Weather and temperature - it is all relative

During my recent skiing holiday I experienced the coldest temperatures I have ever experienced before – such as going outside when it was -21ºC and that is not counting the wind chill factor which obviously takes it far below that!  It reminded me that the next time it is -1º or -2º in Johannesburg in mid-winter I should step outside in my costume and celebrate how warm it is!  I am exaggerating of course, but I have stepped out of a house into a hot tub in a costume in -21ºC and had to close the hot tub afterwards for another minute or two with the water that was dripping all over me turning almost to ice during that time, so I will appreciate that -1º or -2º is really not that cold.

A few weeks later I was in the Cape winelands, close to Paarl, and by then it was 40 degrees plus – so a massive swing of over 60 degrees in a few weeks.

We are actually blessed with amazing weather in South Africa and Johannesburg has some fantastic weather. I cannot say that I enjoy late July/August when it has not rained for so long and I invariably get a chest infection or so, but the other 10 months of the year feature some world class weather and a lifestyle that very few places in the world offer.

I must say I love weather in South Africa but the only time that I am not so happy is during dusty months.

Best season is Autumn - not too hot - not too cold, just perfect. However the weather today has been confusing to say the least. Johannesburg has some strange weather

I have heard people say that we have the best weather in the world. I do think one does not really appreciate it until you have seen and felt other countries. My sisters moved to New Zealand recently and over there the weather is always cloudy. They have told us before that they miss the sunny days and the warm sea. We think our sea is cold but over there you can't even go in the sea and you will freeze. It all depends on what you like as well, some people just don't like the weather to be to hot or to cold or whatever the case might be. But if I had to move, I think I would really miss our weather.

SA has the best weather. We are blessed to be in such a great country

Except for the dry cold winters we sometimes get, I have to agree that South Africa has the best weather. I am a winter bay, and love autumn, feels like a fresh start. I do believe colder countries cloths and houses accommodates the weather of that country.

I also think that we are blessed with weather in South Africa. Yes just winter time is very dry but the rest of the year is amazing time. Myself I could not handle the winter in Ukraine, when my plane landed it was -28ºC and thick jacket did not make a difference!

I must agree, we are very fortunate not to have weather extremes in South Africa, although our summers can get hot, we do not experience the extreme heat other countries have to deal with and also not the extreme cold.

We are truly so blessed with weather in this country. For the most part it is quite predictable in Johannesburg and we cant really say it is terribly cold. The best part I think is that we don't have to worry too much about things like hurricanes and tornados. The worst we have is bad hail storms which cause more than enough damage I think.

I am not one for cold weather and I would have to say that winter is my least favourite time of the year! I haven't experienced temperatures as cold as that and I don’t think I’ll be willing to put myself through such an experience.

No doubt we have the best weather cold or warm. Our plans just needs to be worked around it.

I agree that July and August in Johannesburg are my least favorite of all months climate wise. It's dusty and windy and everything feels dry and cold. I prefer wet, cold weather over dry, bone chilling cold weather. But I have never experienced anything colder than -4'C and cannot comprehend -21'C! A bit of snow to make it a little more scenic may convince me to give it a try though!

I do not do not well in extremely cold conditions. I would avoid any cold destination at all costs. I don't see anything amusing about wet snow and stabbing icy winds. In my opinion that is really not a way to live. I agree that Johannesburg's weather is fantastic! I used to be a fan of the Durban climate but I have in recent years developed a dislike for humidity. Jhb has the perfect combination and I'm grateful to be able to enjoy such conditions almost all year round.

I Love South Africa's weather but even that is changing but it is definitely better then other places. It feels like i am going to die if its -1 so i don't even want to experience -21 i'll die for sure.

There is no doubt that we have great weather in South Africa, I however prefer the cold and the heat tends to get to me quite a bit! I am happy to have that crisp breeze during the winter months, it is also always easier to cover up more, in the heat, there is only so much that you can take off! I was recently chatting to my aunt, who is turning 70 this year, she told me that for the first time ever in her life she cannot wait for winter as the heat has just been too unbearable for her.

I have to say, I can see the effects of global warning on our weather patterns. Last year during the winter months, we had some cold spells but not once did I have to take out a jacket I bought many years ago that is thick and warm. There was just no need for it. Winter was not as cold as it used to be and summer is hellishly hot. I would actually love to go somewhere and experience constant snow and freezing weather just for shits and giggles.......

When I moved to Cape Town, for the first time I actually knew what HOT really was. We were in Paarl and it was 52 that day. I never got so warm in Johannesburg. South Africa really do have the best weather.

We really do have amazing weather in South Africa.I also would like to go to a country where it snows but the problem is to get used to that kind of weather. We always complain that it is either too hot or too cold We should appreciate what we have a lot more.

We are truly blessed with our weather in Johannesburg, our winter snaps are nothing in comparison to -21! Showee! However, we are feeling the effects of Global Warming and our seasons seem to be a bit blurred in that they aren't clearly distinctive, with rainy patches in Winter!

Michelle D  said:

Temperature is definitely relative to what you are used to. In South Africa we are undoubtedly more accustomed to warmer temperatures and therefore when the temperature dips, it is much more of a shock to our system as opposed to places that are frequented with cold weather.

The weather in South Africa is definitely the constant positive of living in South Africa. I have never heard anyone complain about the weather in South Africa and I think many people who are used to the weather in South Africa refrain from emigrating because of the weather. I hope this year is filled with rain to come as its never enjoyable to have allergies during the dry season.

I watched a video of a South African in Detroit a couple of days ago where it was about -1 degrees and I could feel it through my phone screen...
I love South Africa's weather! Although we all still complain when it's "too hot" or "too cold."
With me, drastic weather changes like you've mentioned in your blog would make me very ill and I'd be bedridden for a solid week!

We really do have amazing weather, even though within this past week we experienced every season in one day which was extremely strange but none the less, the days warm up and the sun shines even through the rain which can be quite beautiful.

One thing about our beautiful country is the weather! Absolutely love it! We are so fortunate, I enjoyed it the one time I snowed here but I definitely do not think I can get use to that kind of cold.

We really do have the best weather in the world, it can however get unbearably hot but I guess that's why we have ice cream and pools. it would be nice to experience snow once in a while though.

Apart from the amazing wildlife our weather is also quiet nice. I know extended family who live overseas and when they come to visit, they will walk around with short sleeve tops while the rest of us will find it necessary to wear a jersey and they always comment on how nice the weather is this side. I think for those of us who have not traveled outside of South Africa as yet we really take it for granted and have not really experience ice cold weather like those in other countries

Michelle  said:

I believe South Africans experience all four of the seasons the best. We can really not complain about anything, regarding the weather. Other Countries have freezing winter more than half of the month and other countries pray for just one drop of water again most of the time. We should appreciate what we have a lot more.

I have always heard the South Africa has the best Weather and I must say I do agree, however due to gobble warming our weather has changed a lot it rain when it shouldn't its hot in winter time its cold in summer time so I think we are lucky here with the weather but it has changed a lot.

we have our politicians, our crime rate, our unemployment & our inequality.
we also have a truly spectacular country, and yes, the weather is pleasant too.
nothing like a cold beer in the african sun.
add a braai on a rolling green lawn, and kids swimming in the pool squealing in delight.
i'm not sure it gets much better than that.
