Tragic fire in Kemerovo

Kemerovo is a city in Siberia in Russia and it is where my wife grew up.  It has just had a tragic fire in a shopping mall where at least 64 people died but probably more (Russian authorities tend to cover up tragedies according to people quoted in the media).  It appears that the vast majority of children who died were not able to get out, trapped inside a burning inferno with all the fire doors and escape doors locked or closed.  Apparently, about 30 of them had the time to post messages on social media saying they may not get out or to phone relatives and tell them how much they love their parents, etc.  When you read things like that it absolutely breaks your heart and we get so many stories like this around the world these days like sub-standard factories where the employees are locked in (that is something that happened in South Africa) and buildings collapsing in India and in China.

In China of course they have a very harsh approach to these matters and the people responsible are normally, after a quick trial, executed.  That certainly takes a more serious approach to building floors and violating safety regulations.  We may say that we are more civilised than that, but certainly I think one of the problems over the years is that people who violate these types of laws, who work in buildings and close doors for their own lazy reasons or for some or other dubious reason, invariably don’t get punished to the extent they should be.  I hope all of those involved in this tragedy, and certainly the main culprits, never gets out of jail again as long as they live.  The sentences need to be harsh.  To be locked inside a shopping centre, movie theatres or children’s playground and not able to get out when a fire occurs is absolutely criminal.

One of the sadder things, when we think of how tragic this is, is how much space has been devoted in South African media to this story, which is a real tragedy compared to absolute nonsense between Australia and South Africa as to tampering with a cricket ball.  Is it really so much important to give such attention to the normal cheating in sport, which seems to happen in every sport, everyday, compared to the deaths of more than 64 people in Russia?

Newspaper editors will tell us that they are only telling us what people in South Africa are interested in, but have people all around the world lost their humanity to such an extent that a local sporting drama involving a piece of sticky tape and a cricket ball deserves more attention than tragedies from which we can and should learn, that happen overseas?  Our factories, our working places, as we have seen with Tiger Brands, are scandalous killing machines, but we allow ourselves to be diverted by silly little stories that don’t have any importance.

This is upsetting to read and think about. I can't imagine the distress and terror all these people and especially the children went through. I do hope the culprits are punished.

The world we live in is full of tragedies unfortunately and people die on a constant basis. I think most people have become numb to this as to dwell on such a thing, I think one would lose their sanity. I am very sorry to hear of the fi re and that 64 people lost their lives - it is always a waste and very sad...esp the fact that all those families and their firends have to now deal with such a tragic loss

This story breaks my heart! It saddens me to know that tragic realities such as these are not getting the necessary publicity and attention it truly deserves!

Lives aren't valuable anymore. Money / Economy seems to be more valuable then any life. I will remain to say that Money has become a God to this world. I read this story and how I feel the emotions of those parents who tried saving their children but couldn't get it right. Imagine what those parents have to feel daily, hearing their children in distress and being so helpless.

This is an extremely sad and disappointing story, and it is a major problem if building standards are not up to scratch or do not adequately accommodate the health and safety of those persons using the buildings. Although China's way of doing things may be somewhat barbaric, it must be noted that the sheer amount of people in China guarantees that if a building where to collapse or a fire where to start without adequate safety measures, the number of lives lost would be extensive. The cutting of corners could result in the negligent causing of death of another person (culpable homicide in SA) and should be punished as such.

Media is more concerned about what will sell. While the Russia fire mall story is very important the question is whether it would have sold the news papers especially when this kind of things happens often in the around the world . The ball tempering saga happened at a time when one Australian Minister was paddling lies about land reform in South Africa. The news of the ball tempering was some sort of pay back .

It is so sad... i think the worst part is getting a message or phone call from your child saying goodbye and u cant do anything about it i think that will kill a parent the fact that they know their children is in danger and they cannot do anything about that knowing their children is busy dying. That is horrific. I agree they go on about the cricket that isn't even that important. Those people died in a shopping center that a lot worse then Australia Cheating in a cricket match.

This devastating news received barely any coverage, disgracefully! Unless one was specifically making a point of checking every story that had just broken, one would not even have known about this. We see all the time that absolute rubbish stories get greater coverage, for example, the absolute devastation in Syria that everyone seems to be ignoring!

I can’t even imagen how their families must feel. It’s a terrible tragedy. With the radio only talking about the Cricket incident the last few days, I don't even think South Africa media ever mentioned this fire. People should get their priorities straight. And I agree the people Responsible for this should never see the outside of a jail again.

It is saddening that companies and people are only interested in saving costs and making money. Often they think well a fire probably won't happen so why waste money trying to prevent it or having safety measures in place. My heart goes out to all those families. I sure hope that responsibility is taken.

The media is so sensationalized that we are blinded to whats happening in the world! I read this article and it broke my heart so many people lost their lives and I agree 100% that the people that are responsible should be punished to the fullest extent not only to show other that this is completely unacceptable- but at the end of the day the have the death of 64 people on their hands.

That must have been terrible for the parents, to have your child phone you and tell you they are about to die. Shame, they must have felt so helpless. I can only imagine how heartbreaking that must have been. They say it's worse for a parent to lose a child.
The people who are careless and at fault will have to live with their conscience for the rest of their life, knowing if they just did something different things could have been ended differently. I am also a firm believer in what goes around, comes around so they will not go without punishment. It will come back to them somehow.
It's so true. They have made such a big thing about this ball tampering, it's ridiculous how they have been going on about it. They probably focus more on other things so that people don't start thinking about the real issues one can be facing.

This is so sad the way these people died more heart breaking to hear that they were aware that they could not survive from the fire, they sent smses to their families and friends, and they were stuck inside a burning shopping centre without emergency exits and could not get out of the shopping centre. I can imagine the pain the families went through.

What a tragic story! With the amount of dilapidated buildings in Johannesburg CBD, I am quite surprised that a story like this hasn't landed up on our air waves. Ten people are still listed as missing from this tragedy. "According to preliminary information, the roof collapsed in two cinemas," - quite scary to think that this could happen within any of our malls?

Jadine Richards  said:

This is the first time that I am hearing about this and it is really tragic. I agree with you completely that the consequences of such reckless and negligent conduct should be more severe. The only way people with stop to think twice and attempt to take greater care is if they know they will be held accountable and will have to answer for what they do.

I do hope that the people responsible for the death of these people will get punished. It is inexcusable that so many of the doors and fire escapes were closed or blocked. This is the type of tragedy that should have been prevented, and I hope it is an eye opener to other factories and shopping malls.

This is horrible, I can't even imagine what went through their little minds, it's the worse way to die ever. What's bothering me a lot is the fact that the doors were lock this sound so suspicious. I know I would be beside myself if my child was stuck and letting me know they love me and that they know they going to die so I can't for the life of me imagine what and how the parents are coping and going through. My heart goes out for them.

It is quite sad that our country decides to omit certain stories in our daily news reports, the fact that the cricket got more coverage than peoples lives being lost ! I assume if I watched international news I would've heard about this though...

Liz  said:

This is absolutely heartbreaking and I agree that the people responsible should be punished to the full extent. The death of these children could have been prevented by simply complying with building regulations and ensuring that safety measures are in place.

The other aspect of the media is also true, one would hear that a story like this is mentioned briefly during news headlines but if a tragedy such as this one occurred in another part of the world such as America, the media coverage would be astounding. It is sad that certain parts of the world's citizens are considered more important that others and that stories such as ball tampering are all the majority of South African people are really interested in hearing about.
