Traffic light disasters

I have written over the years quite a lot about the continuous traffic light problems that we have in Johannesburg.  An article in The Sunday Times on 29 December 2013 caught my eye and dealt with this problem, mocking somewhat sarcastically, as I have before, the allegation that Johannesburg is a world class African city!  Apparently the Western Cape does not have the same traffic problems and that is because it is dealt with better than it is in Johannesburg. Unbelievably, the Johannesburg Roads Agency or JRA only has 22 technicians to look after 2 113 traffic lights.  The centre that sends out those technicians is staffed by only four people who work 12 hour shifts of two people only.  In other words, when somebody lays a complaint about a robot being out of order, there are only two people that are dealing with those complaints at any given time.  One has to lay complaints because unlike other Municipalities, apparently Johannesburg does not have fully automated signals which would automatically alert the centre if there was a problem, so if motorists don’t tip them off and actually phone them, they will not know about the problem!

The message is twofold – firstly, we need to report all traffic issues to the Johannesburg Roads Agency and secondly, we need to put pressure on the Municipality to allocate more staff, both technicians and to the management centre to deal with these problems which ultimately costs us probably billions in lost productivity as thousands of people sit unnecessarily in traffic every morning and every evening.  The registered site of the JRA is www.jra.org.za and the phone number, which you can put on your phone to call at any time when you come across a faulty traffic light or a problem is 0860 562 874 and the e-mail address is [email protected].

Out of order traffic lights a peak hour horror story. A pity that the choices on the voting buffet has to be shared with so many people who cannot make a well informed decision

It is always the same traffic lights that don't work. I don't understand why it is rains a bit they don't work , but CT gets more rain than us and their traffic lights work. They need to get more staff or fire the staff they have and get better people that does the job right.

This is nothing new. I agree with Tanya, its the community's fault. Lets vote for THEM and THEY will change the country. Its really time to wake up. Vote for change. The only changes that are happening is more stuff going wrong and not being fixed

It really is not surprising anymore. When one robot is down you can expect a lot of traffic and this year has only began.....

I think the Municipality needs to allocate sufficient staff to sort out the traffic light problems

This explains why a robot could be out for weeks at a time. Its sad to think that they have the ability to employ more people but choose to provide us with terrible service to save money

Really doesn't surprise me anymore, I know when we drive to work the one robot at Wemmerpan is always broken, out of order ect. The best part is that there wont be any metro directing traffic but just on the next robot (which is working) there will be metro there directing the traffic when it is not needed and causing more traffic.

I agree with Catherine, it shows that there are job opportunities but still there is so many people unemployed. I don't think it would matter if we report the traffic issues, nothing is this country is really done about anything.

Yep, Cape Town's roads and traffic are MUCH better than Johannesburg which is quite shocking. I mean the fact that the government is coining it at the moment with the e-tolls, surely they could appoint more staff? Oh well...

With the current rate of unemployment JRA has 22 technicians to look after 21113 traffic lights???. No wonder faulty traffic lights go on for ages without being fixed resulting to accident and unbearable traffic jams.

Traffic lights are out all the time, best is after when it rains for a while. Its annoying. The problem is that yo can report it - but is anything actually going to happen straight away or are you going to have to wait months before anything is done

I think it is a neglected issue as the decision makers are not affected by broken robots and the majority is also not affected. The decision makers just put on their blue lights and drive in the yellow line, and the majority are driven by taxis which also just drive in the yellow line. They are like, "What traffic problems?"

I have family in CT, who told me that their street light went out, the reported it to the municipality and the street light was fixed within three hours. Perhaps, in Johannesburg we are used to everything not working and not being efficient that we don't take the time to actually call and report the problems. However, from my experience with our municipality, things just don't get done, and maybe it is because there are not enough staff. I will certainly give it a try and see whether anything changes. But, perhaps the efficiency of Cape Town municipality should really be examined by people living in Johannesburg, especially with upcoming elections, maybe a change of political party could bring about some changes.

This is no-ones fault but our own. If every idiot that voted for our favorite political party had just 1 extra brain cell maybe we could have a political party in power that simply functions as it should and has public departments function as they should. The JRA, the RAF, you name it and its a mess...
