Fancourt and The Links

The Links golf course is just outside of George in the Fancourt Resort.  It is owned by the developers of SAP Software and is rated the number one golf course in South Africa.  It is chronically difficult course to play, and I try where possible, to play there at least once a year, but I have not been there for a few years.  It is really a superb course and the resort itself is beautiful, set at the base of some low lying mountains with spectacular scenery everywhere.

There are two other courses that form a part of Fancourt, one is known as Outeniqua and the other one is called Montagu.  Montagu is allegedly number 6 in South Africa and Outeniqua is allegedly the 16th best rated course in South Africa.  In other words, right next to each other you have three of the top 20 golf courses in South Africa and so it is a wonderful resort for golf friends to go to, to play top courses day after day.  The one that disappointed me the most though is Montagu.  I think the assessment between my friends was that Montagu is in no way better than Outeniqua and it is certainly not even close to Sun City, where the Gary Player course at Sun City is rated number 4 in South Africa.  If Montagu really is number 6, then there is a massive gulf between number 4 and number 6.

My opinion is that, like Blair Atholl, which is not in great condition, Montagu needs to slide down the ratings in South Africa some more.  It is just not 10 places better than Outeniqua.  It does not mean it is a bad course, but one’s experiences can be marred by bad marshalling, when people ask you to hurry up, even though you cannot hit because there are players on the course in front of you who you will hit if you hit the ball, and all sorts of largely German golf tourists, who can barely hit a ball but are trying to charge around the place at the world’s fastest pace.  If you wanted to see what a retirement home for wealthier people in South Africa looks like, Fancourt would be a great place to start!  The vast majority of people there are a minimum of 60 years of age, but what are really astounding are the prices.  Of the houses I saw on sale the cheapest one we could find, and honestly it looked very bad in the pictures, was R9,5 million.  Most of the better looking properties range from about R20 million to R50 million with quite a few in the R35 to R50 million range.  Whatever you may say about South Africa, whether you have lost confidence in South Africa or not, there does not appear to be any limit to the property prices in exclusive estates like Fancourt or indeed Pearl Valley closer to Cape Town.

South Africa’s excellent climate results in a lengthy golfing season for local and international travellers. I am certain that despite any of the flaws detected, that, the South African setting has the potential to make any setting absolutely spectacular.

Wow this course and surrounds sound amazing. I am definitely asking the other half if he has played there and what he thinks. The property price looks ridiculous, but if you can afford it, why not.

Quite an amount to be paying for a place. I can as well understand the retirement part as well. What would be your choice of where to retire that a beautiful place such as that and the cost is high, so not anyone can afford to love there.

I am not surprised that the properties range from those prices, I suppose when you want something you want it. In all honesty one also pays for the exclusivity of such properties not forgetting the scenery and the area etc. The stand must be huge and I’m sure very fancy too.

It looks stunning. The prices for the properties is madness though but you really do find stunning properties with amazing scenery in South Africa.

It looks like a beautiful golf course amongst an amazing landscape, if not for the expense it may be enough to persuade anyone to begin playing golf.

Personally I think if a Golf course is beautiful as Fancourt and The Links, your chances to have a good score at the end of the game are better. No wonder Golf is such an expensive game. At least they maintain the locations very well.

Sounds amazing!!! Property near and around the area of the Cape is expensive. It's an expensive place to stay and even visit. I don't know much about golf courses but I do know there are a few in South Africa that is really nice and gives a golfer quite a challenge as well.

If there is one thing South Africa is not short of are the most exceptional landscapes and this is a definite for not only overseas investors but the people who potentially want to retire in comfort.

That is one thing about South Africa, we have amazing scenery and landscapes and I am sure this attracts many foreigners to invest in properties on these beautiful golf estates.

With property in South Africa you will never go wrong, golfers are enjoying their money, time and peace of mind.

I cant imagine that many South Africans would be able to afford those properties but anything that brings in foreign money is a good thing. The fact that the properties aren't suited to their price tags is not surprising as it isn't the property one is paying for but everything else.

The Fancourt is absolutely stunning! I looked at some of the pictures now and I'm totally obsessed! it is quite expensive but it definitely is a place I would love to go to.

The prices sound ridiculously high even for an estate. I can't imagine paying that much for a house and still having money left to live, let alone play golf. One would think that with our current economic state that estate prices would have lowered but I guess not.

One night at the Fancourt Hotel will cost you R4 640! At that price, I am sure that it is truly remarkable. The five-star dinning experience and breath taking views are more appealable to me, I will be sure to place it on my bucket list!

Property in and around Cape Town has always been exceptionally pricey, and it's not within most people's price ranges. I have heard of a lot of people who bought property in those areas many years ago, have been paying off a massive bond, and then when they retire, they are staying at their "holiday homes." Regardless of the bad aspects of South Africa as a whole, the properties do not seem to have taken a knock, much to the disappointment of people looking for a bargain/steal and those who own property, are smiling at the growth of their investments made in their property/ies.
