Trump prepares America for deaths

It is always fascinating to watch politicians try to manipulate and prepare people for what is coming.  In this case Donald Trump of course only a few weeks ago was saying there were 15 cases in America and it would soon be down to zero.  He congratulated himself on the speedy action he had taken, even though he has been slow to react on everything.  He is not the only leader who was slow to react – South Africa and many other countries should have closed off their flights a lot sooner and warned citizens to come back within a day or two or stay overseas. They reacted slowly and that helped to spread the disease internationally.

After that, frequent references were made by Trump and the television channel that promotes his standpoint, namely Fox News, that this disease is almost exactly the equivalent of influenza and they don’t understand the fuss that the rest of the media is making. That ignores the fact that firstly you have a vaccine for flu and actual medication that generally assists with treating it.  Then we heard wildly inflated death numbers alleging that 120,000 Americans die a year from flu, when in fact the real number is approximately 34 000 to 65 000 per year on CDC figures for the last 2 years.

It took until Sunday for the Trump administration to prepare America for the fact that there would probably be 100,000 deaths and possibly even 200,000 from Covid-19. He stuck to 100 000 and his medical adviser floated the 200 000 figure.  Of course, now that the entire story of saying that the cases would disappear to zero, or that it was the same as influenza, is proving to be another lie, the propaganda machine sprung into action rather quickly and the new version says if Trump had done nothing, as if any leader of a country would do nothing, 2,2 million Americans would have died.   In other words, the new theme is if 100,000 people die, it is not so bad, because Donald Trump took such decisive action and was such a great leader that he stopped 2,2 million people from dying which is obviously based on assuming that a leader of a country seeing this unfold in front of them decided to do absolutely nothing and not ask people to keep a safe social distance.  It also obviously ignores the fact that they are simply implementing and copying, to a large extent, the steps that China took, even if not as drastic – which is probably why it spread more easily through America and European countries – because they did not take the drastic action that China did in Wuhan.  In other words, he hasn’t done anything new, come up with any amazing idea or anything else – he has just implemented some of the steps China took – but more slowly and less strictly on a bit by bit slow basis.

It is nevertheless, however tragic this whole story ends up being, fascinating to watch people deny that it is serious, then to try and compare it to the flu and when they finally, weeks later, start to realise their mistakes and the extra people that will die due to the slow way they have acted, suddenly change their entire story!   That is literally how he tried to present it repeatedly during a press conference on Sunday, while of course as usual berating the media, accusing them of reporting false stories and, as he always does, claiming that they are failing and losing money.  In fact, the New York Times, one of his favourite newspapers to attack, is doing better financially and has more subscribers to its website now than it did before he became President, so even those allegations are simply not true.

The saddest thing for America though is that people generally choose to watch the propaganda that they want, and those that watch Fox News, presumably with an uncritical mind, will believe what they are told.  I say with an uncritical mind, because it obviously requires them to erase from their memory the fact that only a few weeks ago they were told, “When you have 15 people and the 15 within a couple of days is going to be down to close to zero, that is a pretty good job we’ve done.”  The tragedy about all of this is for those who naively watch one channel and who might have been able to take more steps sooner to prepare themselves against this – they did not, because the President of America and the TV channel that supports every story he makes - minimised the seriousness of this disease.

I think that the reason why this virus is able to spread so quick is that people to not take it serious or somehow believe that they will not get it. For instance, I recently heard an old man ask if the person who was telling him to put on a musk, if he had seen someone who has died from the disease besides on television. The guy had no answer for him and he then said he will not put it on.

I think congratulations before the disaster problem resolved is not a good idea. I think corona virus has been undermined since it's symptoms are similar to that of a flu, then the seriousness and danger of the disease it's been ignored

I sometimes wonder why trump has not decided to call of a more dramatic approach to the Covid-19 in America. The stats are shocking. Yes people will die, but should you not try and prevent as much as possible .

This is clear example of how ignorant Donald Trump is. He hardly ever takes accountability for any of it. We should be thankful for the way our President has handled this whole pandemic. Although we are a third world country with not nearly as much infrastructure to deal with the pandemic our country has dealt with it much better than America.

I must admit i am very shocked at Trumps last statement about injecting the disinfects into your body as a treatment. This has caused many problems now with people trying this idea. Sarcastic or not this was a terrible statement to release as people are desperate and will try anything. run your country and not your mouth Trump.

'I don’t take responsibility at all”
those were Trumps words on March 13.
Those words will probably end up as the epitaph of his presidency, the single sentence that sums it all up.
Trump now fancies himself a “wartime president.” How is his war going? By the end of March, the coronavirus had killed more Americans than the 9/11 attacks. By the first weekend in April, the virus had killed more Americans than any single battle of the Civil War. By Easter, it may have killed more Americans than the Korean War. On the present trajectory, it will kill, by late April, more Americans than Vietnam. Having earlier promised that casualties could be held near zero, Trump now claims he will have done a “very good job” if the toll is held below 200,000 dead.

I have been told that I suffer fools badly and I cant deny that but this is a prime example of when ignorance is dangerous. On another note, if Fox news reported that dinosaurs created the virus in an underground laboratory as part of a CIA experiment, the vast majority of viewers would blindly absorb this as part of their calcified and ignorant belief system.

This is most probably the hardest time to be a leader of a country and it is not a position I would want to be in. I do think that it is always safer to take pre-emptive steps especially when it comes to saving people. I think one must always make informed decisions based on facts especially at a time like this! It is very unfortunate that people were mislead.

Kayla  said:

Trump is being ignorant. And ignorance is what kills. Unfortunately for him, this virus although has a lot of symptoms that are like flu, is nothing like flu. If he is stating such a wild statement why not then suggest giving flu vaccines to everyone? Problem solved right? No, COVID-19 is a different strand, one even scientists are trying to understand and trying to create a new vaccine for. This virus is going to take a long time to recover from and its sad to see the numbers for death rates due to it.

It is sad to see how leaders such as Trump are using propaganda to influence their population. We rely on these people in power to guide us yet in such serious times, a country's economy becomes more important than the health of its citizens. I applaud Cyril for taking the decisions he has so far although it will result in severe repercussions for our economy.

Ashleigh  said:

Yes all Presidents are worried about the economy but would you have economy anyway if people die. I must be honest that I am proud of Cyril Ramaphosa and his approach to this. I don't believe it is easy to be in the shoes of most presidents right now. I also don't believe the South African Statistics are right and seem far too low but even on those low numbers our president has kept the lockdown for his people to fight this battle and it shows care.

Megan  said:

People need to start using their common sense here because obviously their President is not. These are stressful and scary times, and the one person you wish to be calm is your president, but he needs to be honest with himself and his people. This is very serious, I mean basically the whole world is on lockdown?!

I watched this the other day on the news. There is really no way yet to fight this virus yet. I do agree he knew all along and tried to make out as if it wasn't going to affect the American's as bad. But now he can't deny what is actually happening.

It is truly fascinating that Trump could down play such a serious virus and compare it to flu which is not even remotely as dangerous as Covid-19. And, I truly feel sorry for all the Americans who chose to listen to Trump because I believe they were definitely caught off guard by the absolute destruction this virus has caused globally.

Claudia B  said:

I would definitely agree with Tersia on this one, so many people are infected by this virus and it's scary to think how fast it spread over the world and how many people have died from this virus that we have noting to help us if we have it. Not a big fan of D Trump to be honest.

Alexis  said:
on Friday 03-Apr-20 12:22 PM
We are standing at over a million people infected at this point in time, and that is scary. USA being at no 1 with a quarter of that million. I understand that the economy if very much affected by this, but as Courtney stated in a previous blog, what does it matter if no one can actually work.

I am trying my hardest not to stress out by the numbers that have been reflected to date...however, my concern is that SA can only do so much in one day, and therefore our stats are not accurate just as yet.

It will all get fairly worse before it gets any better.

Trump has always put the US economy first. His funding comes from big business and he will protect their interests above all others. Trump is a puppet. There are wealthy and self serving men pulling all the strings. My opinion is that if the only news you are watching is Fox News then I think you've set yourself up to hear what you want to hear. Trump is great, guns are great, feminism is evil and Covid-19 is not so bad. People don't watch Fox news for its accuracy, they watch it so that they can have a "bona fide" source to back up their conservative and sometimes outright ridiculous views.

Tersia  said:

Stats don't lie! I have been keeping a close eye on this COVID-19 tracker and how America has jumped - is just scary!! Can they not see what is happening? It frustrates me to see how people think this is just nothing - maybe in a few years this will be like another normal flu - when we have a vaccine for this but for now this is quite a serious virus spreading throughout the world. I have even noticed people in South Africa thinking this a joke and that they are immune to this virus. I just hope those people are not going to be the reason our lock down get's extended to longer!

This virus has no boundaries. Being ignorant and thinking that the virus won't effect you, or your country, or people of a particular race is not the way to go. Listen to the experts and the advice of health care professionals.

Oh my word! To be honest... I am definitely not a big fan of Trump, but let's rather keep it there. A lot of people didn't take this "pandemic" seriously and that is why the Government reacted slowly and the virus kept on spreading. Once this virus hits informal settlements then it's going to be way worse. I still cannot believe that some people think that COVID-19 will only effect the rich people and that is probably why they don't stick to the rules and regulations, because they think they will never get this virus. We must always keep up our personal hygiene and not just when there's a pandemic.

Nicolle  said:

This whole "Pandemic" and the general response thereto by various Governments (not all of them) reminds me of the Temple Grandin technique. There used to be needless suffering by these creatures which are meant to feed us. That is, until Temple Grandin developed a more humane manner in leading the cows to slaughter. Gandin designed curved corrals, which she adapted with the intention of reducing stress, panic, and injury to the animals being led to slaughter. My point? Some Governments or their administrations have done the same, misleading, misdirecting, this keeps humans calm.

This is shocking, Trump denied the potential threat of the virus on 28 February 2020 and called it a hoax, after he was warned by his administration of the dangers of the virus, and now he is taking it serious. I believe he could have acted more swiftly but compared to Barack Obama back in October 2009, with the H1N1 virus who only declared a state of emergency after 1000 deaths, Trump did a good job at taking action after only 40 deaths on 13 March 2020. I think in our case here in South Africa, Ramaphosa made the right decision, I just don't think that the South African government can enforce the lockdown as the SANDF and SAPS do not have the man power, equipment or skills seeing that most of our citizens are not complying.

Victoria  said:
on Thursday 02-Apr-20 02:57 PM
Trump needs to open his eyes and stop denying the facts that are in front of him. Covid-19 is still going to claim many lives but it is the sad truth of this and we all just need to stick together. We all need to follow the rules that have been set out and keep up our personal hygiene. Make sure we only go out the the shops if it is very necessary.

Nikita  said:

Unfortunately the death toll in South Africa is going to be a tragedy in itself as well because we are living amongst such poverty and malnourished people. These are also the people that do not have the means to successfully "socially distance" themselves because of their living conditions. Never mind the high HIV/AIDS rates we also have in this country which leaves people with already compromised immune systems a death target.

Lucretia  said:

Donald Trump is an idiot. He shoots his moth off all the time and most of the time nothing but garbage comes out of it. The sad thing is, it was said that if the people had to vote again, they would probably vote him in again.......what is wrong with the american people???

Michelle Smillie  said:
on Thursday 02-Apr-20 11:37 AM
I have seen the effects of people blindly believing what they are told in South Africa as well. Just a few days ago there was a post circulating on Facebook that COVID-19 killed 40 000 people in the past week whereas 9 million abortions took place. We all know that the abortion rate is high, but certainly not more than 1 million a day. The real statistic is closer to 125 000 a day. Then, of course, people use such fake statistics to say that COVID-19 is not that bad.

This shows clearly that these people only see what they want to see and hear what they want to hear. If they paid closer attention to all news channels, they would have seen how the health workers are experiencing this and that there have been, from Italy, that say that the worst thing about this disease is seeing the way poeple die - struggling for breath, fear in their eyes, being alone and compeltely helpess. I recall an Italian nurse saying that she feels liek she is in a war-zone. So, okay, Italy is on a different level, but there is no guarantee that it cannot and will not get to that extent anywhere else and it is certainly not to be taken lightly.

Melandre'  said:
on Thursday 02-Apr-20 09:46 AM
The sad reality is that there are far more people that want to hear beautiful lies in comparison to the harsh truth, this is why propaganda exists and blooms in times of crisis. Trump has allowed to happen what will take place, whether it be a devastating 100,000 or 200,000, I'm not even nonplussed that Trump has managed to turn deaths into a win. A round of applause to another astonishing act by the dimwitted bigot. Hopefully citizens were smart enough to take necessary precautions to a larger extent than what their beloved president had proposed, surely other channels broadcasting the reality of things in Wuhan and Italy brought them about what was truly taking place.

Flu is Nothing compared to the Corona Virus and the scary fact is that people don't care if they get it or not. So they don't stay home they still go out partying and coming in close contact with people. They might not be showing symptoms and make everyone around you sick and its reality that people die from this virus its not joke.

Bianca Niemann   said:

i think we were not going to have this problem if only our president didn't ask for the people that were at china to come back home because now the is a deadly virus, he should have left them the until they were cleared and then bring them home. Donald trumps prediction may have given people some hope but also didn't keep them safe because they though that they are safe. I think Donald was just trying to keep the people calm about the situation
