Big day as Parliament votes

It’s a very big day in South Africa today with the secret vote taking place in parliament. I personally didn’t think that a secret vote would be allowed, and so that’s the first surprise. Is that a sign of extreme confidence that very few ANC members will actually vote against the President? I don’t know, and given that almost all the media predicted that the vote would not be secret, it seems even those in the "know" didn't know!

Whether approximately 50 members of the ANC are going to vote against the president remains to be seen but either way, it’s a big day in South Africa.

I’d love to know your prediction, as to how the vote is going to go today and whether or not the motion of no-confidence in the state president will succeed?

It was a sad moment when the votes were counted and we heard the final verdict but at least we know that we are taking baby steps to changing our country and trying to make a difference. No matter how small.

I am also commenting way after this voting day. But as we expected Zuma is still in power. Strange how everyone voted for him but when they want him out they can seem to telle up votes to get him out?

This is the show time for ANC, and maybe I am late with my predictions but nothing has change so far. This subject gives me nausea, can not stand this corrupted government.

aaah and Zuma is staying, no shocker there. as i said on another blog about South africans who stood together and begged for zuma to go. we have no say. wake up. we just provide them with our tax money and they continue to rule as they want

I’m a little too late to give my prediction, I guess we have tried everything, even in secret the people won’t vote against Zuma, which is very sad! As I understand it they believe if they vote against him they vote against the ANC…

I never thought that the president was going to loose his title, but I can definitely predict that in 2019 less people will be voting for the ANC, especially after hearing the debate.

I did not for one minute think that the president would be voted out. There are too many mp's out there who are benefitting by his being in power. Lose there jobs.....not a chance. The majority of them are in it for themselves. As Pravin Gordhan said, the estimated amount of money that members of parliament have taken through their connection with the Gupta's is in the region of R2 billion. Where are they going to vote out the king pin who is the go-between between them and the money.......................not in Africa.

Well I can't say I am shocked at the outcome. I didn't expect anything to change. The corruption runs deep in this country. Maybe one day things will change.

They just wasted their own time of course nothing will happen to President Zuma. With money you can convince anyone. I really don't know why people still keep him as a president.

The fact that the ballot is now secret was a pleasant surprise, however, it remains to be seen whether those voting will actually vote against the president if this will ultimately mean losing their positions and the benefits coupled therewith. Let us hope that this will be eighth time lucky.

Any prediction is a tough call to make. We can only hope for the best! Today is a big day for South Africa. I just hope that they vote what's right! #ZumaMusFall
It's not safe on the roads today. I saw it for my self... And I do hope everyone is aware of the dangers on the road...

It is a really hard prediction to make because it could go either way. but with it being a secret vote people are more likely to vote without fear of getting fired etc. But it will be really interesting to see what will happen.

Let’s hope for the best for People of South Africa, I think prediction is difficult on this one and think that anything can happen, I think the secret voting might make a change in voting results.

I think that the ANC MP's carry the power in this vote. They know that they have to vote "wisely"-if Zuma is voted out, there could be a cabinet reshuffle and those that are Anti-Zuma could then lose their positions. I think this as also why there's a call for MP's, especially ANC MP's, to vote with their conscience. I personally think that, based on this and previous failed attempted motions of no confidence against Zuma, the motion will not be successful. I do hope though, that I'm wrong with my prediction.

It gives me some hope that the votes will be secret. I honestly have no idea what to expect, but I'm hopeful that this might be the end of the road for Zuma.

I didn't even know a secret vote was allowed. I hope it's a great outcome and of course benefits SA. It's a difficult to say but I think Zuma stepping down is a step in the right direction.

This is a difficult one to predict and I hope everyone is going to do the right thing for South Africa.

Angelique Jurgens  said:

It is really a hard one to predict. I am however glad it is a secret vote because then perhaps those who feel threatened will make the decision that they truly want to and not the one that their party wants them to. Although it may lead to spoiled votes or cheating? I just hope it goes off without any glitches. Its crazy how roads are being closed and the protests have begun.

Nikita  said:

I was also shocked to read that the secret vote was allowed! That is hopefully a step in the right direction. I think that the only people who will not use this opportunity to vote Zuma out would be those that are in his pocket. I really cant say who I think will be the next best option though within the ANC to lead us. In my opinion the one is just as corrupt as the other.

Henrietta  said:

I hope for a positive outcome but I don't think the ANC will vote against the President Zuma. They have too much to lose. But I will say that after all this I really hope the next election in 2019 people will vote with their minds open and remember that the promises made before the elections is just sweet talks, to get people to vote for them.

Alexis  said:
on Tuesday 08-Aug-17 08:26 AM
Very difficult to say unfortunately. I am hoping though that they make the right decision - and of course there is protesting today - just hoping it does not get violent

patrick  said:

It is a hard one to predict. there are a lot of dynamics involved on this one.i think the motion will carry.

Mathilda  said:

I’m all for Jacob Zuma to step down and I hope we succeed

If we succeed in the no confidence vote against Zuma the speaker will be the "Care taker" in due time a new President gets elected usually within 30 days
But this could actually cause further damage and create a worse scenario
I can just imagen how the Rand will drop even more , I mean investors do not like a temporary government that their own people have no confidence in

And also this is not the best outcome for the other parties because they know that as long as Zuma is there they rake in more votes for the 2019 elections

Natasha   said:

I'm surprised that the vote is secret I would like to know what is going on in there at the moment. I actually think a lot of ANC members is going to vote against Zuma he must fall and I think he is going to fall.

Today is a significant day in South Africa!! We may see an end to the corrupt reign that is Zuma but it comes with significant ramifications. It will mean an entire cabinet reshuffle within 30 days! I do hope that all MP's vote with their conscience. #Zumamustfall!

Michelle  said:

It’s not easy to predict something like this. I look forward to hear what the results of today will be after the secret vote. Maybe someday things will go better in South Africa. Let’s just hope for the best though.

Bianca R  said:

I was extremely surprised to hear that a secret vote will be allowed, it has to make one wonder whether there is any kind of ulterior motive in allowing this to happen. What is happening behind the scenes and what don't we know? I certainly just hope that our country will be in a better position given the result that most are waiting for. National shutdowns have already started this morning and a lot of people are struggling to make their way around the cities and to work, I guess we are all just hoping for a positive outcome going forward.

david  said:

i hope he survives. it is the best thing for all the opposition parties. in fact, if i was mmusi i would instruct the DA to vote to keep JZ783... things will only change, when we have another government, and JZ783's staying in power shows everyone that the only thing the ANC care about is themselves.

Jadine E  said:

I would so about 49% no confidence...But if backed by all the other political parties should be a landslide, I hope.
