Semigration to the Western Cape

There has been a tremendous move with people from Johannesburg and Durban moving into the Western Cape in recent years.  In fact, the move has been so dramatic that high-end properties in Gauteng have for a number of years not really been going up, whereas in the Cape sales have been booming.  The Cape has its own problems including severe water shortages and the prices there are beginning to price people out of the market as well, but there is no doubt, if nothing else, that the Cape is the place where people with money ultimately retire.  All sorts of middle-class people are also being drawn to the Cape for a variety of reasons including the fact that it is a very well managed Province and Cape Town in particular as one of the best managed cities in South Africa.  That is apart from the natural beauty of the Cape.  I love the Cape and in fact all of my racehorses, apart from Master Sabina, are now based with my trainers in the Cape, the Snaith’s, and I love to find any excuse to go to Cape Town.

A lot of the sales are in areas like Rondebosch, Claremont, Plumstead and Wineberg in the R2,5 million price range.  Finally, here is the price growth – the Western Cape prices have grown 53,7% over the last 5 years and Gauteng has grown 24,7%.  In other words, the Cape is growing twice as fast as Gauteng.  I think though, before this move becomes a stampede, it is going to require one or two big companies like Discovery for example to announce a head office or a big move of say 5,000 or 6,000 staff, etc and until then, the Cape is going to struggle with actually having the jobs to provide to all of the people that are trying to move there at the moment.  It doesn’t have the major companies and that’s what is missing from its future growth.

Talking out of experience now. When I lived in Cape Town I immediately got work but it wasn't the salary that I got in Jhb. It's the most beautiful place but i'll never go back. It's a very expensive place to stay aswell.

I've also seen how many people is moving to Cape Town but the it seem in the same sense they do not last long because of employment I would also say companies must open up branches in Cape.

Ideally I would like to be in Cape Town but I don't think one would be able to enjoy the City fully when you are earning a CPT salary. Everything in Cape Town is expensive and to be able to participate in all that CPT has to offer one needs a Jhb salary. For now ill keep CPT for December.

Maybe when you retire then Cape Town will be the best place but for now Johannesburg is the place for work.

If we had the opportunity, I would move to Cape Town or Durban. Obviously not to Cape Town right now with their water problems and restrictions but it always crosses my mind. There seems to be much more you can do in Cape Town and Durban then what you can in Johannesburg. Johannesburg seems like a place you just find employment in, there isn't much you can do in Johannesburg for pleasure. Cape Town and Durban, you can do things without spending an arm and leg.

My family are from the Cape, The Strand and Durbanville to be exact. I love the Cape but as a holiday destination. I love to know that when I want a break from the hustle and bustle, which I absolutely love about Gauteng, I have the quiet, laidback life of the Cape. Would I want to live in the Cape, no - certainly not yet at least.

It's such a beautiful place and one that I won’t mind to move to either. My best friend moved to Cape Town took a huge pay deduction and still won't look back, she loves it there and has told me on numerous occasions she never regrets the move nor will she ever move back. For me Cape Town is a very expensive country and to get work there is quite hard, they first look after their own people before hiring others. It's not surprising that everyone want to move to Cape Town.

Cape Town is absolutely stunning, I think everyone in Gauteng thinks about moving to Cape Town every now and again, I would not mind to move to Cape Town, the weather is just horrible there sometimes.

I love the Cape, but also think that I would rather stay in Johannesburg and only move once I retire. I think Cape Town is a great place to live because of how well managed and beautiful it is, but I think that once you start living there, you get used to the beautiful scenery and don't appreciate it as much.

I’ve never been to the Cape and I always wanted to go there. It’s a place I will like to visit soon. If a town (country) is well managed, then people will look after the place. And also if you pay more than usual, you will always have more respect for stuff than just by receiving it.

I always wanted to move to Cape Town, but with the water shortage and also the jobs, I think I would rather stay in Johannesburg.

As beautiful as it may be....I think that I would rather stay up here. I prefer the fast pace of JHB and when retiring - somewhere else for def. As far as I know, CPT is very clicky and not very friendly (I know peeps will argue) - but hey. Suppose all are following the DA and looking a for a better life without leaving the country as most have already done and more are bound to do in the near future

I would love to move to Cape Town if I could afford to live in Clifton - so definitely a retirement type province. The salary difference is so huge so it would be nice if bigger companies started moving there, but they would need to steal their Johannesburg staff if they want anything done. Everyone is far too laid back there and it is crazy how annoying that can get. I sure hope that the water crisis turns around so that we can continue going on vacation there. I would not blink an eye if I was offered a job there with a Johannesburg type salary.

I love cape town. I went to Cape Town about 3 Year ago and i loved it there.Cape town really does cater for all types of people. I would love to live in Cape Town but i do agree with Clare my biggest fear is an Tsunami.

I absolutely love Cape Town and it really is my favourite place in the country. I too, know of many people that have moved to Cape Town from Gauteng and they simply do not look back. Having some big name companies open up offices in the Cape, would be really cool but we would then again be losing more people to the mountain. I really do believe though that most people do move because of how the province is run, there is such a monumental difference and people are tired of watching Gauteng go down.

I love cape town, many people from Johannesburg have vacated to Cape Town instead of going overseas- like Thailand or a country with a good exchange rate to the rand. Cape town really does cater for all types of people, those who enjoy the outdoors, others who are socialites as well as those who just want to relax and look at the view. I completely agree that there are not enough job opportunities in cape town. However, if there were then joburg would no longer be attractive to live and work in.

I love Cape Town and would love to go the for a vacation and see all the beauty of the Cape, but then again I wont stay the for more done three days because Cape Town has four seasons in one day.

I must say that I love Cape Town, in theory I would love to live there but in its current state I wouldn't. Cape Town is truly beautiful but super over priced and from what I have heard their pay isn't that great. But theoretically it would be amazing!

I do agree that the Cape is a truly beautiful place, with so many hidden gems - however, if one is to go there with the intention of retiring, I personaly would not want to move to a place that is growing exponentially and is becoming excessively over-priced! Moreover, the current Mayor is sorrounded with a lot of controversy about corruption and wasteful spenditure?

With the water shortages not getting any better in recent days, I think Cape Town might start experiencing the opposite of their population growth.

Reason why Cape Town in particular as one of the best managed cities in South Africa is because the Cape is being run by the DA. However all your Facts are perfect but I wouldn't move near any ocean due to the high possibilities of Tsunami.

Cape Town is a beautiful place to go on holiday, but will not live there with all the water problems going on, it's just going to get worse.

I just love Cape Town, it’s beautiful the people are friendly and I just like the vibe and feel it gives me when I’m there
Even though it’s fabulous I will never move to Cape Town reasons:
- Its overcrowded (in my opinion)
- Very expensive
-More of a Holiday destination
-no work opportunities

I am really shock to read that people still want to live there with the water problem happening there. Cape Town is a beautiful place.

cape town is like switzerland, both only look good in photos. in reality, the sea is too cold to swim in, the wind never stops blowing, and it rains in winter. rain in winter, that's just stupid.
