Naspers

Many years ago I started playing golf with financial journalist, Alec Hogg, and one of his friends, Flippie Meyer.  Flippie was a retired Naspers journalist and after every round of golf Alec used to tease him because Flippie kept telling him that Naspers was going to make an absolute fortune based on a company that the CEO had invested in, in China, called TenCent.  Alec would assure him that TenCent was not going to be the winner that Flippie thought it was and that he was gambling a bit by having all his shares in one company.

Flippie subsequently died, after contracting, as I understand it, a strain of flu, on a golf tour, but I sometimes wish I listened to him rather than Alec, when he was talking about Naspers.  The price must have multiplied more than 30 times since then and Flippie, if he were alive today, would be a very rich man in terms of his shares.  TenCent has gone on to be, when I last looked, the 7th biggest company in the entire world and approximately a third of it is owned by a South African media company!  Koos Bekker of Naspers really has done incredibly well for his company and buyers of the share.  Many in South Africa say that the share price now is overpriced, but the international coverage of TenCent is also more optimistic – saying that TenCent has a lot more profits coming – meaning potentially of course that Naspers share price can still run quite a lot, despite its substantial increases already.

You will definitely need to a take a chance to see what happens, either it will work or it won't work.

Sometimes people get instincts and they don't always turn out correct, but in Flippie's case it did. Or perhaps some people just have a nack for these things - taking the risk was worth it in his case.

I think Naspers and other people who thought and invested in TenCent are now happy seeing the success in their investment.

Sometimes you win and sometimes you lose. Taking a risk can count against you or for you.

Taking a chance is sometimes worth the risk. The old saying you win some you loose some. Rather try than don't, Its like the lotto. Everyone wants to win but they don't play.. If you don't try you will never know.

It is sad that he never got to reap the benefits, however as mentioned below one just never knows and every investment is a gamble.

Everyone is guilty for not listening to their gut feelings sometime but we all cannot predict the future either and if we could we would all be where we desire to be.

Its all just a gamble and having lady luck on your side ... the same thing can be said for bitcoin. You honestly never know... any company has the potential to blow up you just have to hope that the stars are aligned in your favour. Patience is also a factor with these things.

I don't know much about golf. Naspers is a global internet and entertainment group and one of the largest technology investors in the world

While in hindsight it is very easy to see how correct he was, it could have easily gone the other way. TenCent is a very successful company now, but there's no doubt that there have been companies in the past with great ideas that have simply failed to take off. Every thing is 20/20 in hindsight.

This just goes to show that you should always follow you gut feeling! That is incredible how he just knew- It is extremely sad that he never got to see the great results that came from the risk he took.

What TenCent is providing is definitely the demand of this age and being ranked so high that proves they're doing the right thing. I think the diversity of their company is adds to that, and the fact that the Country is a "no-sleep, work-all-day" kind of Country, productivity is high.

I bet the ones who invested in TenCent are smiling from ear to ear right now, with the shares doing so well and being so profitable.

Tencent is the world's biggest investment corporation, one of the largest Internet and technology companies, as well as the largest and most valuable gaming (Tencent Games) and social media company in the world!! With gaming being as lucrative as it is, I am quite sure that TenCent will continue to go from strength to strength! Gaming or rather eSprots is a very financially profitable realm to dabble in...

On a side note: It is very sad to hear of the passing of a friend or acquintance as a result of flu! Quite alarming in actual fact, with Winter upon us we should take extra care!
