True Religion files for bankruptcy

Readers of my blog will remember I have detailed jeans in the jean market before and the fact that I really never thought True Religion was well designed jeans.  I know that they are popular here in South Africa, but their popularity has been going downhill in many other countries for many years and obviously filing for bankruptcy tells you how bad things have become.   Apparently, this is largely because of women in particular are moving to wearing leggings and to yoga pants – they say those types of pants which typically retail at about $89 or $98 are far better value than the jeans at $300.  Some jeans are benefiting though, Levi’s in particular, which are considered a cheaper brand of jeans, are doing better than before but the premium, more expensive jeans such as 7 For All Mankind and Hudson fell 8% last year.  Men apparently favour Levi’s and women apparently tend to favour denim from economy brands like H&M, Old Navy and Forever 21.

The best part of shopping is walking into an Edgars, Woolworths, China-Mall shop etc, picking up a pair of jean, with the label proudly reading: "Made in China" All I am saying, is that, at the end of the day, all you are paying for is the name.

I have Guess jeans that I have had for about 3 years and they still look good as new. I think it is a good idea to have at least 1 quality pair of jeans because they do last much longer.

I've never even heard about this brand jeans. I only have 2 or 3 pear of jeans in my closet so its fair to say that I don't really like waring jeans. I like shopping for cloithes that fit my pocket.

I am not familiar with True Religion jeans, leggings is very comfortable but you always need a good pair of jeans.

I have to say, i go with comfort. I don't care about brands. Maybe if more people were wearing comfort rather than "fashion" / "brands" they would not pull away from specific types and this will also have the fashion industry sit up and take note of things. I

The price though for just one pair of jeans is too much but if you can afford go for it

I never buy clothes just because it’s a specific brand if I like the style and the price fits my pocket I will buy it
I’m not a fan of True religion jeans the style as Angelique said is not up to date with the latest fashion
These days I prefer wearing leggings it’s much more comfortable and you can wear it with anything

I have never liked True religion jeans - not up todate with the latest fashion designs, nor are they really affordable. H&M is competition for most brands these days, so is cotton on. True Religion do not cater for all body types nor is is flattering. I am yet to see a pair of True Religion jeans that is flattering on someone.

Wow, this is kinda sad. I have always wanted a pair of True Religion jeans but have never actually had the motivation to spend that amount of money on one pair of jeans. I do believe however that if you are specializing in a specific market where your clothing is insanely expensive, your chance of success is quite slim. Your target market is smaller and the reality is, the wealthy are the only ones who can afford jeans in that price range. The average person has far better things to do with that amount of money.

I am not one for name brands - if I try it on and it looks good, I buy it. Sorry to hear that a company is going under...however a new will emerge and be the next fad in the industry

Your jeans don't necessarily have to be expensive to be comfortable. Women overall will opt for a cheaper brand when it comes to jeans.

It's not surprising. I never thought True Religion was a particularly good brand of denim and with all the trends at the moment favoring comfort it was only ever going to be the strongest denim brands which would survive. I love the versatility of denims and I'll opt for quality over quantity in this regard. Everyone needs a good pair of denims! Having said that- It's the most comfortable thing to put on a pair of yoga pants and if I had the choice, I would opt for comfort any day.

It sounds like the design of the True Religion brand jeans is not well done, and sounds like as well as their too high prices, causing the loss to the brand.

The price of jeans are just ridiculous. Some of the jeans are really nice like Sissy boy or Guess but then again you only pay for the brand. I'll rather buy something that looks nice and that's not too expensive. Most people wear tights these days it's more comfortable and cheap.

Ive never really heard of True Religion Jeans but I googled them and they really not for me, i would never pay that much for any jeans let alone those ones. I rarely look at brand names with jean i just look at the style, the fit and the price.

Me and my husband had a good laugh about the "True Religion" jeans, we saw this brand in one of american stores in Carnival casino, they were ridiculously priced and looked so old fashion. I was thinking who would pay so much for Jeans like this! And now I am reading this blog, LOL

I have also not heard of True Religion jeans before, but then again I am not really familiar with brand name jeans and wont recognise the difference from brand names and no name jeans. I am not surprised that woman tends to buy the leggings and yoga pants more seeing that it is so much more comfortable and you get the legging that resemble a jean nowadays and it is quite popular.

I don't really know True Religion Branded Jeans but Calvin Klein Branded Jeans are great for men too. My husband owns two pairs from buying it 10 years ago. Yes, they were expensive but obviously worth the price if he is still wearing it till this day. They fit great too! Me, I wear whatever brand that I feel comfortable with. :)

I am also not familiar with True Religion jeans. When it comes to jeans, I would rather buy 2 or 3 cheaper ones than 1 very expensive designer jean. The jeans that you can buy at H&M and Cotton on or Factorie are not bad quality and definitely better priced.

I didn't even know that you get Jeans call True Religion! I think that i am one of the women that proffer to wear leggings and yoga pants. I enjoy wearing something that I can run around in.

Honestly, True Religion Jeans are not very appealing to me.
Funny enough I only buy Jeans from H&M and Forever 21. Oh and Factorie...
The material is of good quality and they are a great fit. Certain jeans just don't fit me well, like Levis. I have never owned a pair purely because of the fit.
Sad news for True Religion.

I have never seen a pair of Religion Jeans to be honest, I don't think I would pay R990 rand, you could get 3 or 4 pairs of Jeans from Edgars for that price. Most people would rather go for quantity than quality

Jessica Apfel   said:

I could not fathom spending that much on a pair of jeans - in SA they are as much as R990! In a country where every thing is on the rise, people have less surplus income to be purchasing luxuries at such an exorbitant price! Perhpas they should look at appealling to a different of the market to boost sales?
