South Africa's population

It would be interesting to see what the next census shows South Africa’s population to be.  I did a bit of research on different websites and they estimate that South Africa’s current population is about 58,6 million which would make South Africa, by population, the 24th biggest country in the world.  There are a tremendous number of people that are born in South Africa everyday, approximately 3,200 births a day with about 1,500 deaths a day meaning that South Africa’s population grows every day.  That excludes the people that migrate to South Africa from Zimbabwe and various other countries.

It becomes even more important in the future, particularly with a large younger population at the moment, for the jobs market to grow because otherwise the unemployment rate is going to increase and there will be a lot of very unhappy people.  We see that in the protest at the moment where residents for example in Plettenberg Bay attacked police with bricks and stones forcing the police to get out of their cars and run away and the various Municipal protests we see all the time.  To a large extent this relates to unemployment and we need to plan for a lot more people entering the jobs market now and in the next 20 years and there would need to be jobs for them to do.

This is really scary what type of future do our children have

This is so scary! I think that the best approach here would be too start implementing communist china policies. One child rule. It is the only solution.

I would be interested to know the population count of South Africa, but I do think it must be extremely difficult to obtain the correct and accurate counts of all the people in our country especially with such a high number of births every single day.

I hope the food industries will be able to keep up, but with that said we need to start to create new job opportunities to keep up with the population count.

These stats are quite interesting to see. Also scary to think that the population grows twice more than the number of deaths.
We need to think of new ideas. New job opportunities completely. What will be a good field to go into and what will be needed in 20 years' time?
Another point to bear in mind, which others have pointed out as well - We can't only think of job creation when the foundation needs to be improved as well.

I have read the blog, I have read it in conjunction with the comments posted by discerning South African citizens. What appears to be a consistent suggestion is that somehow “Government” should fix the country’s problems. The main issue here being the enormous unemployment rate. I ask you this then, why is that a foreign national, can leave their country, come to South Africa with no resources, somehow open a small business and manage to thrive, even if it is in moderation. Yes, Government is responsible for a number of issues which only aid to aggravate the socio-economic status, such as paying grants for children, no matter how many you a citizen births into this world (seemingly encouraging more and more in order to acquire a higher subsidy). Here is an unpopular proposal, as set forth in in the fiction that is “The Purge”. Brilliant, diabolical plot, which proposes the culling (essentially) of humans. The weak will not survive. The strong will. In this scenario, I would probably not survive, but, the collective world would.

The issue of overpopulation in South Africa is a very complicated one. Our grant system is structured in such a way that some people have children to survive which just increases poverty for the next generation. It would also be in everyone's best interest to incentivize more blue collar jobs as these are more readily available to people. This is currently not being done in our country as one can see from the recent municipal strike where it was unearthed that the management levels of government were receiving a whopping 18% increase while the workers were not. People are not going to want to work if it is easier and equally as profitable to just not work.

We need to start getting the economy in order to be able to handle these stats. Its shocking to think if we dont improve there wont be much of a future for all these children

It's really scary what the unemployment rate is currently, what would it be like in a few years? every year children matriculate and need jobs and housing. When I travel to work I see a lot of new developments, flats, offices etc sometimes it feels like they going to run out of space.

With the current size of South Africa our job market needs to grow. Unemployment is just getting worse as time goes on therefore there is a lot more crime.

The South African Constitution provides for all sorts of rights - basic healthcare services, education, nutrition, shelter, social services. South Africa, a third-world county, cannot possibly provide for a population of such enormous size, which continues to grow each day. Yes, we need job creation, but we also need the education system, the healthcare services, social services and the like, to function properly to afford the growing population the ability to obtain and create more jobs.

I really think that South Africa is overpopulated already. Especially for a country that's unemployment rate is so high which makes it even more scary.

Its weird at how other countries need to get a higher birth rate and here we are overpopulated and filled to capacity - spilling over in fact. The job market is tough, had an Uber driver the other day who actually has a degree in finance, but could not find any work... I just see it getting worse if something is not done and soon...it already is bad as it is

It would be very interesting to know what the outcome will be of the next census. The other day I was watching a video on youtube, on over populated countries. In Hong Kong, a small apartment has become so expensive that they have to put cages "they call them cage homes" to fit more than 10 people in a one bedroom apartment. In these cages they have to put everything such as their clothes, food ect to try and fit everyone

I had no idea our population was that much - and this doesn't take into account all the illegal immigrants. On one hand I can understand people getting upset that perhaps foreigners are taking jobs but on the other hand some of these people from neighbouring countries are so hungry for work which makes them often so much hard working than our fellow South Africans. South African's need to prove themselves. Also our education needs to be improved because whats the point of creating jobs when we may not have educated or even semi-skilled workers. There are definitely not enough "unskilled" work. There is alot our government needs to improve on. We also need to be educated on protected sex etc. We cannot keep having babies and increasing our population if we cannot afford to have the children!

Kathryn  said:

I agree with Jolene, most of the serious issues and more specifically the socio-economic issues that South Africans face every day relates to overpopulation. I'm unsure how a country like South Africa would be able to effectively regulate a one or two child policy.

Unemployment is definitely a problem currently and it does not seem to be improving with a growing population. The issue goes straight back to government and what they are doing to remedy the situation. Every year new people are entering the job market which is putting strain on the labour market. This is not an easy issue to resolve but I believe with the right leaders, things can improve.

Jolene   said:

Most problems in our country can be related to over population. There are just too many people having children who cannot afford to care of them. Every issue from service delivery to education to employment is directly linked to the number of people in our country.

Bianca Taljaard  said:

I must agree with Dune, it would not be a bad idea to say that you can only have one or two children, once you had them you must be sterilized. The kids get no education because parents can't afford to even send them to school.

Zindy  said:

Wow scary number of the population when you think how many people are unemployed. Every day how many babies are born and everything is getting more expensive and people are loosing there jobs more regularly. This is becoming a problem in South Africa.

Dune  said:
on Friday 13-Sep-19 12:31 PM
There are so many babies born into poverty in SA and they will never know any better. It is sad to see how many people out there have child after child if they cannot even afford to take care of themselves. Perhaps we should also have a one or two child policy in Africa as they have in China, to try and control the size of our ever increasing population.

Fikile  said:

I think the is going to even more unemployed people in south africa because we are letting technology take over most of the work and that means " why should we hire you when the computer can do a better job than you? And again why should we hire you if we still have to teach you how to do the job for more than 2 weeks?". Other people are loosing hope in looking for a job because of what they see in the news and also read in the newspapers.

Jessica M  said:

This is why I push my kids everyday, because I don't want them to live in a stressful environment like this one. I want them to be employable and have good jobs by the time they leave school. I would also prefer them being out of this country too one day.

This is a serious issue that needs to be considered by government and promptly! It breaks by heart when a baby is born into this world and his/her parents are not in a position to take care of their needs.

The population is reaching a high. I think with more people being born, and over population, there will be less space to build homes and there will be less employment, there will be less resources.

Our education system is not progressing with the times, this is why fields of work are saturated and keeping us from becoming as advanced as China etc. Every student who's graduated is fighting for a job that is no longer relevant or available. Immigrants from 3rd world countries are coming here just to make ends-meet in low income jobs South African's don't want to do, but complain about them taking their jobs.

A high population not only effects the unemployment rate due to there not being enough jobs, but it also heavily effects our environment. South Africa's statistics as a whole is terrifying.

It doesn't matter how many kids you have, you can never say what the future holds. I wish people can stop with that! I know of rich people who's kids don't have an income and also know of poor parent's and very successful children. South Africa is really at it's worst now. There's a future for everyone, it all depends on YOU!

Bianca N  said:

Our unemployment rate is so concerning. We have such a big population but not nearly enough jobs available to get our economy growing. In stead, more and more people live in poverty and are not able to have even the most basic necessities. I truly hope that this issue can be resolved,

Lucretia  said:

I honestly think that people do not care about the future of their children and whether or not their children will have jobs in time to come. I once asked a lady who was onto baby number 4, how she copes because they are so expensive, her reply was, "Zuma will look after my baby". What people fail to see is, if there are 30 000 jobs only and 60 000 people, there will be a high unemployment rate. We are not creating jobs as quickly as what the population is growing and no matter what, some people will fail to see that. I remember growing up hearing, "small families have big dreams".

Michelle Smillie  said:
on Friday 06-Sep-19 07:56 AM
Yes, the government needs to spend more time on its people, making sure they are in situations to take care of themselves. We need more jobs so that poverty can go down - it is a proven fact that poverty is linked to crime and providing people with means to take care of themselves are the only true way of resolving the problems for good.
