Roger Federer

I recently had the special opportunity of a front row seat to watch the greatest tennis player who has ever played the game win a 2 set match.  Roger Federer is not only an amazing tennis player, but I think he is an extremely good marketer.  He knows how to play the crowd, he knows how to acknowledge people in the audience, such as André Agassi, who very rarely attends tennis matches, but did attend the tournament which was played relatively close to where he and his wife, Steffi Graf, live in Palm Springs.  He is wildly popular, the stadium fills before his game and by the time the next game is to be played, even though it is on the centre court, half of the people have deserted their seats, if not more than half.  Watching him, you just realise that he knows how to say the right things at the right time, to be charming and to ensure that he is very marketable.  There are sports stars, and I can think of a number of South African golfers, who would make a lot more money if they were better at media interviews, at getting the crowd excited, etc and instead of being rather boring personalities who don’t say much, and probably as a result earn a lot less than they could.

I’m not a big tennis fan, but this is certainly a name I have heard many times before. It must be a great experience to watch one of these matches.

I must say, I am not much of a tennis lover but yes, personalities make a difference in your getting to know the player regardless of whether you watch the sport or not. I remember the likes of Martina Navratilova, Bjorn Borg, John McEnroe and the one who stands out the most is John McEnroe, not because he was the best but because he was always in the media. Good or bad, he was there and it was fun to keep up to date with him and his moods.

Personality is so important even in sports. If you think about it, one is always hearing of controversial and larger-than-life sports stars rather than those that simply perform well in the sport they specialize in. One needs to be able to work the crowd, no matter your expertise.

Personality in sport is really crucial, it keeps the fans interested and excited it allows fans who support these stars to almost feel like they know a little bit more of the person they support.

There's much to be said about a person's innate ability to be a crowd pleaser. We deal with it often, we have Counsel and Experts who are just naturally fantastic, and, then, we have counsel and experts, who, just aren't. As the old expression goes: "you will always catch more bees with honey than with vinegar."

Tennis has always been a sport I love and especially because it has quite a considerable amount of both female and male stars. Your personality and zest for the sport will enable how far you go.

Oh wow that sounds like quite an experience.
I actually enjoyed watching tennis but stopped a while ago. It's one sport that I actually played as a youngster as well and I would really love to get back into it.
Agreed that personality is very important when you're a big star. You have to sell yourself. It's not only in the sports field: musicians, models, chefs have to market themselves as well.

I think if you are a famous sport star that you at least need the personality to go with it
Yes obviously the sport made you famous but the type of person you are will be remembered long after you retired
And I think Roger Federer is a great example of still being humble and kind even though he is one of the greatest tennis players

I am not really into Tennis that much but it sounds exciting to watch him play. It seems like a lot of fun watching in real life than from a television.

Agreed that personality plays a huge role in your appeal, I don't really follow Tennis much but in comparison to Football players ego adds to their marketability. The bigger your ego, the more popular maybe?

Aside from Roger Federer being a good guy, the stadiums probably fill up because he is one of the best tennis players of our time. He has had one of the longest professional tennis careers, has won eight Wimbledon titles and the six titles in the Australian Open. The fact that he manages to be so humble and charismatic while being widely regarded as one of the best tennis players of all time is extremely admirable. I would, however, still go and watch al of his games (if I had the money) even if he wasn't charming.

Marketing is important in all fields. In many cases talent speaks for itself but only so loud. Sports personalities and really anybody else in the public eye must keep in mind that they themselves are a brand which requires a bit more than pitching up and doing the job to be great. It is all about putting on a show.

I dont really watch Tennis its never really been my thing - But i do agree that personality is a HUGE factor when being a sport star, if you're boring and mundane you are instantly going to be unmemorable and nobody is going to be interested in you

Suppose it is all about the person and their personality. One can learn to be that way. I do not really watch tennis, not really my thing, but have heard very good things about Roger Federer

If you go on his Wikipedia page, you can see just how much he has accomplished in his career as a professional tennis player, for example receiving the ATP fan's favorite award for 15 consecutive years and being the only person to have won the BBC Overseas Sports Personality of the Year 4 times! He really is an exceptional individual!

he is one of the players i know in mans tennis at the moment an he plays very well and indeed he is the best person one would want him as a mentor in tennis, not only because he knows his game, but simply because he did make tennis sports but he made it a dream for others

Roger Federer's mother hails from Kempton Park and he has embraced his South African roots - which makes him more appealling to me. However, I must say in terms of personality and charisma that Rafael Nadal surpasses him.
