Gautrain to expand

It is terribly exciting to see that Gautrain has been such a success that they are planning on expanding it.  Recently the bids for planning and designing the new phase of the Gautrain route closed and there are going to be extensions to the East Rand Mall, Boksburg, Westgate, Ruimsig, Roodepoort, Sunninghill and Fourways.  People will be able to catch the Gautrain, for example, from Fourways to Pretoria and be there far faster than they could ever be in the traffic.  One would also be able to catch the Gautrain from Fourways to Rosebank and the Gautrain will finally make it to Soweto as well.  At the moment these are just proposals and there is obviously a chance that some of these will change, because it is just in the planning phase for now.  If the Gautrain is going to come to Fourways one would hope that it would also go to the Lanseria Airport as well given that the airport is expanding and building a second runway for increased air traffic.  In terms of their plans the rail link between Sandton and northern Johannesburg will be the first phase of the project.

Hi There,

Any news on the progress of this? It was already announced in 2013 we are now 2 years later

It was only a matter of time before they decided to expand the routes - it will be like New York soon where you can just hop on a train and get to where you want to go.

Oh wow. Intresting. Haven't even been on it. Maybe ill try it someday, I have a fear of trains so I doubt it will be any time soon.

that would be wonderful as it will most like decrease traffic, and travel expenses for most people.

Wow expanding already and I haven't even used it! Should really go ride it. I think it would be great. Less traffic for us that travel from Heidelberg.

This was probably the best thing that came out of the world cup! I love using the Gautrain and often use it when travelling from OR Tambo to Rosebank - so convenient!

This is wonderful news if the Gautrain will be running from Roodepoort as I stay in the Westrand much easier to travel in then to sit in traffic.

This is great news, I love the Gautrain so much faster and easier, except for peak hours but then again it beats the traffic. Wish they can extend to Alberton.....

I really hope they don't take 3 years or more to get it up and running. With the petrol prices going up most people would rather use the Gautrain.

Its good to hear that the Gautrain is so successful. If it could go to Lanseria Airport it would be great. Its so much easier and quicker to go to the airport with the Gautrian than to sit in traffic and possibly miss your flight.

This is great news! I live in Fourways and spend a good three hours in traffic to get to work and back! I have thoroughly enjoyed taking the train from Rosebank to Pretoria, it so convenient. I am excited for this expansion.

I love the Gautrain. I think it runs exceptionally well, its clean is a great alternative to driving to Pretoria. It is beyond exciting to hear about this expansion. Just think about the reduction in traffic, pollution and stress! Not to mention the positive impact it may have on tourism in Gauteng as tourists will have an easier time getting around.

I think while they are working on all these improvements, a bullet "Sautrain" to Cape Town or Durban would be wonderful as well.

Good news, if it doesn't take 10 years to happen

I was watching it on enca last night and was impressive. Definitely something I would use if it is well maintained and runs on time. Brought back memories of the Metro in France and the Tubes in London. If it can work as efficiently as they do, we are onto a winning streak traffic wise.

This is wonderful news, will be great if around Gauteng will be Gautrain stations where we can catch train anywhere we need to. I would love to travel everyday to work and back home on Gautrain, it is luxury of not sitting in traffic for an hour or worry about petrol increase and maintenance on the car. But this project will take time to come to life though.

This is fantastic for our economy and for commuters to gain easier access to work etc. I am however ashamed to say that I have never been on the Gautrain at all.

Hopefully they decide to expand even more eg. Heidelberg(which still falls under Gauteng) area.

The more the Gautrain expands the better it would be. If the Gautrain had to come to the South, i can guarantee that it would be a huge success. Many people from the South travel to Sandton and Pretoria for work and it would save a lot of money and would also certainly help with congestion on the road in the South.

Liesl  said:

This is great news! If I had the option of using the Gautrain instead of my own car I would definitely do it. Perhaps if the popularity and success of the Gautrain continues to expand there might be a station close to where I live one day to that I could use

Monique  said:

Ah awesome news. The Gautrain is a very pleasant way of travelling without the stress from traffic.

That is awesome as i stay in Ruimsig. I heard that this will only be ready from the years 2020 - 2025. i have never been on the Gautrain and i am really looking forward to that experience.

This is indeed good news. I love using the Gaurtrain and would much rather use that to commute than having to sit in traffic.

david  said:

I do hope it comes to be. I would much rather use public transport to commute, what with the ever increasing petrol price, and the cost of, and maintenance to, a car.

Sorea  said:

I cannot wait until the Gautrain comes to Roodepoort. It will make commuting so much better. :)

At least some good news for this Country. But still if only in the planning phase a good few years until it will be up and running. Hopefully this does take some of the traffic of the Highways.
