Stampedes at UJ

I think that the stampedes at the University of Johannesburg were fairly predictable and that the University management clearly did a very poor job of managing their registration process. Last year’s newspapers had pictures of crowded streets outside UJ, and whenever there are such big crowds, you need to have proper crowd management in place.

It seems to be something that a country such as ours, apart from exceptions like the World Cup, is not very good at, whereas countries like the United Kingdom have dealt with their tragedies of the past more effectively, and now ensure proper crowd control at all times. If you know 50,000 people are turning up, and you do, because they came last year, you make proper provisions for it. You call in the police, you hire extra security guards and you split the registration between different campuses, depending on what the people are studying and different days depending on, for example, the first letter of their surname so as to reduce the crowds all on one specific day.

On top of that, I really don’t know how backward the registration process at UJ must be, in this age of Internet and technology, where they have to have last minute, stand in the queue registrations for tertiary education for 50 000 people? The vast majority of the applications should be dealt with over the Internet and via the post. After all, all they are really looking at generally is the potential students’ matriculation marks, and whether they get that via e-mail, the post or verify it with the relevant government departments themselves, they don’t need to have 50,000 people all trying to squeeze through one gate on the same day every year. Quite frankly, those who have seen relatives injured or lost should think of taking legal action against the University of Johannesburg.

I registered with UJ before, and I never had these issues. As Ting mentioned, I took the initiative to register way in advance, and followed up. These people that want to register last minute, should not even be entered to study - they could be our doctors one day - I would not want someone like that operate on me...

i agree with julie, and ting it is pathetic that you have not registerd on time as Uj said they have enough time in which to register, and check up if you haven't heard anything! but no they all want to wait to the last and then expect to be given place,if this is the future i sure iam glad iam not part of it,they still act like barbarians!!

Couldn't agree more, even if it is late registrations - they should really have perhaps made a day for a few surnames with the letters A to D for example etc.. There are so many solutions they could come up with if they really just think about it logically. I heard that the child's mother that was stood on and died is being offered free tuition - I don't think that is nearly enough and knowing UJ its most likely only for the first year. I think anyone who got hurt should definitely sue, its unacceptable.

I feel like they definitely turned a blind eye in managing the crowd during this years registration period. I hope that they have learnt their lesson and in future make the necessary crowd control arrangements (As per some of yours above).

As this could of all been avoided if this matter was taken seriously.

Although UJ did take some measures to control the crowd, it was not good enough-especially taking into account the fact that it happened last year as well-they could have learnt from that. One also has to take into account the roll that the crowd itself played in the causing the stampede. What makes matters worse is that the minister of education intervened only after somebody was killed as a result of the stampede. This could have been prevented if the correct measrures were taken last year already.

I think that the campus was so crowded because the students applying this late waited for their matric results as they did not qualify on their grade 11 or provisional matric results. Another factor that could have caused the stampede at UJ is that they now offer diploma and degree courses. Prospective students should also realise that universities are not the be-all and end-all for the next level of education. There are other avenues avialable. It is good though, to see that so many matriculants are keen on furthering their education.

Let's hope that next year registraton process will not be a repeat of the last two years.

I agree that they could've really handled this better than they did. There's no excuse that they could ever come up with that would justify what happened here.
