SAA cancels flights

It is not surprising that South African Airways is finally cancelling flights.  It after all already has Mango flying to a number of the destinations and with its financial problems things have to change.  The fact that there are no longer any flights to destinations like Durban, East London and Port Elizabeth though does sound rather dramatic and only the profitable Johannesburg to Cape Town route will continue.  A lot of the flights to other destinations were not full and there is simply no basis to have continuous routes to places like Luanda, Munich and Sao Paolo.  South African Airways has been a continuous money sucking machine for taxpayers in South Africa and for years we have been promised whatever the most recent bailout has been would finally sort out the problems – then the next year we are again expected to pay out more towards it.

Wouldn't it be wiser to invest in something worth the time and money? Stop throwing money into a sinking ship. All those bail-outs and what's happening with SAA now?

How many times has SAA been bailed out? we now have bigger problems to face in our country,I personally think SAA should shut their doors permanently,

SAA is under involuntary business rescue, that is normally the beginning of the end. We must stop bailing SAA out, it is a sinking ship. We can use the funds to create new jobs.

If SAA makes it out of the shut down i will be very surprised - They were already experiencing turmoil before Corona and now its adding salt to the wound. Hopefully they make it through.

I think SAA is going to close down once and for all. Our country needs to Focus on Eskom to keep the power going , our health systems etc. They should stop bailing SAA out

There are more important things our country needs to make more provisions for, such as health care and education. we need to stop baling SAA out.

I have also read that the CEo of SAA is stepping down, stop putting people in charge that dont know what they are doing. SAA has already had a bail out and it still sinking, its simple, bad management

Ashleigh  said:

Besides for what we paid in as taxpayers, SAA was more expensive then British airways on most of their flights anyway. This pandemic could set some things in stone.

Zindy  said:

Wow no flights to our local destinations for our own countries airline. Scary Taught. I wonder how they are going to cope with this lock down surely they will have to close their doors now...

Nicolle  said:

Prishani is so right! Just discontinue, stop, close SAA. It is a never-ending pit of money squandering. Instead the monies could be redeployed to viable, necessary things like ESKOM.

Kayla  said:

I think that even now with the pandemic that is at hand , SAA will need to close its doors. This is going to affect so many flight lines. This virus needs to be contained and unfortunately due to international travel and entering back into the country, it has brought a catastrophe.

Dasanya  said:
on Thursday 19-Mar-20 08:27 AM
We are just pouring money into a sinking ship. These bailouts aren't improving SAA and if anything, government is trying to hold onto an entity that has no prospects of recovery. With travel restrictions being imposed, it will definitely not help SAA in any way.

Thabitha  said:
on Thursday 19-Mar-20 07:39 AM
When you own a business some times it good to admit when things are not going well and instead of wasting more money trying to rebuild it just close and start a new one. how many times SAA was bailed? and the problem is not going away

Shristi  said:

I think its time that SAA closes its doors. There are so many other ways that the money that is given to SAA to bail them out can be used towards. I think their cashflow problems are just going to get worse especially with the COVID 19 virus. People are scared to travel and will not unless really desperate.

Chante  said:
on Wednesday 18-Mar-20 08:30 AM
This so true, not surprising at all that SAA is cancelling flights. It is truly unfair toward taxpayers in South Africa to keep having to throw money at the SAA.

Prishani  said:

I think it is time we bid farewell to SAA! There are a lot of better things our country can be investing in at this time!

Brumilde Cronje  said:

They are supposed to get a bail out from the government. again how about we put people in place that can actually run a place, that actually know what they are doing, or just sell to a private person, so that the SA people can stop paying for this

Tamaryn  said:
on Tuesday 17-Mar-20 09:05 AM
Government has surely got to see that SAA is beyond saving. All of that bail-out money is much needed in other sectors such as education and health and it certainly would have benefited those sectors more. SAA was mismanaged by a friend of the former president and all we continue to do is bail them out time and time again.

Kayla  said:

I agree , this is very true. SAA is a sucking money machine. Its no surprise since its an south african airline. Luckily there is other safer and more affordable airlines to fly with.

Roxanne  said:

This is not a shock, i know that with South Africa you never know what is working and what not working. Lets hope that this gets better.

Melissa  said:

This doesn't surprise me at all, with SA you never know. Lets hope this gets sorted out asap

South African Airways has already issued notice to all 4 700 of its employees that it intends to begin consultations on retrenchments in Cape Town.
A reduction in route flow as well as the airline's fleet were unavoidable, and apart from cutting staff, salaries could also be reduced.
SAA has stacked up losses of R26 billion over the past six years and was placed in voluntary business rescue in December.
The business rescue team said they were proposing a fundamental restructuring to enable SAA to function as a sustainable African airline and the current structure did not allow for this.

Nicolene  said:

It is definitely not surprising at all that SAA is finally cancelling flights and yet it is so unfair towards taxpayers to give more money to the SAA and they keep on making promises, but they don't sort anything out. Corruption like you won't believe.

Kathryn  said:
on Friday 06-Mar-20 05:28 PM
Given the option, I never choose to fly with SAA. Bankrupt airlines aren't likely to service and maintain their fleet. The company has such a bad reputation with South Africans, and as you say, SAA has been a continuous money sucking machine. The business rescue plan should definitely be an interesting read - when they decide to publish same.

Zandelee  said:
on Friday 06-Mar-20 05:24 PM
Interesting. This however has caused airlines such as Flysafair and Mango to be overbooked causing lots of delays.

Claudia B  said:
on Friday 06-Mar-20 05:01 PM
This is definitely true, every time its a different story they come up with and we just need to pay more and nothing positive is happening.

Ziyanda  said:

I agree with Alexis, the strike added to the financial problems of SAA. I just want this bailing out of state owned companies to come to an end. I really think they have been given too many chances to change their ways.

Courtney  said:
on Friday 06-Mar-20 04:12 PM
I wish we could here some positive news somewhere, especially with this Coronavirus.....Kulula is my favorite to fly with. Sad that everything has to stop and no one knows when things will get back to normal again.

Karien  said:
on Friday 06-Mar-20 02:15 PM
Very true.
I read that the liquidation of SAA will most likely result in the loss of about 9000 jobs. Gordhan is hoping for the reinstatement of SAA routes, but the SAA business rescue practitioners, with whom the decision lies, refrains from commenting on the reinstatement of SAA routes.
Corruption and maladministration is to blame for another failed state owned enterprise.

Alexis  said:
on Friday 06-Mar-20 12:56 PM
Their downfall came when they decided to strike like they did. It caused more harm, and it was a wake up call as well. They run at a loss and we the people are tired of bailing them out, they run at a loss every year, and cannot get themselves out of that rut.

Lucretia  said:

SAA has been a bane in most taxpayers lives for quite a while now. I wish they would just close the airways because it is an endless pit that our money is being thrown into. I, for one, have not flown SAA in many many years, in fact, when i went overseas i flew every other airline but SAA. Do we need our own airway.........................i don't think so.

Victoria  said:
on Friday 06-Mar-20 11:32 AM
It is really unfair to taxpayers in South Africa to keep having to give more and more money for SAA. This is a serious issue and needs to be sorted out, South Africa can't keep giving bailouts.

Michelle Smillie  said:
on Friday 06-Mar-20 10:52 AM
To be honest, I do not know why people choose to fly with SAA. Everytime we've needed to fly somewhere it has been with Mango or Kulula. Perhaps there is a difference in the service on board, but for the price difference I would not choose SAA. Perhaps that is just me, but we will soon see how many people has really relied on SAA because the other airlines should then fill up, and flights become fully booked, very quickly if they have to cater for a lot of people who used to rely on SAA.

Joyce  said:

It sounds like SAA cancelling flights was a best decision

Clare  said:
on Friday 06-Mar-20 09:54 AM
They are extremely expensive and they also always Striking so i am not surprised to the flights being Cancelled. The only worry is the Jobs that can be lost due to this. the Unemployment Rates are extremely high and we need to keep people working

Jessica M  said:

I personally think they should sell the planes to places like Mango and them and give up. Every year it's something new with SAA. Clearly they paying their staff more than they should be doing.

Megan  said:
on Friday 06-Mar-20 08:59 AM
It's really tragic to think about, there's a lot of doom and gloom these days and a lot of people are jobless. I wish our country wasn't so deep in corruption as it is and we were a country others could relied on. We are hard workers in SA but there's a lack of something. Everyone works for themselves and not the betterment of the country, in all this time with the coronavirus going around we could've had job creation i.e masks, gloves, A CURE etc but we're too focused on other countries doing that. What an ideal situation would be is, us being self sufficient and not having to rely so heavily on other countries to do the work.

fikile  said:
on Friday 06-Mar-20 08:35 AM
SAA should just shut down, we have bigger problems to worry about, we can't keep taking the countries money to help corrupt companies. We have to many companies that need this money and that are going to help the country grow.

Melissa van Tellingen  said:
on Friday 06-Mar-20 07:43 AM
I agree with David. I suppose they kept on trying and trying with absolutely no avail. My concern is all those people losing their jobs and all those families living without that income.

sandra  said:
on Friday 06-Mar-20 07:38 AM
Everywhere you look corruption is there. Never mind flights being cancelled, this is more than just that, people are losing their jobs and thus creating an even higher unemployment rate.

david  said:
on Friday 06-Mar-20 07:16 AM
i understand the government's desire to keep SAA going - it employs a lot of people. wouldn't it be cheaper though to simply shut down SAA, but continue to pay the staff their salaries. certainly, they would cost us money, but certainly way less than if they were actually at work making disastrous decisions. a win win situation if ever there was.
