Not very competitive - Porsche

I was stunned recently to hear that if you own a Porsche, which I don’t, and wish to sell it, you are almost force to use a Porsche dealership to sell it. The reason, if you don’t sell it by a Porsche dealership, they will not honour the warranty. I must say that I find that very anti-competitive, because essentially it stops people selling their Porsche privately, it forces them to take whatever the offer is from the dealer in terms of a trade-in price, and it also stops other dealers being able to sell any Porches that are still under warranty.

Who would want to buy a car that has a warranty, but is not eligible for it? It forces the person trying to sell it without going through the dealership to considerably reduce their price and keeps the price of Porches in the Porsche dealership, artificially high one would imagine. One then gets the impression from the media that when you buy a Porsche it loses very little of its value because the media compare the new prices to the second hand prices but, they are not comparing a new price to what you would get if you traded it in at the dealership. I am somewhat surprised that the Competition Commission has not looked into that, or indeed that it is acceptable, but maybe there is another side to the story which I am sure is going to be that only the dealership can make sure that the vehicle is in excellent condition – which of course ignores the fact that if you buy a Mercedes or BMW that is under warranty, it’s under warranty whether you buy it from the dealership or the guy down the road.

As an independent luxury car dealer, we have noticed a BIG decline in sports car owners purchasing Porsche vehicles, unless it's a classic. The overall attitude and service received from Porsche SA has lowered significantly compared to recent years. This is disappointing as the brand's attempt to run a monopoly will ultimately push possible buyers and enthusiasts towards other brands.

I unfortunately own a 2011 Porsche and to my dismay I wanted to sell it to a mate. Porsche notified me that they will not honor the warranty if I sell the vehicle privately. I understand there was a recent judgement where Porsche lost the matter and have to honor the warranty. Does anyone have a case reference in this regard.

Red is my favourite colour, wouldn't mind having one myself ...

If I had cash like that to spend I would definitely pop into a Ferrari dealership before I consider a Porche. It's all about manipulating the market in their favour.

I don't really like any Porsche cars, maybe the Cayenne but I completely agree with Caron. All the cars she mentioned are cars I looooove! Oh well, there are positives and negatives to Porsche I guess

I wouldn't buy this car to begin with, I really don't like it all.. But agreed this is a unfair circumstance.

My opinion is that people who buys a Porsche buys it as a collector's item - not with the intention to sell it.

I don't like Porsches, think there are way better cars out there anyway. Nothing beats a paid off car. Cars are too expensive to buy and maintain.

Porsche has to be as unique as its name. if every second person drove a Porsche the brand would lose its uniqueness as Angie said Porsche is a rich man's car and that's the way it should be.

I have to agree with Moenisha, if you have the money and buying such an expensive car makes you happy then go ahead and buy it but don't be stupid and buy the car when you know you cannot really afford it.

I say if you can afford it and that's what you want go for it.

I would never in my life pay such a price for a car whether I have the money or not. I would buy a decent house, pay for my child's life and education and to be honest I would rather donate to an Orphanage than waste money on something that you will honestly get tired of before the warranty wears off. A bit of charity could make a huge difference in this country.

I personally feel that if you want to buy something luxurious such as a porsche that you should be able to afford it. Therefore you should buy it brand new and not second hand. Besides the price factor and the warranty issue - I feel its an exclusive, 'rich man's car' and so perhaps they want it to stay exclusive and only sold to the wealthy man.

Well people that can afford a Porsche definitely would care about the amount they sell the car for. People do not become rich if they do not care about money and how much they get back.

I was under the impression the warranty was only for 2 years? Not many people buy a car with the intention of selling it within 2 years after which one wouldn't have a warranty anyway if the warranty period is 2 years. The expensive car market is a monopoly and obviously people who buy these cars don't care about any future expenses
