A great American eclipse

Eclipses don’t come around often and so there is a lot of noise being made about the eclipse that is going to happen in North America crossing Oregon at 10.21am pacific time on 21 August 2017.  That will be 7.21pm our time in South Africa, although the eclipse will begin at approximately 6pm South African time and finish at approximately 9pm.  Obviously, during that time the day will progress from sunlight to complete darkness, or almost complete darkness and then back eventually to sunlight again – something quite dramatic.  NASA will have live-streaming video of the total solar eclipse and they have even set up a website just for the eclipse.  One of course can travel to Oregon, just below Washington State (remember that Washington D.C. and Washington State are two entirely different places) and you can see that website at https://eclipse2017.nasa.gov.

There is not going to be another eclipse like this for a long time, and so it is going to be a major media event later today. Remember, for those of you who don’t, that an eclipse is caused when the moon completely covers the sun and at certain points, and this time it is on a route from South Carolina to Oregon, across America, you will get a total eclipse and then other places, let’s say 400km away, will get a 92% eclipse and the further away they get from it, the less of an eclipse they will have.  Ancient Chinese history describes these eclipses as the sun being eaten away, which they thought has been eaten away by dragons and some of the emperor’s astronomers who failed to predict the eclipse were apparently beheaded for this “mistake”!

I have never seen one. hope it was spectacular. i remember we had the ring around the sun here in SA the one time. blinding but beautiful. but i must say there is nothing more stunning then a red moon or a blood moon as some would call it

I heard on the news that there were many rooftop parties and events taking place to make the most of this eclipse. It must have been a great and memorable atmosphere.

Complete different things seeing in real life than photos/tv. Astronomy is definitely fascinating but so complicated and alot to remember all the terms and meanings! As for dragons and the Chinese history and beliefs... well thats for another blog.

I saw a couple of photos of this one. Looked amazing. Always a rare thing to experience. I remember my parents waking us up during the night to witness an eclipse.

I was glued to SkyNews watching the eclipse, it was beautiful to watch and just wish I could have seen it personally! I did however have a chuckle watching Donald Trump without any form of protective glasses, staring at the eclipse - LOL. I did manage to see the eclipse two or three weeks ago that we had.

We all get excited about eclipses as they are pretty rare. I don't think the hype was as big as the hype is for the Mayweather & McGregor fight that's happening this coming weekend though. Funny how certain eclipses can be seen in certain countries better than others. It makes sense! It's extremely fascinating though...

I have always been fascinated by an eclipse. I have heard on the radio the hype around it, the various roof top pubs, restaurants, etc open for the event and supplying the relevant glasses to wear. I would love to be there, caught in the vibe, etc. I LOVE events where people get together for a common cause and share in the spirit of things. Enjoy.

I read all the Traditional beliefs and myths about an eclipse the other day and some of the things are quit ridiculous for example if you watch an eclipse during your pregnancy, it can be harmful to your baby
Sorry if I ruined it for all the pregnant ladies lol

Going to definitely take a look out for the eclipse tonight. Did not know that it affected animals, however I am not surprised. Not too sure how much will be seen on our side, regardless - will be quite something

I will look out myself just after 6 pm, but I do not think we will be able to see here in South Africa much. But website is the great idea to see how the sky looks like in America. Thank you Michael for your blog, I would probably only find out about this event watching CNN tonight.

its quite an event especially because is complete. of interest is that it makes animals like dogs behave unusual. Nasa has a every right to make it a big news story. is an opportunity of a life time.

I have heard that this 'Dark Moon' makes animals behave differently - it is very interesting to see how the phases of the moon have such an effect on wildlife. I cannot wait to see this historical event unfold. FYI - It is safe to view a full eclipse, totality, with the naked eye.
