets grown much quicker with serious and all sort of preservatives.

Telling the truth that I have never heard anywhere in the world so much about Cancer and how many people suffer from it, like I am hearing in South Africa. I want to be wrong! But also here we have the best treatment and doctors in the world to treat cancer. Already from very young age we must look after yourself and eat more organic vegetables, good food and of course exercise. This lifestyle will stimulate to be positive and full of energy, Try very hard not to get to the point of being obsessive and depressed! And being all the time stressed can also cause cancer!!!

That is actually very sad. Nowadays you hear of more and more people dying of cancer, it's getting more common for someone to have cancer. Which is really bad, especially young children. I also think it's quite a cruel way to go as you do suffer for months and the people around you suffer with you as they have to see what you are going through - that is if you catch the cancer at an early stage, so many people don't even know when they have it. Hopefully doctors can find the reason why it has become so common so that we can lower our risk of getting any type of cancer.

If there is a link between the colon cancer and obesity, its simply means lots of people are affected or will be affected, they really need to find out what trigger it so that people will avoid taking poison into their bodies.

A study was recently done on mice by the National Institutes of Health, and found that reducing body fat not only leads to better overall health but also to a minimized risk of colon cancer. This is just another reason for people to make a concerted effort to lead a healthier lifestyle.

This is scary, and it is often a topic people shy away from and are afraid to address. I think it is important to be educated on all health risks and issues. The more you know the better for you!

Definitely not my area of expertise but sure sounds frightening, even the mere idea of a colonoscopy doesn't sit well with me. Hopefully they find the cause soon - prevention is better than a cure.

I believe that it is the lifestyle we all live now and the food we eat that causes problems. Compared to how it was back in the day, the risks are higher these days

Jadine   said:

Our diets will always have a link to cancer of the colon etc, based on the fact that what you put into your body will always have a direct effect on what happens inside of it and what eventually comes out of it. The colon takes strain when there is obesity concerned as there is extra pressure placed on it due to the additional body fat surrounding it.

I totally agree with this blog. As people don't live so long anymore as they used to. The average life span at the moment is 68 years and 6 months for males and 73 years and 6 months for females. I really think it is because of our lifestyles.

I personally think there could be some truth to the correlation between colon cancer and obesity but I do not agree with it fully. My gran had colon cancer but she was most definitely not obese. She did consume a lot of sugar and I know that that must have had some sort of contribution to her cancer but that's about it.
This generation is definitely exposed to more illnesses and diseases though - due to junk food and sugar - I agree with you. It's actually really sad.

Anyone can get cancer we all have cancer cells and it just depends on your genetics or something to trigger it
I think that unhealthy living can add to your risk to get cancer
It’s a good thing to go for regular check-ups and try and live healthy

Jessica Apfel   said:

I am not convinced that there is a correlation between obesity and colon cancer. Human beings all possess cancer cells and genetics can be one of the reasons that lead cancer to spread and grow and thus become harmful. As a young and relatively fit person, I myself have been through this ordeal and it is not pleasant!

I think colon cancer can be very painful and very life threatening. It is important to ensure you eat healthy and maybe this can decrease the chances of getting it.

I actually recently read an article lately that it is essential to take a colon cleanser once in a while. Obviously not everyday but once in a while every year, just to clean out your system of all the junk digested is quite beneficial.

I think colon cancer is very painful to have. It's so scary to know that we are at high risk to get this cancer. That's why it's so important to be healthy. Eat clean and exercise every day and most of all live life to the fullest you’ll never know what will happen tomorrow.

Cancer is a terrible disease that makes the people who get it extremely ill. I had a friend who passed away from breast cancer but cancer was in the bloodline. Their father passed away from cancer and I have subsequently heard that her eldest brother now has it as well.

I guess being unhealthy "obesity" makes you more vulnerable for all illnesses. I also think it has a lot to do with the food you eat and eating healthy is expensive. It is certainly one illness I don't ever want nor wish on my worst enemy. A few of my family members and friends has passed due to cancer. I also know a few people who has survived cancer but not without the scars.

Juliet  said:

Cancer is a terrible disease no matter which one you get. Unfortunately, it almost seems unavoidable nowadays with scientists exposing more and more causes of cancer ranging from reheating cooking oil, braaied meat, chemicals in certain toothpastes, chemicals in certain body lotions and the list goes on and on. It just seems that every day we are all exposed to the risk of getting cancer.

Nina  said:

Wouldn't be surprised if there is some sort of link between these cancers and the unhealthy lifestyles some people are upholding. Unfortunately cancer is one of those diseases that can't always be prevented by living healthy, but at least if you try to live healthy, you know you have done your part.

Clare  said:

That's really scary to read, But I know that you are born with Cancer cells it can take anything to trigger it off. I once read a story of a little child running around a car and then he nicked his ear then a few weeks later they found Cancer in his head, maybe it wasn't that accident that caused it but is just shows you that things happen.
