I read with interest recently that Uber has started in South Africa. Its basically a taxi service but not the regular registered taxi’s one is used to. I have used the service in America and essentially you download an application to your phone, register with your name, cell phone number and credit card number and then using the GPS facility within your phone, which works out where you are, to indicate which address you would like to be taken to and Uber will send a driver along for you.
You sometimes have a choice of cars with a fancy black car costing you more than the uberX car. Uber is having problems in many countries around the world who feel that they are competing with taxis, somewhat unfairly, but in my experience, a taxi driver is still cheaper. During my test in America I went to a place with a taxi which cost me $11 and when I came back from that same place to my starting point it cost me $42 with Uber which is four times as much. In fairness to Uber they did send me a warning that it was peak time due to a music festival taking place at the same time, and I was not in the downtown area, and I had to enter onto the app on my phone that I agreed that I would be paying 2,75 times the normal rate so as to procure a driver. It is huge in cities like New York, where business people are using them more and more in competition with taxis and of course it is one more option if you are in an area without a taxi.
I think we will also find some people in South Africa who are going to decide that using their car and register as an Uber driver might just suit them, because they can decide when they are going to work, for example on a weekend only, but it is something that people will have to be fairly careful about and choose a safe location to work in. Lastly, the drivers are rated, so you get a picture of the driver who is on the way to you, you can track on GPS where they are and how long they are going to take to get to you, you can see their overall rating such as 4,9 out of 5 and they in turn give you a rating! You don’t pay when you get out of the car or anything like that, because that is all arranged via the app and your credit card is charged automatically as the journey ends.

This sounds a brilliant idea. I hope it will go a long way to carb the death toll in this country caused by reckless, negligent and drunken driving on the roads.

I think this is a great service to be using when you had a drink to many. Do not risk someone else's life when you just think that you are okay to drive, because you are not. Use the Uber app and get home safe. I will never use this app because i never drink and drive.

If you are a Standard Bank client you have 4 free "take me home" services per year! However, since mine have run out due to looooong Friday nights I have also used Uber! Think its a great idea!

I think this is great, Ill definitely make use of it when going out. When I was in Ballito me and my friends used a taxi service, was not the best service but they got us home safely and its safer than driving home after having some drinks

Interesting idea, maybe I will make use of it one day. I watched a movie 'chained' where people get abducted in a taxi and killed. so I am not one to get into a taxi, but with a registered service obviously there is more safety in that. And comfort. A few years ago while in margate we called for a taxi and the car and driver that pitched up was horrific we weren't even sure we would make our destination

This is great, I know FNB also have a service where you can call them to drive you home. You pay with you credit card and they drive your car to your house and make sure you are safe home.

Sounds awesome, I hardly go out but I think this is very useful for a person that goes out on a regular basis; its amazing what people come up with these days.

Living in a country with an appalling public transport system and high alcohol per capital intake, Uber's another sensible introduction into the market to curb the number of drunk driver's on the road.
Though it might affect business!

Sounds good but will it work in South Africa and I agree with Kaylee it is not worth the risk after drinking to drive.

Sounds great. If a group of friends club in it will be worth your while and peace of mind. We don't have great public transport facilities at the moment so Uber is a good idea.

Many of my friends are also enjoying uber and rant about it all the time. I however, also would rather pay with cash or swipe my normal card than use a credit card (because at 24 I still do not have one!). Either that or they could send me a bill at the end of the month, but we all know what a nightmare that would be for any company. Taxi's are slowly taking over in South Africa, or should I say safe cabs. When I go to Cape Town every December I always use Excite Taxi's. They are quite awesome too, reliable and inexpensive!

This sounds good and all, but myself in particular would not be able to make extensive use of this service. On a night that is spur of the moment and I have not charged my phone, is sure to be dead by 2 in the morning so would not be able to use the app in any event.
But in general could be a useful.

This sounds great. Like Kaylee said its not worth the risk by driving your self after a drink or two. The thing is just how long will it be safe to use in SA?

I don't think i would take the chance of giving out my credit card number (not that i have one) But even people at the bank take your money out of your account or it gets hacked and in this lifetime it is a big risk.. Uber might be great for if you go out and you know you going to have a few drinks but i would rather pay cash

A lot of my friends are using Uber and they love it. I have not used it, mostly because I already have a Goodfellas membership.

Uber is the best, my whole group of friends uses Uber almost every weekend! Its so convenient. It really is not worth the risk, even after one drink, to drink and drive. I highly recommend this service to anyone. The app is great because you can actually track how far the taxi is from your destination, so if you are still trying to get everyone together you know how long they are going to be. The fee is generally deducted from your credit card and to be honest its not at all that expensive especially if you go out in a group of friends. The cars are also of high quality and they give you water and sweets. Its great!
