Self-driving cars

The home of self-driving cars at the moment appears to be California which of course is also the home of Tesla and Elon Musk.  Everybody is obviously nervous about what is going to happen when the computers get it wrong, as inevitably they must do a little bit at the beginning.  People will sensationalise any deaths from autonomous driving cars, and already have, and no mention will be given to all the accidents that may have been avoided.  Getting officials and departments for testing is obviously extremely difficult with people being nervous about how these things will go and so it is with some interest that I read that California’s Department of Motor Vehicles is giving out permits to companies that will allow them to test autonomous cars from yesterday, 2 April.  The future is coming much quicker than we all think!

If self driven cars can avoid accidents I would get in on and especially when you drive far for holiday then you can sit and relax.

I would give a chance to one of those cars. Very interesting to see how are they operate.
Today Technology and artificial mind is improving everyday.

Technology is definitely improving, but safety is the main concern. This vehicle is the next step towards the future, but definitely not something I would consider trying.

I wish we could get self-driving cars here like yesterday - this would surely stop the road carnage we have. When I see how our taxi drivers break the law on the roads on a daily basis, the self-driving car will be a Godsend. I would then definitely get a scooter for work, will bring down my petrol money and be safer than it is now. I say up the self-driven car.

I think it is amazing how technology is improving, and it also reminds me a lot of robots taking over in the future. I can just imagine how awesome it must be to drive to Cape Town but not doing the driving yourself. Even getting in a car driving yourself is a risk so can relying on a computer driving your car be a risk, but I certainly would not mind giving it a try.

I think it would be very interesting to see how this works. Would these cars be able to deal with the complications of driving, such as avoiding pedestrians or taking evasive action? One can only wait and see what the outcome will be.

Can you just imagine how these cars will react to vendors and beggars? ='''D Will it move to avoid them? Do you then have to put it into manual drive so that you can navigate how to avoid these people?
I have trust issues and there ain't no way no how I will trust a computer... LOL

I don't really trust those self driving cars, with the way people drive these days .

I believe that the margin of human error will always far outweigh the margin of error by a computer. That being said, I know that people are notoriously reluctant to give up their personal power or control over something that has basically become second nature.

Self driving cars always remind me of i-Robot - I mean if you could work out a system - unless something tragic happens like in the movie, the roads would be a safer place. And imagine for the people whom cannot drive - how it would make life easier in a sense...but i suppose not quite as I am sure you will have to self drive at one point

Right now however, I do not see it as being very safe - as there will be no quick thinking if and when something occrs and you have to swerve out of the way or something

I think these kind of motor vehicles are scary. And think that maybe this system of self-driving cars might work in South Africa only if there are special roads reserved only for these kind of cars

When I sit in traffic I often day dream of what it would be like to have a self- driving car! I know when it actually comes to trying it out or testing it I would be a bit more reluctant. It is interesting to know how fast this projecting is developing!

Ashleigh  said:

I don't trust it. I will stick to controlling the vehicle myself thank you. Especially here in South Africa.

Zindy  said:

I am very curious about the concept of trusting a computer to drive me around however maybe if our country was stricter with certain laws it would be different however we have people running across roads when they want we don't have laws such as jay walking like over seas people don't really care here that's why so many pedestrians get knocked because of taking chances. How would a vehicle like this pick up in a very busy city with everything basically moving around from all directions what is safe and not where as you can look around and see what is happening.

Tersia  said:

I don't think self-driving cars will ever work in South Africa. In countries where people actually take the rules of the road seriously and are punished if you do violate the rules it will work better. My sisters that are in New Zealand have told me that people over there don't drive over the speed limit and follow the rules to the T. If you need to merge from one road to the highway, it will work one car, one car and the traffic then flows. Not like here where people push in front of you. Luckily I am here because I don't think I will ever trust something like that. I am to much of a control freak LOL.

Nikita  said:

I am not sure if I could use a car that drives itself especially not on South African roads. You basically have to do defensive driving everyday. How would this robot car know that a Taxi is just about to push into your lane with no warning whatsoever?

This may seem like a scary concept to most people, having self driving cars out of our control. But the truth is that person operated cars are extremely dangerous! The fact that a self driven car killed a pedestrian is scary, but this shouldn't detract from the fact that numerous pedestrians are hit by person controlled cars every day. It's going to take some time to perfect the self driving car, but I think that once it has been perfected the roads will be a much safer place.

This will be a No thanks from my side as well as Bianca mentioned an Uber self-driving car knocked over and killed a pedestrian
So how will it not crash into other cars?

I have been won over by self-driving vehicles. The margin for error is far less than with that of humans. Although, I do have a few concerns such as who is held liable when a collision does occur and to what extent would they be held liable. What does a "driver" need to "operate" this vehicle? A driving license or nothing at all? Can a person be intoxicated and instruct a vehicle to take them somewhere and be free of any liability in the event that something does occur. It is a lot to process but I am open to the idea.

Michelle  said:

This will definitely not be a good idea for South Africa drivers. We have too many accidents happening, imagen when a car must be self-driven. I will never trust a system like this with my life or to transport the people I love. But yes I agree the future technology is surely coming faster than we thought.

One of these Uber self-driving cars knocked over and killed a pedestrian on 19 March 2018, another story which received very little coverage! I am sticking to my 'no thanks approach' on this one. A pedestrian has lost their life and this was caused by what is supposed to be a perfect system. How many more people will get injured and die before we consider leaving this alone?

Thabitha  said:

Brenda Du Toit   said:

I think the future is fast approaching us. I think its going to be scary driving a car that drives it self Imagen you drive and you see a car is going to skip a robot and the cars machine stops `working all of a sudden lol. No its okay i don't think that i trust it but it will be convenient when you go out and party then you don't have to be like i cant drink because you are driving.

I have commented on this before and stick to my guns. I do not think that I would like to be in a self-driven car. I like to think of myself as tech-savy but self driven vehicle there is far too many things that could go wrong. We see it with everything else - our cell phones, tv, pcs etc. Besides that I don't think our citizens could afford it any time soon.

Fikile  said:

i don't think it will work in South Africa simple because it will get lost in most areas. plus who will want to buy a car that will drive it's self cause most people love to drive themselves anywhere they want so having a car to drive it's self, it's not going to work

When I was younger and I imagined the year 2010 I pictured a world with extremely advanced technology! with holograms and floating cars etc- much to my disappointment it hasn't happened. However with the self driving cars up and coming we are definitely getting their slowly.

I think the reasoning and idea behind having a self-driven vehicle is interesting as these vehicles are designed to obey speed limits and road signs. I think I'd be most nervous when the vehicle turns corners or needs to stop at traffic lights, can the system predict when the traffic light is changing and how far the curb is...

Bianca N  said:

Not being in control of my car would be nerve wrecking for me. I am a nervous passenger and prefer to be behind the wheel myself. I don't think I would be comfortable in a car that drives itself to be honest.

I am quite apprehensive about autonomous driving cars as their responses may be called into question? It may reduce the amount of incidents related to drunken driving. The future is certainly upon us and 'Back to the Future' is a reality now more than ever!

Clare  said:

I would rather not knock it down before I have tried it, I still do worry about getting into a Car that moves on its own. I think I would rather just Driver Technology is just helping people to become lazy. I what if the car gets hacked by someone and then they take you to your death?

Jadine E  said:

Slowly moving towards a much more technological future but I would not get into a self-driving car it feels like you much more at risk of getting into accidents.

Shristi  said:

I think at first it is certainly going to cause a lot of chaos and many people are going to be hesitant to use a self driven car especially after the incident in Arizona where the lady was killed by a self driven Uber.

However it is going to be interesting to see how the whole thing plays out!

pretty soon cars that you actually have to drive will become like horses did in the past.
redundant, and only kept as toys.
