Haircuts - will there be a stampede?

I know that a lot of ladies’ love to have their hair done once a month.  I think amongst the less serious implications of Covid-19 will be the pent-up demand to get an appointment with one’s hairdresser when they all start working again!  I can imagine the literal war there would be to try and get bookings once the hairdressers are back.  As it is, I was scheduled to get my hair cut, and it is already looking ridiculous, but I am obviously not going to get a cut in the next three weeks and who knows after that how soon it will actually take to get an appointment?  Before anybody complains, yes, I am well aware that that is one of the trivial effects – although of course with the loss of income to all of those hairdressers in the meantime is certainly not trivial to them and as with many others who are now out of work.

It is really bad for the small businesses, not having an income is bad. However, once everything is back to normal they will have a lot of customers especially the Hairdressers.

I feel so sorry for the small business that can not operate during this lock down. I can just imagine the overflow of bookings and longer hours for the hairdressers.

I am sure that if they really want to still earn a living they will make a plan - like the alcohol and cigarettes that are being sold "underground". People will make a way if they really need to, but if they have been obedient to the rules they will surely work early and late nights for their first few weeks and not just to accommodate their clients but to try and get back what they have lost. My heart breaks for all those who are unable to get their businesses going in this times.

I can only imagine how they are suffering with no business at the moment. There will be an overload of people going to them when they are open. So it could be a problem to.

Going to the salon is the last thing on my mind, I only go out of my house if I really have to, and when I do I take all the precautions needed, I try to avoid people as much as possible

I am sure there will be a few people with a few bad hair days until they re-open, we all hope that they will be able to open soon. Worst case scenario if they do not open soon we will have to watch a few tutorials on how to cut hair. Although, I would rather just wait for a proper hairdressers to cut my hair.

We had a very easy life before the lock down, and this all we took for granted.

I Actually asked my mother if she could cut my little one's hair, its starting to look bad. I hear some of the people are open again but not sure. Its the little things people dont normally look at when there is a lockdown or limitations in place

Hairdressers and beauty salons are going to be super busy after this lockdown for sure! It is sad to know that due to this pandemic alot of small businesses would have closed down as they were unable to meet their monthly expenses and pay salaries.

I would agree with Patrick! No hair no problems, there will be nothing to style anymore!
Oh well, so long I am trying to convince my girls for me to cut their hair, they both refusing after last my hairdressing skills :)

Hairdressers will no doubt be inundated with clients and appointments. No doubt, those ever-elusive Saturday appointments are going to be even more difficult to obtain once the lockdown has been lifted.

I have to agree with most, its mostly men who is suffering a lot more that women. My husband complains almost every day. I have to cut my son's hair the other day myself because it was so long it reached his eyes. Luckily it was not the first time i have cut his hair I've been doing it quiet a few times. My husband on the other hand does not trust easily and is so afraid I might mess up.... on the other hand, i think nails salons are going to be just as busy if not more busier than hair salons.

I am not really one for the hairdresser but I Can Imaging what the waiting list would look like after the lock down, my son has been crying for a haircut for the past week and this is all he is looking forward to a haircut ant the Barber.

I personally think that it will be one of the industries that will be flustered after the lockdown. I already moved my appointment twice! Hopefully there wont be another extension because then i will have to take measures into my own hands and I am not too sure how that is going to turn out

Daniella  said:

It seems as though men are suffering a lot more with not being able to get a hair cut - they maintain their haircut more often than women. however I think once everything reopens everyone (if they are able to) will want to spoil themselves.

Honestly, I think it's more the men that will be more inclined to get haircuts after the lockdown. They are more in need of that service. Don't they generally cut their hair every 2-3 weeks?
For women, I think it's more In terms of pampering I guess, but that is a very small group of women. Okay, also those always dyeing their hair.

I wonder how the Nail salons will look though. And if people will resort to staying "natural" after the lockdown or if there will be a flood of people there too...

The beauty industry has definitely been affected...

Prishani  said:

This industry is definitely one of the industries that will bloom after lock down. Even for beauticians with woman, I know a few are already trying to organize their bookings with the clients trying to accommodate everyone.

Kendall  said:

We will definitely be seeing everybody's natural hair color when the lockdown regulations have been lifted! The hairdressers will at least be making up for all their lost income during this time when they are flooded with appointments after lockdown.

I am not one to visit hairdressers very often but it just happened to be during lockdown that I noticed a visit to the hairdresser is needed soon! I would imagine this to be a dilemma for many men who rely heavily on barbers to have their hair cut often. I also just don't think I would be one to just rush into places to have things done as soon as the lockdown is lifted.

Ashleigh  said:

I can only imagine how business is going to be for the hairdressers once lockdown is uplifted and their diaries may be crazy. I don't however see how people are not going to be nervous too after this whole pandemic. It may change the way people think going forward.

My neighbour is an absolutely talented hairdresser who has worked at Carlton and done her masters. It not great the loss of income that she is experiencing but during the lock down her clients are phoning and begging her to come and do their hand. How crazy is that? So you can just imagine the huge waiting list to get ones hair did once the lockdown is lifted. We should not be worrying about what our hair looks like because we all look equally rough during this period :)

Megan  said:

I feel more men will be affected by a "barber" lockdown than woman. Many hairdressers are probably suffering, for now but agreed, after this lockdown people will be flooding the entrances of salons and barbers.

I can't wait to go to the hairdresser again, at least I'm going every 3rd month. I feel so sorry for everyone who's in this kind of possession and can't work at all. Hopefully this will all be over soon and everything back to normal. Everyone should just stay at home for now!

Chante  said:

This is absolutely true, hairdressers and other similar businesses such as beauty salons etc, are going to be bombarded with all of the appointments and calls that are going to be streaming in after this lockdown is lifted. My personal hairdresser found a smart way to keep her business afloat during this time, she is selling vouchers with specials which last up to 6 months from now - which I think isn't a bad idea at all.

Claudia B  said:

There are so many careers / jobs out the affected. It is quite sad. But, then again, your health is more important.

Though i agree wholeheartedly with you in the fact that people will be lining up to get back to normal.

Funny thing though, it will not be the same after everything has died down.

I was thinking about this the other day when my mother phoned me to say she was shocked that she could not buy hair colour at the shop. I tried to explain that this is not an essential product, but of course to her it is, given that she can't visit the hairdresser during this time. I feel for hairdressers now as their income is going to take a big knock, as well as for all those employed in other capacities at the various salons. On the other hand, I'm happy to take this time to give my hair a good break from the hair dryer and give it some TLC.

I just cut my own hair most of the time. Men's hair is a bit more complicated, but if you have clippers and someone brave enough to cut it, it's not too hard provided you don't want anything fancy.

Bianca Niemann   said:
on Friday 03-Apr-20 10:02 AM
Oh no doubt the hairdressers will be fully booked when this is over! For a lot of women, their appearances are important to them. I personally don't think it's a shallow or superficial worry to be honest. Of course you need to be decent human being as well, but everything just feels so much better when you are happy with how you look. Nothing worse than facing something as big as this virus in the world right now AND feel miserable about your own appearance. And I honestly cannot wait for this to be over and to go get my own hair etc. done.

Victoria  said:
on Friday 03-Apr-20 10:02 AM
Yes there is definitely going to be a stampede of people wanting to get their hair done. It is affecting hairdressers financially now but once this lock down is over the hairdressers will have floods of people getting there hair done.

Sujata  said:
on Friday 03-Apr-20 09:41 AM
Small business owners are certainly the ones feeling the financial strain right now. A fresh haircut has its benefits and to some extent efforts have been made to support small business who are at risk of permanent closure due to financial constraints brought by the lockdown. Hopefully, all will return to some form of normality in due course.

Melandre'  said:

I wouldn't call it trivial at all, I myself know the morale boost it brings about to get a good cut and color. However, the loss of income small shop owners, hairdressers/barbers, nail salons, tuck shops, etc, are facing is of a large concern. It would make a difference if after this lock down we supported those ''small shop owners'' instead of going to the well branched out franchises that could afford closing down for plus-minus a month. Instead of getting your nails done at Tammy Taylor or Sorbet why not support a woman working from home or who has started her own salon. Small sacrifices can make a big difference, and you would actually be pleasantly surprised just how good some of these ladies that work from home, can do nails and hair.

fikile  said:

It is really sad to see small shops close because of these lock down because now it means no money for rent. It is bad because i need to attend the salon right now and i can't because they are closed, my hair looks very bad.

patrick  said:

The best way to go would be to clean shave until we are allowed out. Surely anybody can do it.

Nicolle  said:
on Friday 03-Apr-20 08:53 AM
I do not think it is trivial. I think to a large extent, as humans, we have our needs and pleasures. Not all "needs" are the same. Not all "pleasures" are the same. I know that for some a fresh haircut helps them to feel good. For others it may be shoes, or a indulgent dessert. At the end of the day we all seek to feel like the best version of ourselves.

Natasha  said:

I don't go to the hairdresser every month I go maybe once in 4 months and i went on the 7th of March so im all good. but i think there is going to be a few ladies that is going to go insane. with their hair growing out and getting to long. I don't actually need a hairdresser my mom cuts my hair and sometimes she color it if i don't want to go to a hairdresser. But think the Hairdressers are going to be fully booked after this lockdown.

Michelle Smillie  said:

I was actually just thinking about it yesterday when I saw some memes go around on Facebook of how hairdressers can keep themselves busy. A funny photo was one where the woman is practising her cutting on her lawn. Another coloured her hair 4 different colours to give herself something to do for the day. But, as you pointed out, this is unfortunately a very bad time for them in terms of earnings, and I've heard that they already experienced less clientele before the lockdown with people being scared of getting sick there. This is certainly the time to be grateful for working a desk job in a legal firm.

Clare  said:
on Friday 03-Apr-20 08:28 AM
I don't go to the hairdresser often but being on lock down I feel a shorter hair cut will do me good. I must say that my mom on the other hand is starting to lock like puddle (Hope she isn't readying this blog), I had such a laugh yesterday because I asked her if the 80s called her and asked for their hairstyle back and she just cussed at me followed with flipping me off. hahaha

Nikita  said:
on Friday 03-Apr-20 08:12 AM
I am unfortunately not a regular client at a hairdresser. They are lucky if they see me once every 3 months for a trim. I think if I had to colour my hair I would understand the crisis. I do however feel for all the self employed small business owners like hairdressers who are going to struggle during this time.

Karien  said:
on Friday 03-Apr-20 08:12 AM
I have noticed on social media that many hairdressers, and other grooming services in South Africa, attempt to sell vouchers at lower prices to customers to get a haircut , or other grooming done, after the lockdown is lifted. I think this is a great idea, but I wonder how many customers will make use of this.
The effect of Covid-19 on small businesses must not be under estimated. Small businesses are essential to a health economy.

Melissa  said:
on Friday 03-Apr-20 08:03 AM
I agree with Lucretia, hairdresses are depending on their client's and now with the lockdown they won't have any income. This is a huge knock for their business

Roxanne  said:
on Friday 03-Apr-20 07:51 AM
A lot of hairdressers are taking a hard knock but hopefully when all calms down their business will boom.

Nicolene  said:
on Friday 03-Apr-20 07:49 AM
I can't really say if there will be a stampede or not as I think a lot of people won't get paid during the lock-down so there won't be money to do hair before they get back to work.

Lucretia  said:
on Friday 03-Apr-20 07:24 AM
You are right, there are many small hairdressing businesses out there that are taking a pounding who rely on their regular clientele to keep them going. These are very tough, scary times for many people and the devastation that covid-19 is going to leave will be far more than just the disease itself.
