Favourite holiday destinations in South Africa

Obviously, some of you who go through my blog travel and travel quite a bit internationally, but I wanted to confine this blog to your favourite holiday destinations in South Africa.  It does not necessarily have to be the beauty of Cape Town or the relaxation of a camp within the Kruger Park (some of the finest value for money holidays that you could ever have).  Maybe it is just a beach house somewhere along a more deserted piece of the coast, etc.  I want to know from you what your favourite holiday spots in South Africa are?

From my perspective, and we did not have much money when I grew up and we used to go on a lot of caravan holidays, which I have to tell you, from a teenage point of view, are probably about the best holidays you can go on.  There are a lot of teenagers in caravan parks, it is a pretty good way to meet quite a few people and it is lots of fun.  I did not enjoy having to wash dishes after braais and the skottel always takes a lot of effort to clean properly, but I have really fond memories of three week holidays by various beaches on the Natal South Coast – and we generally avoided the two busy places and went further away from the big cities - as well as many in the mountains.

I guess I tried to look for similar holiday spots for my children – alternating between the mountains, which I love, because quite a few of the holidays when I was around 10 to 13 years old were spent in the Drakensberg Mountains and beach holidays.  Insofar as saving money is concerned, beach holidays are probably the best way to go, because honestly, you give children a little bit of sand and sea and that is them taken care of for 10 or 12 hours.  They do of course have risks, and I recall on one particular day at Umhlanga Rocks seeing two bodies of what I understood to be children aged about 12 years old covered with the silver foil wrappings after they had fallen off rocks, knocked themselves unconscious and drowned, but you are probably equally at risk of being bitten by snakes in the mountains, so you cannot completely avoid risk either.  Not to mention, statistically of course, that every time your children are driving in your car with you, you are probably more at danger than being at the seaside with them.  What are your favourite holiday destinations?  It does not necessarily have to be a specific named place, but it can be a general type of holiday.

I would go to Cape Town any day! Only problem is the distance... The drive is pure hell. And flights are always so expensive...
Another destination I love is Knysna. My parents have a house up the road from Pezula Golf Course: Ocean view and walking distance to the beach and back. It's a quiet town and there's not much to do but it is relaxing. My parents actually always said that they would move there after retirement

I love camping so my best holiday is near a dam. I've been to Cape town, KZN and nothing beats the dam I think a person relax more there then at a famous holiday destination.

I am not really an outdoors kind of person but I do enjoy a holiday that is packed with adventure and also a lot of downtime. I really enjoy going to nature reserves and the waterfalls around the Graskop area in Mpumalanga are always a favourite go to spot!

I did travel a lot, but I can say that South Africa is the most beautiful country to visit. This December we drove to Jeffrey's Bay and I loved this place so much, it was very busy though, lots of teenagers and even organized games with load music on the beach front. I think we all loved it so much.

I love alternating destinations, one year we'll go to the bushveld and then Cape Town and then South Coast. We were lucky enough to go to Zimbali in Ballito in December and it probably was my favorite holiday as an adult. The pools, the beach, the setup, everything was just so convenient and my little one had the time of his life. We are going to Lesotho later this year and I am very excited as this will be my first snowy holiday experience.

Margate used to be my favorite place to go on holiday but that was years ago. I have not had a holiday for a very long time so I wouldn't know what is preferable now. I think I am going to make it my goal to go away this year somewhere...

I love warm "swimming" weather, where you can laze around in the sun all day and on the beach, therefore I like family holidays to places like Umhlanga. I must say that I also really enjoyed the Kruger National Park when I was there late last year and could get used to the idea of camping, it is a different kind of peaceful nature to experience.

I have to agree with you about camping. As children we were a huge family and we always were allowed to take a friend each. Therefore, camping/caravanning was the way to go. We used to go to Langebaan, a lagoon just outside Saldanha in the Western Cape. My parents believed the moment you get into the car, the holiday started, so we would stop off at places on the way and enjoy the area, Oudtshoor were we went to the Cango Caves, Ostrich farm and rode ostriches, etc. These holidays were the best. The innocent night life for the young on the beaches those years was also amazing. I loved my childhood and have nothing but fond memories of our holidays.

I must say that one of my best holidays is when we went down to Knysna but have enjoyed going to Pongolo once or twice (the drive however sucked). I enjoy being outdoors and being in the wild

I always love to talk about holidays because; it’s bringing up the most wonderful memories. Usually we visit the coast. I will always love going to the beach because there is just so much more to do. Even the sun is better and then of course the ocean and all the sand for the children. I love the vibe at the coast with all the families, everyone is just so happy and you hear laughter everywhere. And then again it’s also nice to go to Sabie and the Kruger National Park`s side, but I like to visit there only for a long weekend or so, not longer than that.

I have a lot of fun memories of holidays spent with my family even trips to the Vaal dam. But in so far the holiday destination I enjoyed the most was Kruger National Park. There is just something about being in the bush camping and bonfires and nature all around you. You somehow forget about your busy life in the city and things that needs to be done etc. also the best time to go is autumn/winter when it’s not so hot. Cape town and Jeffrey’s Bay will be my second favourite.

I have to say there is so many of SA I would still like to go. But a place that is always in my heart is Kruger National Park. I have been there more times I can count. Just to be there in that tranquility in real nature. However the coast is also a different type of beautiful. Hard to choose just one favorite.

Cape Town for the win - It can end up being expensive or you could just beach away and make it a cheap type holiday. I can never get enough of the ocean and a bonus is that there are a lot of "free things" to do there and sights to see. Something about its natural beauty. I also enjoyed a holiday I went with my family through the Garden route - it was the longest drive ever but it was incredible. Stopping in all the towns was such a treat.

I love the beach and for me the more tropical and lush it is, the better. I prefer the vegetation and warm sea of the North and South Coasts over the Western Cape's cold waters and windy days. I do enjoy the sights and sounds of the bushveld too though!

When I was very young we used to spend every holiday in Graskop with my dad's friend. He had a house over there and it was really a very quiet and relaxing place. I remember being taken on motorbike rides and walking a lot through dense areas and just really enjoying nature, at it's best. I have extremely fond memories of these trips and wish it was something we could still do.

The Transkei is my favourite holiday destination in South Africa. Cintsa Bay is an amazing escape and is fantastically conserved. The sea life is extensive and the beaches are clean and free from the pollution you would find further north.

In terms of coastal destinations...and for me a holiday has to be by the coast >My only local holiday destination is Cape Town. There is a reason it is the Tourist hub of South Africa. Cape Town feels less like South Africa then the rest of South Africa, especially when it is peak season and you have all the foreigners around. I am originally from KZN so I try to avoid that place at all costs and only return when I have no other option. PE is far too windy to enjoy oneself and in my experience after one trip down there its enough for a lifetime. More remote areas driving up along the coast are novel for a day or two but for me it is Cape Town all the way.

My favorite holiday was when I went to Drakensburg, a few years ago. Everyday we went hiking on different mountains, we swam in natural made pools. It was stunning! I do love going to beaches however I don't enjoy it when its over crowed.

The beach has such a tranquil feel and it just puts your mind at ease, hearing the crashing waves and then they slowly retreat. Knysna is ideal for that sound personally.

I am a very big fan of Cape Town in general. Every time I am there I am just amazed at the beauty of the place, and obviously there is so much to do. I enjoy both the more popular busy areas, as well as the quiet places where you find less tourists.

My Holiday destination is the Vaal Dame, I love Fishing and so does my Family, I feel so free there when we pitch up our tent and I cook on the skottle, watch my son make mud pies and we swim by the pool.

I am not a beach goer and really dislike the over-crowded hot sand during the December time - My favourite holiday spot thus far has been Afriski Lesotho, and although not in SA, it is a mere 5 hours drive to a snow-filled paradise, with some of the most tremendous and breath taking views! The costs are fairly reasonable and it is an experience of a lifetime! Highly recommended.

Any place where you can spend quality time with your family, is a good spot but it would have to be Umhlanga as much as it in KZN it is such a peaceful place to just enjoy nature and quality time with the family.
