You don’t care about the news, but you do about the petrol price

A lot of people say they don’t care much about the news and it does not interest them.  One of the reasons I think that should be is that the news generally affects you – whether it is in terms of investments you make in yourself and your education or in the areas where you purchase a property or when you buy shares.  It also affects you in more mundane, day to day things like the petrol price.  For example, right now, it is fairly obvious that we should see petrol price increases at the beginning of June.  We have seen some Rand weakness recently against the Dollar and oil is priced internationally in Dollars, so that in itself should see the price going up.  The other factor will be America pulling out of the agreement with Iran which has led to the oil price also going up.  Those two factors together make it pretty guaranteed that there will be a petrol price increase at the beginning of June and it just becomes a question of how much.  Any time there are political problems, strife or threats of war in the Middle East, of course you will also see a spike in oil or gas prices and there is certainly more chance of that at the moment than there may have been a month or two ago.

I enjoy reading the news, it is interesting to see what goes on in our country and the world. I like being abreast of all the latest stories, because some way or another it will have an impact on our country or our everyday lives.

I'm really not interested in any news you always hear about some money laundering. a murder that took place and the person will probably get out. It is too depressing to listen what is happening around us even around the world news.

I actually like to know what is going on in the news. I never did because it is always so depressing, but one should know what is going on in your country and in the world as it does effect us. Me, my mum and dad watch the news together every night at 19h00, obviously the best part of the news is the weather LOL.

The only time I listen to news is in the afternoons on my drive home. However its always the same, corruption, murders, fuel hikes. It is so depressing there and just puts a damper on ones day.

Petrol goes up and the news is always negative. I have some days that I listen to the news to know what's going on but most of the time its all the same.

It's always interesting to see how the news impacts one's daily life and routine. The news is not just out there somewhere, we are all impacted by what happens in some or other way.

News really bring out the aggression in me. I do agree that news affect us all and we should be in the loop all the time, but will all the corruption etc going on in daily news it's really not on the top of my list to do in the mornings.

Yes, these are not positive factors of the economic change in the country. I will agree only news will let us know what we will be facing next and one of the biggest disappointments is the petrol price increase.
I also listen 702, and this radio station is always on the top of all the news.

I have my on and off days with news. I like to be kept updated but I do not like to read the negative news anymore. It is always so negative and does affect you personally. But we do need to really be kept in the loop as well.... knowing what to expect.

It is important to know what's going on in the world so that you're not living in ignorance. The news helps you realize why the world is the way it is and also assists you in formulating your own world views and opinions. People with unsubstantiated views and opinions are generally irritatingly ignorant. Furthermore, when people have high powered positions, say for instance if they were the president of a world leading country, their unfounded opinions may prove to be dangerous.

I heard on the news that the petrol price will hike by about 60 to 70c/l in early June. That is a massive hike and, of course, food and other costs rise as a result, and those increased costs never seem to come back down with any decrease in the fuel price. We all pay a hefty price.

It is very important to know what is going on because in some or other way it will impact you for example the petrol price

Although the news is filtered it is extremely important to know what is happening in you Country and the Countries around you. I always make sure to either listen to the news or read it online on New24 or alternative sites.

We listen to the news the whole day on the radio. And actually it is very interesting to know what is happening in the world around us. When I was younger I never had any interest to watch news as I believed it will have a negative impact on my life. But these days we should beware all the time what is happening in the world we live in.

Listening to shows like 702 make the news bearable because its a bit more interactive than simply listening or watching the news. Citizens give their opinion and understanding of current news including well informed presenters. I must say I went through a phase where I literally just switched off to the news because everything is twisted and one doesn't know what to believe or often want to pretend that what isn't happening in the world is actually happening. I understand one needs to be informed but it definitely is sometimes depressing. I felt the fuel increase and just cannot imagine what June is going to feel like.

I watch the news when I get a chance to. I think its important to know what is going on around the world because they sometimes affect the Rand which leads to the fluctuation in prices of certain things such as fuel. The price of fuel is crazy. It makes you think of looking at other options to get around such as the Gautrain or even getting a hybrid car so you can end up saving in the long run with all the fuel price increases.

The petrol price just depresses me. A road trip these days is such an extravagant thing due to the cost of fuel. I was hopeful earlier this year with the decreases but now we are right back where we started. Watching the news is always a good thing to do but it just gives me anxiety.

The petrol price is forever increasing and we cannot do anything about it so we must all just live with it. Sometimes i will change the channel to the news but for its always depressing news and its not nice to see but i do feel it is important to see what is going on in your Country too.

Melissa  said:

Watching the news is very important, it will give you a bigger picture of how things works in this country. The petrol prices will keep on increasing and there is nothing a person can do about that.

I think caring about news it’s important, to know what’s happening around you and get information about things you did not know about. I think petrol price it's so confusing.

With me I am forced to watch the news by my son, as the next day at school each child has to give feedback as to what they seen or heard. I must through this my son is informed as to what is happening in and around the world and updates me even. It can be very disheartening but it is an eye opener at the end of the day.

I agree that people generally care about things which directly affect them such as petrol costs but often ignore world crises. Its tragic, yes, but how else can we interest people with problems and traumas worldwide - I don't think they turn a blind eye, maybe they just can't handle the truth about the cruelty in the world?

Bianca N  said:

The petrol price is forever increasing and one cannot keep up anymore.

Watching the news may help you understand why that is happening, but that does not make it less depressing that we need to pay more and more because of political unrest.

Alexis  said:

Politics and how they affect the normal person. It is quite something to make certain decisions and not care about the circumstances. I must say that I do not listen or care much of the news, unless it comes from 702 at least.

Clare  said:

I don't think that people don't care about the news but its the news that affects people its always negative and that is what people do not like I hate watching the News I will just deal with the petrol price when it goes up because what does we do fight that all we do in this world if Fight and I cant take the fighting anymore.

I often hear people say that they do not listen to the news, or read the news paper because of all the depressing articles that always make the headlines. I do agree to a certain extent, but I also believe it is very important to know what is going on in the world and and to have a fairly good general knowledge, even if it just helps to participate in a conversation.

Fikile  said:

In most cases people don't really like watching the news and it's important that people watch the news but in most cases news also carver a lot of things that are sometimes not important as much. It's going to be a big challenge if the patrol goes up simply because it means all the taxis and buses go up and it's going to be a very huge problem for other people to go to work or anywhere.
