Social discontent looming

We may not see too many social protests now, but there is no doubt that we are going to see more in the years to come.  How the government reacts at that time will determine, to a large extent, what sort of country we live in and hopefully we don’t go down the route of Zimbabwe, where President Mugabe started blaming a minority section of the population for all Zimbabwe’s problems.

I was shocked to read in the City Press recently that the government budgeted an extra R500 million for food parcels, vouchers and cash grants for social relief in 2008 when we had an election.  By 2011 this amount was down to R118 million and surprise surprise, with 2013 being an election year, the amount is back up to R479 million.  City Press interviewed a number of people in various townships who basically said that ANC members promised them food packages before elections if they registered and voted.  Things must be pretty desperate in many parts of our country if people are voting so that they can get food packages and what makes it worse is that actually after the election the people claimed that the groceries they were promised on a monthly basis were not delivered.  The food parcel apparently amounts to R1 200,00 and the complaints have been made with the Public Protector, by the DA, about previous instances of this in Tlokwe.  In almost all instances the food parcels had only been delivered just days before an election.

I am glad that I have a choice to vote or not and I have made that choice I am not voting for any party anymore because there is no deference between Apartheid time and now (freedom)

"Bribery", "corruption" and "broken promises". Yet people still vote to keep them in power. People need to seriously wake up and smell the coffee!!

The saying "Give and Take" The ANC defiantly knows how to play it's people, when to give and most certainly how to TAKE!!!

ANC promises the people the world just before election time, then they get the votes and forget about the people till next election time. The people must wake up and start voting for a different party.

I studied law with a Zimbabwean girl; she came from quite a wealthy and educated family. Naturally as our friendship grew, I began to learn a lot more about her and her family. I was shocked to find that she was open about the fact that she votes for Mugabe. Her reason: He had given their country freedom from the colonialists and thus they would remain loyal. Even though the country's economy was in shreds, even though she had come to South Africa to study, even though her families business was no longer as prosperous as it should have been.

What I am trying to illustrate is that even though the ANC has shown us that many of their members are corrupt, often incompetent and do not have the best interests of our society at heart, the people of SA do remember who gave them freedom from Apartheid. They remember who gave them food parcels and who has promised them a house. And the DA or any of the opposing parties have not offered enough to the people. Intellectual ideals spouted out in speeches advocating a less corrupt society is nothing to a poor, uneducated South African. I agree with Juliet, The DA should be handing out food parcels and SHOWING the people of South Africa why life would be better with them in power.

anecdote: They ask Mugabe, why people still vote for you. He says "well,i cut off electricity for a week, when i put it back, they all scream YAY and appreciate me more .
Same with ANC"lets just starve them first, then we give them food, they will be ready to vote .

I agree with Juliet and Yolandie P. It seems like the ANC wants you to die first before lending a hand....and still the people will vote for ANC.

It is very sad that they have to resort to these desperate attempts to win votes. Bribing hungry people with food is downright cruel and it is shocking that this is how our government plans to stay in place as the ruling party. Makes me sick

If you are tired of something, promises being made but not kept, don't you get tired of it? I can not believe that the people does not vote for change. Before elections, promises are being made about houses to be build and this and that... But they never ever come to light about them.

Agreed with Kaylee , if you are tired of suffering why not vote for a different party?

Liesl  said:

Just another low blow by the ANC to tap into a rich vein of poverty and desperation of people to influence their perceptions, decisions and behaviour through devious and deceptive tactics. Underhanded manipulators who in reality do not loose a minute of sleep for the people they claim to care for.

Kaylee  said:

Its absolutely shocking that you have to bribe your way into power. It only proves that our government know that they are not doing things right, so they have to implement false promises to win the votes of those who were fooled into believing that the government would actually honor their promise and bring them food, housing and schools etc. It's actually a disgrace!

Sorea  said:

What a government!

Juliet  said:

People are starving. Their children are starving. They will do anything for food and they are not in the same state of mind as others, where they can think about the future. They are trying to satisfy their most fundamental level of needs and that includes food and water, basically they are just trying to survive. Things like politics etc is way beyond their priorities. Basic survival occupies their time and energy. The DA should be handing out food and homes like crazy if they want any chance.

Tersia  said:

That is just sad

Simone  said:
on Friday 17-Jan-14 08:45 AM
The problem is that before every election new promises were made to these people. Some of the promises were that they will give every child a bicycle and build more schools, once everyone voted none of these promises came to life. It is sad that these people rely on the political parties and vote for them year after year even though they are so corrupt...
