Internet banking fraud

An interesting article on the My Broadband website dealt with how people steal from the banking accounts of others.  Most of the time this unfortunately involves SIM swaps.  They normally steal the information by a phishing attack, which occurs when you receive one of those e-mails telling you that you’ve got a refund, or that your banking details have changed.  It is no wonder that people fall foul to such tricks, because one is simply bombarded with those e-mails – I must get probably two a day, at least and that is excluding all the millions that somebody wants to put into my account because I was named in somebody’s will and the easier to spot scams!

Things are made worse when one’s bank says that they will never send you communication via e-mail, they don’t ever send you anything that you have to fill in – and then they do!  For example, Nedbank recently sent me an e-mail saying that if I use my firm’s Nedbank credit card machine during the month of November we will be able to claim our share of R1 million and they sent me e-mails asking me to register to take part in that process.  It is exactly e-mails like that, which the bank has confirmed is genuine, which cause the confusion.  The banks are using e-mails to communicate with people, as I guess one would expect in this day and age, and they are using e-mails to ask you to fill in forms to register for things, so now it becomes a question of spotting the difference between a real registration and a fake registration.  I guess it all boils down to simply not filling in any forms, for anybody involving your banking and personal details.  I am not talking about online purchases with credit cards – something I have done for years and without any problems – I am talking specifically about filling in your banking account details to allegedly win your share of a prize or get a refund from SARS or someone else!

What scares me even more is the amount of adverts that pop up just before entering your actual profile and pin numbers. I am always scared that these "ads" are run by some random hacker sitting waiting for you to press the wrong button so that he/she/they can gain access to what is happening on your computer at that very moment.

I have won some kind of lottery overseas a hundred times already and all you have to do is phone them to claim your prize. So the one time I phoned them to see what is going to happen and then they said I have to go to this place and meet this person and give my banking details so that my prize money can be paid into my account. They have so many different scams to rob you best is some people fall for that and they lose everything!! Anything to get hold of YOUR money!

If only all the money I win on a daily basis really appeared in my bank account ... life would be peachy! ;)

Its ridiculous! People trying to steal others hard earned money. My advice is simply ignore all of it and block the number/email address if possible. If your bank wants you to badly fill anything in they will eventually phone you to come in etc. Another useful tool is the internet, I find a lot of the time people post their stories online and you can find it simply by googling the persons name/email or story that you were sent!

I ignore it all - every time I get an email or notification that comes from the bank etc. I will check it first, just to make sure - but then delete it. The people who do this need a life and leaves us the hard workers who deserve the money we have alone.

I "win" amazing amounts of money in all currencies every day... Fraud is extremely real and people fall victim to fraud on a daily basis. I am extremely private with any of my personal details, especially my banking details. We have to be so careful these days because fraud comes in every form.

And there are so many people that fall for these scams.

Very good Blog to talk about and be again aware of sharing personal information online. Myself recently received cheque from other company on R 1 000 000.00 that I won in some kind of competition and to get this cheque I need to fill some kind of forms online and give my credit card details for some kind of fee!
