Kill switch on phones

Cell phones are going to become far less likely to be stolen in the future.  The big manufacturers are now producing a so-called kill switch on the phones which is a software application that allows you, once your phone has been stolen, to lock down your phone and the phone can only then be reactivated with the correct password or pin number.

That of course removes any market value of the phone, because it becomes a paperweight for the papers on your desk and can no longer be used as a phone and it should bring thefts right down.  This would take time to implement, but some of the phones have only recently had these applications installed but six months after Apple introduced its activation lock, iPhone robberies have fallen by 24% in London and by 38% in San Francisco.  During that same time frame thefts of Samsung phones went up 51% leading to Samsung introducing a kill switch for its Galaxy S5 device in April.  Consumer bodies do hope though that the cell phone companies take this a step further and that instead of making the device an optional added extra, that it is automatically activated, as at the moment it is not, even on those phones that have the option.  On the iPhone you set this up by downloading the Find my iPhone Application.

This is a plan yes, but i agree with Juliet that thieves will definitely figure out how to get past that, just like the Nigerians and Pakistanians have already figured out most other things when coming to technology, so not really the best idea in the world.

This is a great idea

Smart idea indeed, however thieves are always also upgrading their skills. I hope this will work worldwide because before one could block the phone but if the phone is taken out of the country, then it works perfectly.

Good idea but someone will crack it

I am sure that many network providers will be against this as I am sure that this will have an effect on their insurance department

What an excellent idea, hopefully it will become part of the phone and not just be extras

what a great idea. Juliet's idea is a great idea tool. I would also attach a paint bomb to my bag/wallet so when the thief grabs the bag and runs, you wait a bit, then press the button and voila! the thief is all over in acidic red or yellow paint, the bag is damaged with all the content.

Yes great idea Juliet, and after it has exploded, lets off a type of residue on the thief, which is then traceable.

The App should be able to be installed on any phone, not just new releases.

This is brilliant. I must say that I like Juliet's idea more though. That way it is easier to find the perpetrator as well. Whoever has burned hands should be thrown in jail. I just hate that people can take things you work hard for!

I've had my phone stolen before, and I had to go back to using one of those ancient 33.10 Nokia phones for about a year, which was tough. I just claimed I was being hipster... but the truth is, I was pretty bleak. This is a great idea, and I hope that it is a strong deterrent for cellphone theft. I have to agree with Juliet though and say that it is likely that thieves will find a way around the kill switch.

It is a good idea however the thieves will figure out how to jump the system eventually. Barbed wire used to stop house break ins, thieves become more educated so it is a matter of time. But for now sounds like a good idea. Would be a better more permanent solution if when your phone is stolen you activate a self-destruct action and the phone literally explodes in the thief's hand. No one can snoop around that. Pretty permanent.

This is a fantastic idea especially in a country like ours where the government cannot do anything about crime or does not want to do anything about crime. Software developers come to the rescue. But just like anything, someone will figure out a way around it and a way to crack it, unfortunately.

It is about time because those of us who drive on Joe Slovo see smash and grabs on a daily basis with innocent victims having to foot the bill for not only a new phone but also the replacement of a window.

I think this will be the next best thing! Hopefully this will be available on all cellphone types and not only smartphones.
