Proposals to change public holidays

As an employer, I read with excitement that recommendations submitted to the President suggest changes with regard to public holidays. The committee feel that there are too many public holidays at the moment and some have religious connections to one religion only which is of course not fair to other religions. Some of the proposals make sense. If a date is important, because on that day, in the past something important happened, then that is the important day. It cannot be, when that day falls on a Sunday that you need to make the Monday a public holiday because for anybody to whom the date is important, they will naturally celebrate on the Sunday, and there is simply no basis to take the Monday off, when that date is of no consequence in terms of history.

We are taking part in a global economy and there is no point in simply giving people days off just because the remembrance of the historical day fell on a Sunday that year. Naturally, the South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry supported fewer holidays, given that they would obviously be in favour of more productivity which this country desperately needs. Other proposals include removing Family Day, Boxing Day and the Day of Reconciliation as well declaring some public holidays half days only, as opposed to full days off. I am sure for the usual brigade, who believe that you should have 30 days’ sick leave a year, not work more than 20 hours a week, and get paid overtime for the work you made sure you did not finish during working hours that there will be the usual howls of protest, but for those of us who would like to try and get our economy improving, it is a great idea – and it is only a pity that they say this process is going to take at least three years to finalise!

For the capitalist out there work your feet to the bone, on public holidays. Nobody said you have to take the day off.Is it not a shame that these days people live to work, not the other way around. The reason why people have too much work on their plates is because of profit gain to investors and employers. Less people, more hours, bigger profits. I work a 12 hour day for 6 sometimes 7 days without renumeration because of too little resources in a big company of 1200 employees.Personally i like public holidays as it gives me a break. I have to agree with Benita. As for a 3 day weekend, i promise you the employers will find a way to make you work on your weekend, they just call it a company requirement.

I have to agree with Juliet.... I can't think of anything better that a 3 day weekend :). Weekends are just too short... If this can be arrange then I honestly dont mind giving up my holidays:)... I also agree with a lot of comments here, the religious holidays should be taken by the ones who's religious it is. Like for example it's kind of unfair for non-Christians to take Christians holidays and they still get their religious days off too.

Some of these public holidays can really go. You fall behind in your work when you take one day off.

It's just such an inconvenience - when you have so much work to do and cannot because of public holidays - I do not really see the point of them and would prefer if they limited it to only the days that matter

I have no problem with them eliminating public holidays if carried over to a Monday, and keeping it to a weekend. I must agree though with some of the comments wherein it was suggested that every religion only gets off on the specific holidays that apply to their religion. Religion, limited to only the most important days in order to keep the amount of days taken off fair.

No matter what our views are - should a go-ahead be given, then it'll be implemented anyway. We're living in a competitive world with millions of people without jobs. I will take it as it comes and just see... Should I have been able to change anything though, I would love working flexi-hours. You have people that are late sleepers and you have early risers. You will have people at the office before 7am and people at the office after 7pm. You would also have group one having lunch at a certain hour and group two at another time - you will therefore have an open office from say 7am until 7pm with someone at the office 12 hours a day...

I enjoy having public holidays but if they must be taken away I don't think it will that much of an adjustment or big deal. as long as they keep Christmas, boxing day and New years day actually, then im all good.

as an athiest, ALL religious public holidays irritate/offend me. if a day is particularly special (like Eid/Xmas//Pesach) take it off, and let it come from your anual leave. the political public holidays are also a waste of time, they are merely electioneering days by politicians. same rule as religious public holiday should apply. take it off, and let if come from your anualy leave. south africans are generally a lazy bunch, who use public holidays as another 'piss up'.

In an attempt to win, I would like to say that we should do away with all public holidays and simply make weekends 3 days long :)

Okay yes we have allot of holidays but we could always be like overseas now and work from 09:00 to 18:30 to get the Friday's off. Now that would be awesome I think a 3 day weekend beats public holidays.

I understand the Monday, public holiday, being taken away. Anyone who moans about it will realise that this only happens every 7 years so complaining is of little use. However, a half day rather than a full day is ludicrous. We cant even get good service when its a full days leave in most institutions, how on earth are we going to get a good service if people know they are closing shop early. I would also like to see this being monitored. Religious holidays should be taken by each religion only when it is applicable to them. This way when the Jewish people are off, gentiles will be working, when Christians are off, non-Christians will be working, etc. This way, there will ALWAYS be someone working. The fact that everyone has to take Christian holidays is silly. A non-Christian should have the opportunity to take his/her own religious holiday. As long as the same amount of days are given across the board for all religions I, personally, don't see a problem.

I have no problem with them re-evaluating the need of certain public holidays. Christian religious holidays are taken off by everyone even when they do not believe in it. I feel strongly that if you have a different religious choice, which is your prerogative, and you take off from work for their celebrations then you should not be allowed to take off for the Christian religious holidays as well.

I have two Religious holidays a year which are both Eid Days one is after our fast month and the other is for slaughtering.
I think they might want to make other public holidays eg Mandela Day etc thats why they want to do away with some.

I think everyone just enjoys a public holiday and half of the time we do not even know what it is for.
