Who would you most like to meet?

We all have our idols and people who we want to meet.  I’d love to know who those are for you – and maybe even why.

For me when I was young it was Sebastian Coe, the 800m track world record holder at the time.  Since I was about 20 though it was Nelson Mandela and Tiger Woods.  Two totally different characters, both of whom need no introduction to anyone.  I am always cross with myself that I didn’t make more of an effort to write letters and make more effort to meet Nelson Mandela and have my picture taken with him.  Maybe it wouldn’t have happened but I did not try hard enough.  I saw him a few times in person and on one occasion, at the Wanderers Cricket stadium I climbed up a fence, reached over and shook his hand.  He had big hands, much bigger than mine and gave me a handshake.  Something I won’t ever forget, but I would have liked to speak to him and spend a few minutes with him at sometime in his life.  All of us South African were so blessed to have him.

Tiger Woods is the richest, most successful sports person, as well as golfer in the history of the world so far.  Nobody has ever attracted as much media attention as he, as much sponsorship money and even today, if he is shown on TV the audiences spike.  It doesn’t matter how well he is playing, despite all his injuries and operations, if he plays the “Tiger Woods Effect” occurs and viewership of a channel increases about 50% which is huge.  Whatever one may think of him, no other sports person has ever had that effect.

I would love to meet Margaret Atwood, her books have always blown me away not only because of the way she writes and formulates her sentences but also because of how relevant they are to today's challenges and social injustices. Her last book, however disappointed me somewhat and I would love to chat to her about her reasoning behind the book.

When I was young I idolized so many famous people, from Hollywood stars to famous athletes etc - but now none of that really matters to me. If I'm going to meet someone, I will like it to a mentor worthy of his/her stature, someone that wants me to succeed and will pass on their hard-won knowledge, actively supporting me with words and action so that I can become the person I want to become

I have had the privilege of meeting Justice Edwin Cameron and he is truly an inspiration. He is HIV positive and has played such a prominent role in changing the negative perceptions associated with people who are positive. He was also such a big role player in securing gay marriage rights. He is a great man and a true beacon within the judicial system. Next, I would love to have a conversation with Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng.

I would really love to meet 2 people. Pastor Steven Futrick - To me he really is an amazing pastor that gives one hope and really does bring you closer to God. I love his services on TV and internet. Then I would also love to meet Richard Brandson, he has thee best outlook at life that I have ever seen, from being a nothing to someone so successful without all the qualifications. I think he would be able to give a few people good tips on how to become successful.

If I had the opportunity to meet someone it would be Oprah Winfrey. Despite her past and the fact that she was sexually abused, she has become one of the richest woman and also extremely benevolent. I enjoyed reading about how she picked her life up when all seemed hopelessly lost. So yes, Oprah Winfrey and also Nelson Mandela would be on my list.

I actually have a very long list of people that I will like to meet. It will be very difficult to choose just one. But I also heard that role models sometimes are completely two different people in person and then in front of cameras etc. But my all-time favorite are Juan Boucher that I`ve met a few times. And then also Karlien van Jaarsveld, I`ve been to one of her shows before but never met her in person. Sometimes we must remember that they are also normal people just like us, only with more money.

I would love to have met Marilyn Monroe. I have endless questions I'd love to ask her. I really admire her, she grew up in foster homes yet she made it based on her own efforts and charms. She made a lot of mistakes and had a hard life but she accomplished a lot in her short time before she died at the age of 36.

I would say what most people I think would say is Nelson Mandela. He did visit my primary school at atime - Rosebank Primary but I didn't get to actually meet him. I would have liked to meet Princess Diana - which would have in any case been impossible lol. I would like to meet Lionel Messi as he is like the best soccer player of all time! My South African pick would also be Penny Heyns - I grew up swimming and looked up to her. She is the best breastroke female swimmer in our history. She was the first female to win both the 100 and 200 meter breaststroke event in 1996 and broke a total of 14 individual world records. Charlize Theron would also be high up on my list - although she doesn't seem interesting for some reason. I would like to meet DJ Blackcoffee - I enjoy his music and he is really just doing it for himself - disability and all! There are probably a couple of more people but I can't think of them all now.

I would love to have met Wayne Dyer, but unfortunately he passed away recently. His books and writings still live on though. Another is Oscar Wilde - I think he was a literary genius and centuries ahead of his time, and just an all-round interesting character!! And then for whatever reason, I've always wanted to meet Larry King. Perhaps I will still get that chance.

I have a few people I would love to meet - Richie McCaw, Dan Carter, Beuden Barett and practically the entire All Black rugby team, would just make my world! I am an insane rugby fan and in particular, a huge All Black fan! I just admire their absolute talent in the game and they really are one of a kind when it comes to playing the game. I just watch them play and it all seems so natural and easy. Not to mention their huge involvement in charities world wide. Although Dan Carter has made his mistakes in his personal life, he will to me always be the greatest fly half to have ever played the game. On other note, I also would have loved to meet Chester Bennington, the band's music was so influential in my teenage years and continues to be in my adult life, sometimes music just speaks to you and your life, that's what it is for me.
