Australia v South Africa – the cricket

If you told me 20 years ago, I could have told you what dates each cricket match would be played on, what the venue was and have thoughts and predictions about them. I have lost so much interest in cricket now, and it was a sport that I was best at when I was at school, that I would not even be able to tell you the name of the Australian captain.

I know that we tied the one series and lost the other and that some had criticised the fact that there are only two tests. Cricket has really been plagued by one scandal after another, with bowlers running into bowl deliberate, no balls, so that gamblers somewhere can win a bet, and obviously those bowlers have so little faith in the umpire being able to spot a no-ball, that on those cases they generally seem to overstep by half a metre! There are times when you watch a game and think that somebody is playing so abysmally badly, especially when it comes to bowling that you wonder if something is not on the go, and the second you realise that so much of a sport is manipulated, it taints your viewing of it and you ultimately lose interest. The players will pay eventually for all this corruption with reduced salaries and contracts, because less people attending matches will ultimately translate into smaller profits and smaller contracts and if at that time they try to remedy it by taking even more money from bookmakers to rig games, they will only send the sport further into decline.

Cricket was once upon a time my favourite game to watch. Nowdays it is more pain to watch and the standard of the game is below par.

May be it's the cultural thing, but I struggle to think of a more severe punishment on myself than sitting through a game of cricket.
Those 3 or 5 days matches sounds like the worst nightmare to me.

i agree used to play when i was younger,it was played because one had a love of the game, these days like most other sports as well,it's played because of the amount of money the players and the damn bookies can get out of it.something needs to be done to get rid of the corruption in the sport before it is too late!!

I must admit i have no interest in cricket what so ever anymore, like most.

i do agree with Alexis and Robyn though that everything has become about money, and doing things the easy way. it makes us as the supporters loose all sort of interest.

cricket is definitely not the way it use to be. really sad, however, I would rather watch cricket because the players are talented. Then sit and watch a game of Bafana Bafana.

The only time I'm interested in cricket is when there is a ODI, or when South Africa is playing. It really is interesting sport if you know when they have hit a six or a three.

Sometimes it's bad to see when a player is playing there last game, then you see their sad faces at the end of the game.

In recent years cricket has been scandalized by several gambling and match fixing allegations.
It's quite obvious when a match reaches its climax and all of a sudden two or three players are playing badly - this totally spoils the match for me. I have ultimately lost interest.

I find the womens cricket refreshing they secured their spot in the 2013 ICC Women’s World Cup.

If all these players they can understand how does it feels to support the games of corrupt players, I think they can change their attitude gambling with supporters hearts.

That is why people are drinking over the weekends because sports is boring no longer entertainment.

It would seem that everything has to have scamming and making extra money. Very sad that a game/sport is now this.

I agree, where are the days where sport was just a game. It taught children to always strive to winning, but also that life goes on after you have lost. Now it is all about money, corruption. I agree with Nicolle too - we used to arrange a braai when there was a cricket game. Now it is just another sport.

Wasn’t it great when sport was just a game?

No interest in cricket at all. But I do remember a time a few years ago, where my weekends and week evenings were spent trying to dull out the sound of the games. Now it appears as if no-one has interest in the games at all. There’s no longer the chatter of excited fans about the cricket or friends and family gatherings to watch a game.

South African team need to change their approach when chasing a score (low score). They have a VERY BAD tendency of when chasing a low score their approach (run rate) is also low, ending up having to chase 6 an over!! Same thing happened with England
We need to find/start a way forward, wont help with the critics forever. They are ‘chokers’, they deserve that name. But we still have a very good side, just needing touch ups there and there.
Plus, we’ve always had someone who we call a pinch hitter at the depth, why approach this WC without such?

I think like any sport in S.A they starting to get boring, reason being there is more polotics in the sport than the actual sport being played. Also the players aren't there for the sport no more it's more about their ego's and spot light. People don't pay money to go watch someone for their looks, they go to watch the sport. They don't care about your scandal they care about the SPORT and every sport in S.A has become a scandal more than anything. It's quiet sad.

Hansie killed cricket for me... That being said, i think the best thing that has happened recently are the convictions (and jail time) in Britain. I might start watching again.

I agree with Robyn, it is all about the money these days and everybody wants to make a quick buck instead of working towards or trying their best to get what they want

There was a time, in the late 90's early 2000's that i did not miss a game. I knew the names of every player on our team and where in the batting line-up they were. Unfortunately that is no more, I was not even interested in pricing the tickets for the Australian tour, how sad is that - cannot tell you when last i have watched an ODI or local game. Is there anything left where corruption has not wormed its way into???

Where are the times when sportsmen and women were still proud of their team and their country and when they played will all they had? It's just so disappointing that it all comes down to how much money you can make.
