NFL football v rugby

I have watched what we call American football, known by Americans simply as football, compared to what they would call “soccer”, since I was about 21.  In those days it was Joe Montana of the San Francisco 49’ers who was the star quarterback.  In those days I used to naively think that American football was more of a softie sport, compared to rugby and that rugby was far tougher and more violent.

There is no doubt that rugby certainly has its victims with a number of schoolboys paralysed every year, particularly those who play in the scrum, but I have realised over the years that football is far more violent and injury prone than rugby.  The padding really does not help you much, if somebody uses a helmet to dive, almost like a spear into your chest and ram that helmet into you.  At that point you would probably prefer that they were not wearing a helmet and were using their own head to inflict that damage on you!

In recent years, with the litigation we have all read about, we all know now from the repeated concussions that NFL players suffer, many have committed suicide and suffer from an injury known as CTE, correctly known as Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy.  Of the brains of 111 dead NFL players that were examined, 110 were found to have CTE, which is basically a degenerative disease linked to repeated blows to the head.  It is an extremely dangerous sport, far more dangerous than rugby and that is leaving out all the broken legs, etc that are commonly suffered.  If you ever had the chance to watch the 2015 movie “Concussion” starring Will Smith and see the opening scenes showing NFL tackles then you will never, after seeing that, ever think again that rugby is more dangerous than National Football League (NFL). The Superbowl this weekend stars the Los Angeles Rams against the New England Patriots led, once again, by 41 year old Tom Brady (married to former supermodel Gisele Bundchen), and the halftime show Adam Levine and Maroon 5.

I have not watched American football, I know it looks very dangerous and I will be at the edge of my seat for most of it! I have watched the movie concussion which was very interesting and shed some light on the game.

American football and rugby are very dangerous sports, I found very interesting to watch both oft them too. American football though is very popular all over the world, so staying in Ukraine I knew more about this sport then Rugby.

I have tried watching American football and it somehow just never seems to make sense to me. I guess I would have to watch a lot more of it to understand the rules and all that jazz.
Although I know the ins and outs to rugby, it's not my favourite sport to watch.

Both are very dangerous to play. And the injuries are intense!

Wow those are hectic stats, I think any sport has risk of injuries. Some more than others like boxing, rugby wrestling ect. I would definitely watch rugby before watching football.

Every sport has its injuries, I think Rugby and NFL are both dangerous Sports. One of my husbands’ former teammates recently passed away on the rugby field. It was devastating for his family and friends.

Growing up as an Afrikaans girl in a house full of boys, there wasn't one game my family missed. Whether it being my brother or cousins playing at school or some team playing on Supersport. I've never watched football except for what I've seen in movies. I do agree that both games are extremely dangerous and can cause great harm to the players.

I have watched a couple of NFL games and I personally think that it is more dangerous than Rugby. Its scary what those players put themselves through in that sport.

Americans are born a bred to love football and we are born and bred to love Rugby. I've never really been interested in either. I definitely do think NFL is more dangerous though

Alway when I watch movies and see the football players ,and them playing the game it looks so dangerous and so painful, but even Rugby is dangerous but I think Football is far more worse.

I love football / rugby and have watched various films where some of these sports really affect people. I suppose most sports have risky challenges to deal with. Anything can happen at any time but Rugby and Football is full contact all the time and over and over.

NFL football is undoubtedly a bit more violent than rugby, it's a completely different sport. Instead of tackling the player with the ball, every player runs into every other player as hard as possible to prevent them from getting the ball. I watched the Superbowl last weekend and, aside from the adverts, it was a pretty boring game.

I love watching NFL football be it men or women, very exciting to watch but very dangerous to play.
But all sport has danger so I guess it's the risk you take when you decide to do sport.

I watched that movie 2 years ago and i was shocked at what those players actually go through after all those hits to the brain. It is very serious and i agree i think it is a more dangerous sport than Rugby. I think that story really opened up a lot of people's eyes as to what really happens .

These concussions are so dangerous! Back here home, Former Springbok Pat Lambie has retired from all forms of rugby after suffering serious and ongoing concerns with concussions. He did great for our country as most notorious sports stars do but at what cost?

I watched concussion as well as a few documentaries on the AFL and concussions, it is so scary! Exactly the same with boxers.

Thabitha  said:

This is not even dangerous its brutality if 111 was examined and 110 of them were found with the disease then who ever is playing these sport has give up in life

I knew there are plenty of injures in Rugby and many of the injures are very serious. Most injures cause a lot of damage. I never knew Football injures are worse then Rugby. I do remember watching the Movie 'Concussion' but can't really remember what happens so i will definitely watch it again.

Fikile  said:

Football is dangerous and most people love it. I have looked at some movies that are mostly about football and all the injuries that most people get because of the game and it's very bad but people still want to play.

Tersia  said:
on Tuesday 05-Feb-19 08:02 AM
I can't think why anybody would want to do that to themselves. I would be way to scared, as you do get woman who play rugby. Every sport has their injuries, some obviously far worse than the other. It might be that some of the guys do it for the money, but no amount will get me to injure myself in that way. If you have the talent and the dream you probably have to go after it, but it's very scary to think that at the end of the day you could be left with severe injuries for the rest of your life.

Lucretia  said:

I will not lie, i do not have the foggiest idea what goes on in American Football and to be brutely honest, i dont really care. Not my idea of fun.

I have to agree with Jadine R, participants go willingly into such sport in hopes to reap the rewards of titles, awards etc. All of this is signed off in the contracts by them so they know well enough what could happen.

Zandelee  said:

All I know about this sport is what you watch on TV. I am not surprised that it is a very dangerous sport which clearly causes more injury than we could imagine....But I would agree that continuous blows to the head would not be advisable at all and serious long term damage would occur..

Tamaryn  said:
on Friday 01-Feb-19 01:57 PM
I'm never surprised by the fact that rugby players, football players and boxers suffer head injuries, largely permanent. I would have thought that the helmets they wear in American Football provided more protection though, but it appears not. I know in rugby they've gone to some lengths to prevent high tackles but it's still always going to be a risk. It makes me wonder whether being a NFL star or rugby player is really worth it in terms of their short careers and the ultimate consequences.

Jadine Richards  said:

All occupations come with Hazards, some worse than others. I suppose the participants believe the risk is worth the reward.

I watched the movie "Concussion" and saw how dangerous NFL football can be. Both sports are dangerous. I prefer my son one day to play European soccer as i believe that is the safest option.

I have never watched Football in my life! Rugby is my number 1 sport probably because I'm born in SA and Afrikaans. All sport's are dangerous, doesn't matter what safety gear you might be wearing.

Yes, the studies have shown that even the small bumps in Football can produce life long brain trauma because of the helmets they wear.
