Bottled water is not as safe as you think

I read an interesting article in a magazine called “What doctors don’t tell you” all about the water industry.  I think by now most people know, and I do hope that you know, that buying water in a plastic bottle is generally a bad idea.  Almost all bottles, even if they don’t use BPA plastic, which has been linked to cancer, generally have plastics that also pose cancer threats.  You certainly are not doing yourself a favour if you drink water out of a plastic bottle and the sooner we all stop buying water in plastic bottles the sooner the manufacturers will move on to healthier options.

What I also found interesting was how much water is wasted to produce the water that is bottled.  It takes approximately three times the amount of water as is in the bottle during the manufacturing process, to fill the bottle.  Two hundred billion plastic bottles sold around the world annually end up in landfills or the oceans and they eventually break down and pollute our water supply even more.  They say that most of the vitamin water contains sugar or artificial sugars like Aspartane, which has been linked to neurological dysfunction.

I am one of those people that generally does not have a problem drinking tap water, but I know that a lot of people are terrified of tap water saying that ultimately lawn chemicals, industrial waste, fertility drugs, anti-depressants and antibiotics all find their way into our water supplies and some of those chemicals still remain.  I am not quite sure what the solution is, unless you live right next to a natural spring and can get all of your water there?

I have friends that will only drink bottled water and refuse to put their mouth to tap water. Unless you live in a country/area where the water has been declared unfit for drinking purposes, I personally don't have a problem drinking water from the tap - so far so good. When I was in Egypt we were not even allowed to brush our teeth using the tap water. No water was placed on the tables every sip of water you had, had to be bought. It was scorching hot at the time I went so you would automatically drink a lot more water. I couldn't wait to get home so that I could open the tap and drink the water from it. A commodity you don't add value to as you should until it is taken away.

I recently saw an advert for a programme that will air soon on Sky News about the dangers of plastic being dumped in our oceans. It is actually appalling what this plastic is doing to marine creatures and our oceans and this should be enough to persuade anyone to stop drinking water or any other beverage from plastic bottles.

I was always taught in Ukraine that drinking the tap water is not save and we have to buy water from the shops or get it from the underground, we have few stations in the city where we still have to pay for this water too. When I arrived to South Africa I was very surprised to drink water from tap!! It is a luxury people have here! And so many people do not appreciate it!!!

I have heard about articles like this, it is very interesting. I have personally never had any issues with drinking tap water, I am also not one for plastic bottles because of all the dangers surrounding the use of it. Sometimes the simple way is the best way!

Tap water for the win! I have no issues with drinking water from the tap. We are fortunate enough to live in a Rand Water area.

Yes I've read about this too. But also, anything you do can trigger any illness. I'm sure we humans still have a lot to learn about what things trigger what illnesses.

I have to say, I love water. Tap water doesn't bother me at all. I drink liters a day. We have cleaner water than a lot of countries. every now and then I do buy bottled water on the road or so.

im sure the tap water we drink is also harmfull. also water does expire. so who tests the bottled water. and is the cap save. one can be a germafobe but at the end of the day our bodies deal with lots of invaders on a daily base. hence we have anti bodies and an immune system.

I also used to buy bottled water when travelling but have since read that it could be dangerous especially when using the same bottle continuously, so I now use a glass bottle instead. I do suspect though that glass bottles would also have some disadvantages.

its quote clear that most of the aliments which are common amongst humanity are cause by humanity. Water is something that should not be sold. it should be made available to us for free. Springs are also getting fewer because of lack of rain. every second weekend I get my water from a natural spring somewhere in Magalies but some days the water is salty. pollution pollution.

I only drink bottled water and I buy a new sealed bottle for every day of the week. I suppose it is like everything, there is always something that is bad for you/not great to be ingesting. Apparently we have one of the cleanest drinking waters in the world, for me it is just a little bit of a headache filling the same bottle over and over again.

We use to live on a farm and we never had problems with water the taste was so much different than town water. It’s actually scary to think that water can taste so different just makes you think what the people are putting in the water to clean it. It's ridiculous if you go eat somewhere and you have to pay R15 for bottle water I will always drink tap water with some lemon and ice and it taste just like bottle water. I think it’s more about the image than anything else.

I have this ugly habit of sometimes reusing plastic bottles and filling it with water when I don't have another bottle despite my knowledge. I do have glass bottle but after a while it starts to smell weird, despite how many times I wash it or soak it. I agree with Tamaryn, the alternative is to have a water filter at home.

Tamaryn  said:

I'm happy to drink our tap water and always do at home. When I'm on the go it's easiest to grab a bottled water though! I think the solution may be a water filter at home (if you are not the type to drink tap water) and then being diligent enough to fill glass bottles each day.

I will never be able to go without water. I do not really mind to drink it from the tap or bottles, it doesn't matter. Most of the stuff we put into our mouths these days aren`t very healthy.

I don't particularly like the idea of drinking water bottled in plastic bottles however its the most convenient when you are out and about. I don't want to harm my body or the Planet but most times I just stop the garage and get everything I need and this is what is on offer. I have no issue with drinking tap water when I am at the office or at home.

I really don't mind drinking water out of the tap I usually always do anyway but i still like my water to be cold, that is why I have six different glass bottles at home for water. I also keep one on my desk. Regarding the plastic bottles I will always choose glass over plastic when buying water I would rather buy the one in a glass bottle as I can reuse the bottle.

Unfortunately I am one of those that cannot drink water from a tap. I always buy bottled water, even though we are fortunate enough to actually have drinkable water unlike other countries. It's something that i just cannot overcome!

We only drink water at home. Be it soda water, tap water or bought water. I was lucky enough to grow up on a farm so we only had natural spring water coming out of our taps. I drink tap water everyday and I am very grateful for the quality of water we have in this country. I will have to switch to glass bottles though rather than the plastic bottles I have gathered on my desk.

I do not do much bottled water as i do not feel that it is any better than normal tap water. I will on occasion buy a pump as they are quite nice. People I think should look at getting a borehole - think that may be a lot healthier

There was an interesting clipping once on Carte Blanche which showed that South African tap water is still one of the best there is. I have never had a problem drinking tap water either and, in fact, found it very difficult when I was in North Africa getting used too even having to brush teeth with bottled water. I find bottled water a money making racket. As long as our water is safe to drink, I will be taking it from the tap thanks.

Clare  said:

I must say I do drink bottle water but most of the time is the Bottle that I have gotten from the shop and putting my own water in it. Either way all water isn't so health, if you see what comes out of the taps its also scary.

Natasha   said:

I think its going to take a lot to tell people to stop buying plastic water bottles. Its convenient to stop at the shop grab a bottle of water and go. Maybe they should start selling water in glass bottles but I only think that ,that will only happen like in 2030 maybe.

I've always known about how bad plastic bottles are and since then I've bought a couple of glass bottles we use in our home. I use to be scared of drinking tap water but I'm not anymore. Like Jessica A says we should be proud of the water coming out of our taps.

Jessica Apfel   said:

South Africa should be proud of the water within our taps, if I am not mistaken we are ranked third in the world. We should make a conscience effort to make use of glass bottles - this is only one example of how human beings are destroying the environment and leaving their carbon foot print felt! At the very least we should encourage recycling.

Celeste  said:
