read an interesting article recently indicating that the cost of petrol in South Africa has increased by 33% since 2012. The article makes the point that the international oil price is exactly as expensive now as it was in 2012.
The reason that South Africans are paying more for petrol has got nothing to do with the oil price. It is all about - according to the article - the increase in all of the taxes during that time, some of which of course is related to the R1,98 per litre that goes to the Road Accident Fund. A lot of the increase is related to the general taxes that the Government raises on petrol which stood at R1,97 a litre in 2012 and are now at R3,52 a litre. This is all despite what has happened with the Rand, which has also weakened during the time, because oil prices are actually lower now than they were in 2012, so despite the weakening of the Rand during that time South Africa pays less for a barrel of oil, in Rands, now than we did in October 2012!

The cost of living is extremely high. With so many people being unemployed and the costs of daily necessities increasing all the time, its difficult for consumers to manage their living expenses. I was also under the impression that our increases in petrol was directly linked to the oil prices but nevertheless whether you are driving or use public transport, it has become a hefty expense over the past couple of years. I remember a time when an increase was expected, many would rush to petrol stations to fill up their cars but I've noticed a decline in that. Is it really worth it taking into account all the increases over the past year alone!

Sadly, petrol is something we all need. Although we continue to complain, we all need fuel in our cars. The fact is, there has been serious mismanagement up to now. This could be one of the ways to get our country back on track. It will take a long time, but at least it's a start.

the figures show that even if we hear about petrol price decrease that does not mean that petrol price stays low. the increase of the petrol price percentage since 2012 and the price of a litre in 2012 and that of a litre now there is no sign that petrol price ever decrease

It is a bit hefty on the pocket when petrol increases, especially at the end of the month. However, South Africa is at a point where it needs such high taxes to try and fix this place and petrol is a pretty good way to go about it as it is inclusive of everyone driving (you don't get to choose whether to pay tax on your petrol or not).

It's interesting to see how many other factors play a role in the price of petrol other than the international oil price. I understand a few of the additional taxes being levied on the petrol price but the general taxes raised by the government, over and above what South Africans are taxed on their earnings in any event, is was begrudges me. A 33% increase over 7 years is almost close on the average person's annual salary increase for that period of time. It goes to show where a large chunk of any individual's increase in salary goes towards. And that is if you're lucky enough to be employed! I cant imagine how those without jobs manage to keep up with the ever-increasing costs of living.

This is interesting to know, obviously our price will not be linked to the oil price as our government just adds all their extra tariffs they want and not thinking about the consumers paying for the fuel.

So we are paying increased amounts for petrol due to our government’s mismanagement of funds. Once the petrol price increases everything else goes up as well.

Despite attempts in convincing people public transport is more efficient. Is it really? I have heard a few stories of what it costs and was actaully surprised I think the best way would be to club together in a lift club to save. Somehow we all need means of travelling. We rely on fuel so we pay what it costs regardless of it increasing.

The petrol prices fluctuate so much in one year. One moment it is at an all time high just to be decreased with a few cents and to be increased again. One cannot keep up.

If South Africa Rand getting weaker every day the cost of leaving, petrol price, rates and taxes will go up.
I would agree with Mathilda that we do not have a choice, we all need petrol to get to work! It is too far and not safe to drive bicycle or walk. So yes, we will have to pay the price is given to us, no one cares if we all happy or not

South Africans are being taken advantage of through fuel. If there were better alternatives to driving then we would utilize those! Yes the Gautrain is there but that caters to a very limited group.Our public bus and taxi system is in shambles so we are forced to drive and have no recourse when we are robbed through the ever increasing fuel price.

This petrol price is going to make some of us be afraid of buying cars because if the petrol can go up that means the insurance will go up as well and that will be killing more than our savings because the food will also go up. This is all hard to think about.

I think most of the petrol increase is probably to put more money in the pockets of some Government employees and of course to help the Road Accident Fund with their debt - still can't see how that is our problem and why we should pay for it but that is the way little old South Africa works I guess.

I agree with that petrol is one of the necessity's that on needs as you have to get around and its quite unsafe to get around on foot, you need a car. Its been made very difficult for us when these prices are pushed up.

That's the thing with the government increasing petrol and food prices. They know we cannot go without it they know no matter what the cost people will still buy it because we need it. It's not a luxury a person can cut and life without, it's a necessity. It's a sad reality that the rand does not have even half of the value it used to have.

Everything is becoming expensive. I cant wait till electrical cars come out in SA i think it would be a lot cheaper to drive with one of them.One of my friend came from UK and she is going back there she just got her Visas and according to her everything is a lot cheaper that side and money has more value there.

Unfortunately petrol and food prices are the first things to go up when our government needs more income somewhere. If anything happens, we pay for it with the prices of necessary items increasing, something we can of course not avoid. It is shocking though to see that the price for oil itself has not actually increased. I always thought that this was part of the petrol price increases, now I know better.

How amazing that our country is at an economic turmoil because of the higher power's decisions. We are paying tax everywhere. Surprisingly we are not paying tax (yet) for every breath we take. Back in 2012 the petrol price was expensive, agreed, but at least it was not daylight robbery with other products. Now the petrol is still expensive but look at cost of living, it is ridiculously hard to save money or put money in investments when everything has increased.

half of your salary goes to petrol because you must drive everywhere cause walking everywhere will get you killed and robed.
Lift clubs are best, you guys help each other out with petrol and it really helps a lot at the end of the day.

Yip, the petrol price is worked out in a lot of factors like, Cost of transporting fuel inland, Petroleum pipeline levy. and Customs and excise levy these are to name with the above factors. We really need our economy to grow and our government to start thinking of South Africa and not themselfs

This is crazy, Petrol price goes up, then everything else goes up.. This is why I stay home so much as the amount that we spend to enjoy life is getting so extremely expensive I can not deal. Wish we can just live in the times where R5.00 could by you almost a whole month of groceries.
